    You have some of the best videos I've ever seen. I love how you explain both the pros and the cons so well on so many of your reviews. Instead of down talking or up playing products, you just explain what they do and don't do and what their price point is.
    One of the best channels for this stuff on RUclips.

    Hey Mike! I want to thank you for taking time out of your days to put up these videos. For the past 3 months, I've been watching yours & other VA's videos & participating in webinars, because I wanted to start off putting my professional foot forward. After watching this video, I found this interface in a nice bundle on Amazon. It came with a pretty decent condenser mic, and everything a beginner needs to start recording. After watching your soundproofing vids and listening to all your advice, I just landed my very first VO job (which was also my first self-produced audition) and got raves about my audition. I'm a vocalist and actor, so doing audio editing is a whole new world for me. I'm so grateful for you and other experienced VA's who are out there, giving great advice on how to be successful in this business. 🙂

    I have a Steinberg UR22 MKII and had the same problem with a low signal in my headphones, I was able to resolve it by getting a headphone amplifier, it really is a good tool for people who really like to hear themselves in their headphones while they voice.

    • @zezesilver
      @zezesilver 6 лет назад +2

      good to see that others had the same problem as me with the ur22. I bought it as an upgrade to my umc22 and got kinda frustrated to see the low volume of the headphones. but as mike mentioned in this video, it has to do with the impedance. I tried other pair of phones and they were loud. can't complain though, the interface is a beast.

    • @D.Bunker
      @D.Bunker 6 лет назад +1

      I prefer my headphone volume low. I have found that if it is too loud, I tend to speak quieter into the mic, as it sounds to me like I am screaming. Perspective is everything.

      I have lots of audio problems with the ur22... when playing sound, there is a huuuuge distortion sound sometimes. It may last until I restart my pc or it may last for some minutes or seconds...

    • @kin2naruto

      Me too! My volume settings are usually around 10% for comfortable listening. There have been times (on public computers) where I had to turn down the Master Volume to a single notch above "mute" just so I wouldn't blow my eardrums out.

    • @bowdenprod1055
      @bowdenprod1055 6 лет назад

      It's hard to say, a lot depends on your setup, the mic could be picking up your computer or other ambient noise in your room when set at that kind of gain, and Mike has a really good setup there, he has a setup that just sounds dead quiet. When it comes to the Steinberg though, I have noticed that once I get to that 80-100% gain area, the preamps can start to get loud, but usually I record so I get levels around -9db to -12db so it never ends up being an issue, since I can get those levels with my interface usually running around 50-55%. I should note that's me using either an Audio Technica AT 2035 or an SM7B with a cloudlifter equipped. I'm not overly experienced with the NT1a.

    FINALLY!!!! Thanks to your information i figured out my latency issues. I'm trying to make my own home studio, and i was experiencing Latency in my recording. (very frustrating).
    After about, 2 days of solid downloading drivers and optimizing my Hardware, My issue, was this;
    I was trying to use Direct monitoring, but i still was getting delay. This was because My Computer was listening to my recording device, (Condenser mic, connected to my Scarlett Solo) I disabled listening to this Device, I turned up my gain, (because i actually wasn't able to hear myself through the Scarlett Solo) I turned on Direct monitoring, and now i have clean audio with 0ms delay. Thank you.

    Went from a Line6 Ux2, ended up becoming a paperweight within 6 months. This interface however, far superior in every way and far less hassle. It is rather sensitive to voltage fluctuations in your USB ports, so careful there. Gain is a little low for dynamic microphones, but overall top quality for what I paid.

    I have the Scarlett 2i2(1st gen) and i love it. One advice i have about hearing your voice through the headphone without using the direct input and still have just about the same latency as with the direct monitor turned on, is. if you have the drivers installed, it will have an app called control pane, and pretty mush it lets you adjust the buffer size, and i have mine set to 256 or sometimes 128 and then i use my DAW(Fl Studio) to output the mic to my headphones which allows you to use any headphones with any ohms and not have to turn the headphone volume all the way up, it could be at half or less.

