I vote YES on a video of the install! Who’s with me?
Yep
Definitely!
I want to see the install video !!!
Yes please!!! 🙏
That'd be great to see if he can.
forklift mechanic here, the microswitch in the arm is, as you said, for the integrated brake inside the motor, but it needs to be CLOSED to work, its a safety feature so when the power is off the brakes are still applied. also, in the models i've worked on, this switch is usualy part of the circuit that enables/disables power to the drive motor so you cant accelerate with the brake applied.
this means you have to connect those two wires from the broken microswitch and THEN start poking around with the relays, if the motor isnt burnt this should be an easy fix, judging from the water inside that relay (it is upside down by the way, thats how the water got inside) the most likely issue is a rusted contact on the controls or the main relay
I knew somebody knew what is wrong here
I agree there must be a wheel lock that's used to steady the lift!! That switch you were by passing may lock the wheel!!
All the best from Canada
Most definitely 💯👍👍👍👍
If the handle is up it won’t roll that’s why it won’t move as the man said the micro switch under the handle
I Kept shaking my head the whole time when be was trying to get it to move without pulling down tbe handle first😂. I have used a Big Joe before. Not this model but another one. If the switches are replaced or bypassed I believe it will work. Sweet find for only $200 though.
his knowledge and desire to troubleshoot a problem is unsurpassed..and his laughter is infectious..Andrew and Mustie never ask for money..class acts..
How dare you compare Mustie to that Pig.
@@eric_seguinhe just said he doesn't ask for money. Calm down.
@@yamahabasher1 who the hells andrew and why is he a pig?
I think he bit off way more than he can chew on this one. This is a highly engineered machine without much safety factor built in. He is dramatically re-engineering it. The size of that platform is not arbitrary.
@tarstarkusz yeah. He did say it would be bolted to the floor. If not, it's gonna need stability supports.
We have a similar one at work, the drive handle needs to be pulled down in the right spot to activate the drive , its around the mid way down point , then the drive will work,. If the handle is up as yours is, it will not drive. Its a safety thing .
Exactly! Too bad we couldn’t tell mustie before he wasted a lot of time going through it.
That's what the switch he jumped was for.
After minute 40 he gets into it
I bet there's a relay that stops it from driving when the boom is up too.
@@edkorobanov6841 Maybe the relay that was halfway filled with water… 👍🏼
Would love to see a 2nd video on this lift. Concept is brilliant. Thank you, Mustie.
Assuming a passenger would naturally want to stand next to the hoisting side of this rig, the expanded metal shield that was removed next to the lifting chains might be replaced to avoid serious injury. A grab handle would also be nice.
@@charlesyoung7436 Darren's spoken use for this, does not include any passengers.
A TWO Hour Mustie1 feature length show. Turn off your cell phone. Grab some popcorn get a drink and settle into your favorite comfy chair.
Yeah I was going to film for next week but taking the afternoon off to enjoy this special
Dude cell phone is how I watch laying in bed. I fall asleep to it.
Two things: plug it up, show it charging the batteries. Circuits are interesting. Mount the whoopie light under the bottom of lift. Better than the buzzer, and still notifies danger.
@@tabelq.
Excellent idea.
It'll let anyone around know to clear the area by getting their attention.
As a forklift mechanic that works on these every day I was yelling at the screen far too much, most likely there is an issue with the potentiometer behind the panel on the backside of the handles, i've replaced hundreds of them for just wires breaking off them alone and hundreds more for the potentiometer being bad.
I’ve only ever used one, but on it the platform had to be all the way down before it could drive.
@@kyhillbillyhomestead8888 Yeah I was thinking the same. It would not be safe to drive with the lift up
So no store in high self? Sounds strange to me.
I agree with you also I want to point out that he might be a good mechanic but I think he never prepare to do the videos good if I was him I will try to find the repair manual of the unit and find the problem but in the end I think I think he was going to take it apart any way all that time we spend listerning to him it was for nothing (he like to hear himself talk) I ove to earn about another stuff I do not know but all the talking it get to my nerve and this is not the first project I see him do and I like it but all that talking it make me crazy especially when at the end he do not do what we think he doing but something else what you think
As Mustie1 had no intention of using the drive wheel, I think he just did this for his own curiosity and to give the viewers a bit of an idea how it worked.
Thanks for the information about the potentiometer. As we know from the relay being full of water, the lift was left out in the rain, I would say the pot. was corroded inside, at a guess.
Don't let this lift beat you. What makes this channel so good is that you always find a way to fix whatever is in front of you. Get that lift to move on its own. I know you can figure it out.
"Don't Stand Under" The problem is you have to stand under it to read the warning. Brilliant.
I think the rationale behind the stickers is someone's already up in the air and a second person can see those stickers and be hopefully disincentivized from walking directly underneath them
Did they have to put the lift up to put the sticker on???
Early Sunday pm here in the uk sorted… thanks Mustie..
The two huge batteries that go in that joe are two hundred pounds each. Those act as counter balance. I was a Safeway truck driver for thirty six years. I used a big joe and a power pallet jack almost every day in my job. Be careful of old joe he can make you in half a second. It’s a great tool.
You can download the complete manual for this if you need to.

