    You may want to install your antenna a little further away from the AM/FM of the vehicle, I would use a side mount bracket if it where me. To each their own. Great video.

    I run the same unit in my TJ Rubicon. Only downside is the handset clip won't stick to the dash. The weight of the handset pulls the sticky-back tape on the clip off of the dash bezel. I hang it on my hard mounted CB clip instead.

      If we're using the sticky back, we'll clean the plastic dash with alcohol and then heat up the sticky backing with a heat gun, adhere it and let it sit for an hour or two before putting any weight on it.

    I have an odd issue in my newly installed Midlands 275 (2019 Jeep JL) Everything works as it should however I've noticed if I turn on the weather radio I get a clear signal with vehicle off, ignition off - when I turn on ignition, or start engine it goes to a lot of static - seems like this is power related, however I'm unsure of the cause -- what might you have for a suggestion - I have tested transmitting / receiving to hand held GMRS and it's just fine! Thanks!

    Does it matter where the antenna is mounted ?? I have midland gmrs radio and the antenna is mounted on the back of my Jeep? Does it affect it having it mounted back there ? Thanks

    • @northridgenation
      @northridgenation  3 года назад +2

      Yes, it does matter where and how you mount an antenna.
      The best place to mount an antenna is on the roof, using a ground plane. Unfortunately, that doesn't work for the Jeeps because of soft tops, removable tops, non-metallic tops etc.
      So we are already at a disadvantage. The best we can do is to mount them solidly wherever we can fit them and to make sure we are using an antenna that is tuned to the radio/bands we are using.

    • @mikefissel8614
      @mikefissel8614 3 года назад +3

      I can tell you with certainty that you must mount high up on the roof with no obstructions. My club, Jeep Expeditions, 150 member club went to mandatory 15 watt minimum GMRS. We noticed right away that antennas mounted to bumper, cowl, spare tire, tailgate etc had half the range of those mounted to a roof rack or high up on a light bar mount. The 40 watt radios of course did better but still a low mounted antenna cut the range in half. Also keep watching Midland for the announcement of their new 50 watt radios coming out in Sept or Oct. The MXT500 is your typical face plate controlled unit. The MXT575 is like the 15 watt MXT275 where the controls are in the microphone. For a great article on GMRS see the current issue of OutdoorX4 Magazine. Once you go to GMRS with a properly installed radio and antenna (Midland 6db MXT26) antenna you will tear out that old CB and never miss it.

      @@mikefissel8614 I have a gmrs radio, just feel like where I mounted in the back won’t get much on the radio, I can hear people talking on mine but can’t respond to them , weather I’m out and about in the area. Thinking about getting the ghost antenna see if that helps. I have a soft top so I can’t mount it on top.

    • @samwalker3441
      @samwalker3441 2 года назад

      Yes, it matters. Middle of the top with a ground plane would be best. However, with the top being fiberglass or a soft top, Jeeps don't really have that option. Middle of the hood would be next best. Most of the time, we just compromise to what is easiest. The absolute worst place to mount an antenna is where the base of the antenna is below body tub level and sandwiched between the tail gate and spare tire. If you have chosen to mount your antenna at the back of the rig, you need to get it up high. At least above the height of the spare tire rim.

    • @samwalker3441
      @samwalker3441 2 года назад

      You may have that problem depending upon the thickness of the metal the bracket is being attached to. No, the rubber grommet is not specifically required. However, with it not there, you antenna install may be subject to moisture penetration.

    I’m pretty sure there is no such thing as privacy codes. FCC forbids encryption.

    • @northridgenation
      @northridgenation  3 года назад +2

      Here is a good synopsis of the so-named privacy codes:
      Privacy Codes
      In an effort to avoid a long discussion like we just had about CTCSS and DCS, the FRS and GMRS radio manufacturers came up with different words to describe tone or digital squelch. Motorola uses "Private Line" or "PL" codes. They also use "interference eliminator codes". Radio Shack (remember them?) used to call them "quiet codes". Many manufacturers call them "privacy codes". These consumer friendly terms refer to both CTCSS and DCS. Which makes everything confusing when trying to figure out how to make radios from different brands talk to each other. To make the description easier from here on out, we'll just call them privacy codes. Just remember, they have nothing to do with privacy.
      You don't have to use privacy codes. The easiest way to make your different brand radios talk to each other is to turn the privacy codes off. On many radios you turn the privacy code off by setting it to 0.
      Some radios don't have privacy codes, like the Midland LXT118. That means you hear everyone on your channel, whether they use a privacy code or not. But it also means that nobody using a privacy code can hear you. They have to turn their codes off in order to listen to your transmission.

      We hear it multiple ways, those who say don't coil it up and those that say to coil it up into a loop only and those who say to coil it up and twist it to a figure 8 and double it back.
      Midland says it is matched to the radio, so coiling it up is fine.