    • @ErnestoAvilez92
      @ErnestoAvilez92 6 лет назад

      the delay is actually like 3ms if i put the buffer on 128 and very close to the sync on direct monitoring. Since i have a pretty powerfull gaming pc. It can handle lower latencty(buffer size) without any issues. I know that if you dont have a fast enough pc, it cant handle lower latency like on my older desktop.

    Big fan of this device. Though i find I have to boost it in post. This is mainly being due to my gain control, I found I was clipping a lot so found it easier just to boost in post. Though a positive here is that there is literally no noise floor on this device. It's silent. So once boosted it still sounds good!
    I had to resort to this following my internal sound card not playing ball with AMD mobo's which was a bit of a pain considering I loved the warmth the internal sound card gave off.
    Great video as always!

    I've had a Mackie Mixer, a ProFX4V2, for the past three years or so. Recently I got quite frustrated with the poor recording quality of the Audio out which I had been sending via a Behringer UCA202 USB device to my laptop. It only costs $28 and now it is in the trash; I'll never touch it again. I had to decide: to get the new Mackie USB mixer, the ProFX6V3, or a Scarlett 2i2? I chose the new Mackie. Fabulous mixer. All I do mostly is play with karaoke. With the mixer I can sing and listen on my Eon One. Whereas with the Scarlett, it is good for recording but not convenient to enjoy just simply turning on the mixer and singing away. (handy reversb and EQs on the mixer) The new Onyx mic pre-amps really make a difference.
    With the ProFX6V3, it sends out the digital signal on USB 1-2 and listens back on 3-4. So there is the ability to listen to a no-delay audio of what is being recorded on the laptop. I push in a button that says USB 3-4 for that; on the Scarlett I'd have to switch on the "Direct Monitor" button. With the Scarlett, on the laptop it does not say which USB channel is being used. It just says Audio channel 1 or 2 (I don't have a Scarlett ; I asked someone who does, to check).
    Only thing negative with the Mackie, is that the USB audio signal going to the laptop is limited to one stereo track. Whereas the Scarlett gives 2 stereo tracks. No big deal. For karaoke or voiceover, I just load up an MP3 or record into track 1, then record into track 2 while the laptop plays back track 1 at the same time. If I buy a Scarlett, it will be a 4i4 for sure and not a 2i2. The extra $70 is worth it, in my opinion, to get one more stereo input. Though, there is no gain control on the Scarlett for the third input; you just use the track gain on the DAW.

    Excellent video sir. Well thought out & easy on the ears. I'm assuming you've been getting nice voice-over gigs. At least I hope so. Fantastic "timbre" & resonance in your speaking voice. I often have many clients, when I'm explaining exactly what/how you've explained in this video, let's say an "over-the-phone" scenario... I explain to them how to set up monitors on the interface. More often than not I get the "monitor?" question. I have to be specific & say, your home-studio "speaker" monitors, not video. 😉 Wondered if you've ever had those as well. I'm assuming with the video, it's fairly straight forward as to which "monitors" you're referring to. Hey, I LOVE your taste in microphones as well. I'm use various RODE mics too for certain projects & discovered the RODE NT-1000 to be the most versatile mic I've ever used for under $500.00... 😉 Nonetheless, I ramble far too much. Thank you for sharing this video with us. Extremely informative & easy on the ears! 😉 💜 🍀 👻 🎶

    That was one great video! I have the first gen Scarlett 2i2, and love how easy it is to operate. I did, however, have to learn the difference between headphone volume and the input levels...ha ha ha...amateur mistake. Thanks for the explanation about “Line” vs “Inst.” I did not know that 48V Phantom Power was not delivered through the 1/4-inch (guitar) inputs. I will definitely Subscribe after I write this, so I can’t look to see if you’ve already covered the “CloudLifter” series of inline mic activators. I use an AEA R84 passive ribbon mic with the CloudLifter CL-1 with GREAT results. Before, I had to turn up the gain for this wonderful mic so much that hiss was introduced into my final sound. Because the CloudLifter provides an additional 20 to 25dB of ultra-clean JFET gain, I can now turn the input levels on my PreSonus Studio Channel and my Scarlett 2i2 way down-zero perceptible hiss now. I am about to order the AEA N22 active ribbon mic to record guitar (both electric and acoustic). While I don’t do voiceovers, your explanations are very helpful to me...thanks again!