This is a prime example of what happens when you have unqualified operators attempting to fix something flatly beyond them. This machine likely could have been maintained and repaired at a proper maintenance shop and saved this company thousands. However in their infinite wisdom of "It's cheaper to fix it ourselves", it cost them an entire perfectly serviceable machine.

This seems like Mustie needs a warehouse for all his junk. When you get more space, you get more junk. Love seeing the projects.
How dare you call his equipment. junk?
Unused stuff is often junk until it has been fixed and used 😁
Junk is also needed to fix other junk.
This is the warehouse, he used to shoot videos in his garage at his home.
That's what used shipping containers are for. Or dead VW busses.
@@jsaurman that’s what I’m saying. This is a shop. This elevator isn’t for this building it’s going to another building.

He still has tons of stuff at home😊
What a brilliant journey Darren took us all on. I’d love to see part 2 - the install, to see this beast put through it’s paces.
All his car stuff is great, but the oddball fault finding really shows the wrath of Musties knowledge.
Curtis instruments has the generic wiring diagram for that drive motor controller. Yellow steady flashing light is called a heartbeat. It will also emit a flash code like a 2-3.
WOW, Mustie is my #1 channel for everything for many years! Entertainment, knowledge, levity, fun, creating and modifying something! Thanks for all you have done for your subs and take care!

Awesome build! Please do a followup with the install…the best part is watching you work through the potential issues.

I worked at a company with a contractor, and they made their own freight elevator from a huge forklift mast, and the finished product worked as well as a freight elevator, but saved the company about 10 grand. This included all the safety controls, doors, etc.
I’m glad Mustie said they were bolting it down at its location. That’s the first thing that came to mind when he said they were extending the platform. Came out pretty sweet ! Nice job Mustie !
Thank god for that.
I'm half way through, and was getting very nervous about the whole "Let's make the lifty loady thing bigger than the stops it falling over bits were made for"
Maybe extend the two front legs so they extend out as far as the new platform 😉
If necessary, I would consider adding some extensions to the legs, perhaps something bolted and/or foldable onto itself just for added support/saftey. Great job on this weeks show!
2 hours? Awesome! going to have to get some popcorn for this one.
And the Dog and the Cat and some more snacks!
Pull the handle for the controls/steering half way, then the motion may work. There is a safety switch to prevent it from accidentally moving in the resting status.
Propped up in my bed on an early Sunday morning. A pot of coffee is nearby. I'm watching Mustie 1 and life is good.
We used Big Joe's at Best Buy to bring down tv's, washers and dryers or anything way up on the top shelving in the store. It is a beast.
Enjoying your work from the Philippines Borneo and raised in California.
That Curtis black box thing that had the yellow flashing light, I found the manual online for it and the steady flash indicates normal operation. If there were an error it would flash rapidly such that you count the flashes and look up the corresponding code in the manual. So that module is working fine.
Also, I would definitely replace the rusty relay. Long term that could be a life safety concern.
Good morning Mustie family. Got my coffee time to hang out in the shop.
I'm deeply jealous. We keep our scaffolding up in our loft and man is it a pain in the ass to pull down when we need it. This ended up so pretty I wish you'd just raised the new platform 1/4 inch so you could just have one slab of the aluminum on top.
OK be honest. How many forgot for a second the the platform went up when he was pulling it onto the trailer? 🤣 Really cool project!!
one here
I was surprised he still had it powered.
He does pick up some weird and wonderful contraptions, wonder if he has a dog named Gromit lol
Some people that know him are either saving these things for him. They then call him. He inquires and ask. He scoots over there and the haggling begins. The lady who is the owner of the place has no clue of the value of the beast. She gives it away. 😅
I used to sell used furniture and there was a guy who did metal fabrication who would regularly buy all of the metal bed frames that I had just for the angle iron.
Another great Mustie Creation I was thinking maybe you could extend the outriggers under the platform maybe give it some more steadiness but really enjoyed the video hope to see the install thanks for bringing us along
Hey Darren,
Thats shop lift is a awesome idea man.
*** dropped screw update ***
Its under the tire on the power master, 25 years ad a hvac & appliance tech has honed my droped screw finding capabilities I rekon 😂 just happened to see it.
I have to disagree with you appliances not having a wiring diagram in them. ALL appliances have a wiring diagram/tech sheet in them if you know where to look. They hide them so your everyday home owner can't find them, but they are still there.
Microwave - usually behind the panel at the top of the door.
Refrigerator - normally behind the kick plate at the bottom.
Stove - normally in electrical compartment with all the switches/control
Washer - usually in the main inside compartment once top is removed,
Dryer - usually in the control compartment
Dishwasher - is almost always buried in the insulation on the back of the kick plate.
I’m glad to see that you still have the Cushman meter maid. I watched that build so many times.
On the pallet jacks I used at work the steering handle was spring loaded to pop back up vertical. If you just let the handle pop up all the way the machine stopped. When in use you pulled the handle down, but not all the way down. If you pulled it all the way down it stopped the machine. All the way down told the machine you had tripped and fell down. It stopped so it wouldn't get run over.
Lift the handle part way up then try moving it.

