Carnivorous Sundew Catches Wasp!

  • I was standing in my backyard when a wasp flew by. He headed directly into the worst possible fate - Straight into the clutches of a Southern Dewthread sundew. These plants are living flypaper. They stick to the insect with drops of glue and then digest their prey. You can see the sticky mess the wasp is in at the end of the video.
This wasp actually lived happily ever after. He struggled loose and finally flew away about an hour after this video was taken. Many other insects that you can see in the video were not as lucky.

Carnivorous plants are gorgeous...I'd love to have a sundew plant or a venus fly trap someday. Or a cobra lily. Or hell, why not them all? XD

That would be blackberry bushes. Plants with straight spines are built to repel, plants with hooked spines are designed to catch. Apparently farmers have a lot of trouble with sheep getting stuck in the bushes. In nature they'd become fertilizer. Or we would if we had a bit more fur. ;) And don't we like the berries it produces.

Interesting choice to use "Flight of the Bumble Bee" as the choice of music, as the wasp desperately wants to fly away, but cannot.

I didn't think a Sundew could catch something as large as a wasp!
Good thing, though, because wasps are bastards :D

I'm trying my luck at growing a couple of these from seed. I've never grown carnivorous plants before, and the and other sundews are said to be some of the easiest to grow. Wish me luck!