    I use my 2i2 Gen 2 as my portable laptop audio interface and a 2i4 Gen 2 on my desktop. I am generally happy although I think that the headphone amp could be stronger and have just added a headphone amplifier through outputs 1-2 which has just given things a little boost in that direction. They are solid products and well constructed, a little pricey when compared to competitors, but very well realised and supported.

    Just to note. Comparing to the Steinberg UR22 mk2 this thing have less gain, so on mics like sm7b or xm8500 (not a comparison, just an example!) you will use max (or almost maximum) gain. So beware of some noise with low sense mics. It really does matter, buying budget interfaces you probably don't want to buy a CloudLifter as you are on a budget, right? Another thing to note. At least with Scarlett 2i2 mk2 using it in regular mode (i mean not in ASIO, regular - as you would in Skype) in stereo in (if you have a pair of mics for example) you will have a big amount of distortion whatever the gain level you set (but there are no problems in ASIO mode). It still not fixed. Comparing to Steinberg ur22 mk2 - bigger gain amount, cleaner inputs, no distortion in regular mode, but... sound dropout. Even with the latest driver, which claims it fixed it, this problem still exist. Rare. Both problems tested with multiple interfaces and multiple computers. Both vendors lies telling they fixed it. And you wont find this problem testing this devices at the store, will take some time.
    Sorry for my (probably) terrible english. Just wanted to note. While the analog part of this budget devices can be pretty good (not perfect, but no one expect it to be) - the digital side is buggy. Full of hidden bugs. Overall - they are great at this price. You should not buy scarlett mk1 this time (the software is unsupported for many years now) but mk2 is ok. From my point of view the preamp of ur22 is better (cleaner and more gain), but Focusrite gives you a good plugins for free every couple of months. And i found it very stable in ASIO mode (which you WILL use in your DAW, right?). Hope this will help someone.

    very valuable information! good video! the issue about the monitor and phone volume knobs, I it disapears if there's a mixer in front of the interface, and you have all the versatility a mixer provides, like putting a hole band before it. That's something I want to do some day when I get money to buy a mixer. :D

    I have the (old?) solo and use it with FCPX (mic) and garageband(guitar) I noticed that the latency became worse when I plugged it into a USB hub and plugging it into the computer directly lowered it but using the direct monitor still seems to be the right way to go.

    Hi Mike! I have been trying to get sound into my headphones and so I have been watching many YT videos. I found this one from 2018 and my 2i2 is a bit updated, but you gave the most comprehensive explanation on how to use the 2i2. FINALLY!!!! I am going to implement the instruction you have given and see if I can finally hear myself in my headphones. Once I do, i will come back and let you know. Question, just so I am clear, do I only need to set up my 2i2, headphones and microphone to hear myself or do I need to connect to something else. Do I need the 1/4" jacks and if so, what are they connected to. This is all new to me. Thank you for any help you can provide. Excited to start my VO career!!! 🙂

    Just a note that impedance in your headphones has nothing to do with sensitivity. There are tons of low impedance headphones that are extremely hard to drive due to their sensitivity ratings. The impedance rating is only useful for determining if the 1/8th rule is applied, and whether or not you will get a more coloured frequency response/distorted sound than the manufacturer intended for headphones.

      AKG K712 with 62 Ohm is a good example. Needs same power as Beyerdynamic DT880 with 250 Ohm

    My M-Audio FasTrak also has a very weak headphone amp...bit annoying. I use it to listen to the direct output of the Symetrix 528e that feeds it and it's not a very faithful signal level.