In the Army we used to cut up tires and use the tread to space uneven areas,It worked well and lasted forever on our dual wheel jack for trucks,Parts can be hard to get in overseas assignments,Mentioned it because of the 2x2 and the platform uneven surface at the back of the landing plate,The tread absorbs the slight difference without all the reshaping or cutting and welding, Big tires are free along side the road most times. You can screw it down to the landing legs,Replace as necessary.Just a thought.

Great mods, Mustie! However, you 'may' have to fabricate some sort of height lock (floor level lock) to prevent bleed-down of the ram (hydraulics) to keep the hole in the second level floor filled and avoid having a huge gaping manhole (😆). That's a very interesting video! I like the way you work. Thanks for the very interesting content! All the very best to you!
Or he makes a hinged floor in the upper storage floor and has a vertical rod on the lift platform, with a wheel on it, to lift the floor up. If the platform bleeds down, the floor will drop back in place. Added safety.
I got so excited when I saw the duration of the video-the content could be mustie simply organising his stash and I’d still be sat there with a pasty!
Hey Mustie1! I’m thinking, on the side pieces of diamond plate. Perhaps you should have put a 90 degree bend where they met the existing steel plate, that was also panned 90 degrees. This would have eliminated the extra two pieces of stock (and added weight), and added strength to the aluminum diamond plate side pieces.
Power directly to motor
I knew you wouldn’t settle for those cutouts. But it was driving me crazy!😄
At 1:06-ish,you corrected yourself saying "scrabble" for searching materials. It was appropriate: you often scratch, scrabble, scrounge and scrooge - in fact you're master of the art!
Just be careful after your modifications are done because the center of gravity has now drastically changed, especially the higher you go. Also, don't forget your placement of the load this will also contribute to the stability of the lift taking place.
he mentioned it's going to get lagged/bolted to the floor and used as a stationary lift.

Fantastic video Mustie!!! They are all good. Big fan . One of the best channel's...period!
Hello sir, Do you remember when you tried the broken switch inside the steering section. That clicking relay may have been the brake being pulled in. Which would allow you to roll the frame around easier. I think it would wheel may lock when no power is applied and be electronically pulled free when power and safeties are all in ready states. just a thought. Otherwise another awesome video!

Man I really enjoy your videos. The longer they are, the better I like them. You are very talented in many ways. Keep up the good work.👍👍
Lifting inspector here, i have never seen one of these in my life or even knew they existed. Not even written about in my books.
Darren, you're an awesome dude! You teach me a lot I do a lot of tinkering kind of like how you do I like finding stuff in the trash also and I don't do my homework when I mess with things either. I think we're a lot alike honestly that's pretty awesome anyways thank you for giving me the video and I knew you couldn't give up until you win lol
The back two extensions could have been on top of the plate, especially since those two uprights are left on. You aren't really losing and usable area. It would create a safety edge and allow the platform to go all the way down. It would only gain you an inch or two.
Thanks Mr Mustie👍
This episode is definitely high up on my list of favorite Mustie1 episodes.
Something way different than his usual projects.
No carb to tear apart and rebuild 😂
Lots of metal fab like I used to do in the early 70's as an Ironworker welder repairing large 16 to 20 foot long parts racks and square interstackable tubs for GM that insane forklift drivers mangled the crap outta.
That was before I enlisted into the Coast Guard and became an Aviation Machinist Mate Flight Mechanic.
Two hundred bucks and a box of screws? Now that is a bargain... 🇬🇧👍
on most units like that they have a safety aspect were if the forward and back handle is up it isolates movement , so the handle bar must be lower to enable
huh? on all the ones i've used the handle must be up to use them,
the handle down operates the 'dead man' switch
Yep I was about to type out the same thing... most have to be waistline to operate in a safe manner. So if the handle is too low or too high, it will not fire the motor for forward or backward operation, but the belly safety button will always jump the motor in the forward position.
Here in Austria the handle, when let loose, has to return springloaded to it's upmost position, where it activates the brake and disables movement. The same is to say for the lowest position, so if you stumble while pulling the lifter, it stops immediately. Safety regulations.
You might need to lengthen your footprint when you lengthen the work surface. This will protect you from a tip over. I would just get a piece that fits inside the existing box tube, cut the ends of the feet off the lift, and add the new material, welding at least 3 sides of it.
By not using the intended batteries, you are making it easier to tip, as the batteries are part of the counterbalance, so you'll need to take this into consideration in your design. I do realize that you want to anchor it down, but to lengthen the box tube would be to your advantage.
Yes, if it was still mobile however, it is being bolted down.
Being bolted to the floor makes the footprint huge and your comment is null.
My comment is not null. It's still a necessary part of doing a job right. Why risk breaking concrete when a little steel on the feet would help with balance and control?
@Farm_fab because he wants it permanent and it's his build not yours so yes null comment.
Great stuff. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, experience, problem-solving abilities, frugality, and persistence with those of us who will never do what you do, but who appreciate and love that you do it.
Loved the video - I second the votes for “yes” to the install!
Darren, the device at the front of the handle is an inertia brake. If the machine is in operation, and it gets close to a wall when the handle is left go, when the brake makes sudden contact with the wall, the brakes are activated. It's the same function if a body gets in the way.
I've always called them belly switches, same thing used on epj's
Otherwise affectionately known as a belly button.
They sure do what they are supposed to (btdt) 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think what happened is the switch in the handle got busted rendering the brake on the motor always locked on, that then burned out the motor speed controller (the CURTIS box) when they tried to go use it.
It would still have drove although very slowly and sounding like the batteries were weak, and that is likely also what they thought and just kept using it like that until the speed controller mosfets had enough and handed in their permanent resignation.
It also looks like it fell over or they ran it into something, there is a lot of damage on that yoke. I used to work in a Walmart distribution center, and they had tons of equipment that worked just like this, and I remember having to have the yoke in a pretty precise position for it to move forward.
Mustie1, u sir are a genius. U made an Electric Lift into a Cattywampus of a Lift. Bless yr Heart..
I would have thought there'd be an interlock that made sure the platform was fully down before it would allow any movement - to protect the bright sparks that operate that sort of equipment from having full height jousting competitions around the warehouse. Great video, as always.
If it’s Sunday at 7 am on the east coast it must be Musti 1 time.
9pm on a Sunday in Australia, perfect way to finish off the weekend
Yeah😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Hope you get back to the travel motor sometime. That would be a really nice feature.
And the vw double cab, econoline.
Title threw me off for a sec. Busted Man. Lol.
On the install, consider adding to u channel uprights at the back of the platform, fixed to the base. Have guide rollers affixed to the platform, running in the channel . That would reduce side to side movement of the platform without compromising the load space .Also extend the base legs under the platform , to the outer edge of the platform footprint. That would reduce any tendency to topple forward. Ingenious solution for a goods platform. Truly thinking out of the box.
therapy time, thanks Mustie1
It’s a pity you haven’t got a fork lift to lift the cradle to get the chain on 😂
Yeah. That's a bummer. Owning a forklift would be really handy for Mustie sometimes. He should probably try to buy one that doesn't run right and fix it up.
All the cool kids have Fireball welding tables 😉 Nice job 👍
I thought for sure you would figure out how to get it moving. Would love to see a second video on that. I'm sure others would also. You said getting it moving was not a priority for you, but I think it would make another great video.
see if you can get the motor going 😂
Love the thought invigorating process, had a few myself. Instead of lag bolting, how about using some of the heavier parts added to the back end to increase the counter balance? Also what did the second red button in the rear of the handle do? Was it to reset the drive if the safety bumper had been engaged? Thanks for keeping it fresh by mixing things up project wise, can't wait for the next one 😊
One button on the handle is a horn button. Used as you approach a doorway or corner to warn others you are nearby.
your ingenuity knows no bounds!
Does the Lift table have to be All the way Down to energize the forward/reverse ?
Nice find! It looks like it will do the job and then some. 👍👍
I'll be damned if you ain't the luckiest of Sonofa's with finding great stuff cheap. I swear. Thanks for bringing it to us!
Mustie hooked up two battery packs.
One had the positive on the red shielded end.
One had the positive on the shielded end for the other battery.
I question why the shielded ends for any battery wouldn't be the positive side.
One had boots on both positive and negative, the other set of leads was missing the positive boot, that machine was supposed to have shields on every terminal
