- In honor of James Garner's birthday, here is the classic theme song to The Rockford Files. I recently read Joel Selvin's excellent new biography on the life of Jim Gordon, called Drums and Demons, and discovered that Gordon played drums on the original theme song recording. I always loved that theme song and the great drumming on it, and had thought about doing a cover video...even before I knew it was Jim Gordon. The theme was written by Mike Post, who did many TV show themes including Hill Street Blues, Magnum PI, Law And Order, NYPD Blue and the A-Team.
Yes, I overdubbed tambourine. 😄
About the kit:
26x14, 14x10 (12 lugs),16x16, 18x16 RCI Starlite Super Duty acrylic shells, with Ludwig classic lugs, mounts, claws and t-rods, repro pointy badges, vintage Ludwig rail mount. Snare is a mid 70's 6.5x14 Ludwig 402 Supraphonic.
RCI has been making high quality acrylic shells for nearly 20 years. RCI Super Duty shells are made in America. They feature a welded (not glued) seam, 45 degree glass cut edges, and are scratch and impact resistant. They are very resonant and feature exceptional projection and tone.

70's TV themes ROCKED! There will never be anything like them ever again.
So glad to grow up in those times, I wouldn't change a thing.
Please do the Streets of San Francisco theme next, it's totally badass!
Composed by another top-notch composer-conductor-arranger; Patrick Williams. Quinn Martin was top-notch himself as a prolific producer.
Agreed. That is a great one! I may cover it
There's only one thing you can say "George"... you know George, this means now that you're going to have to do Barney Miller, Sanford and Son, etc...
Omg. Fantastic. James Garner and I are both from Oklahoma.
GREAT DRUMS = GREAT SHOW 😮😮😮😅😅😅😅😊😊😊😂😂😂
Terrific drum cover, George Fludas, of a television theme from the team of Mike Post and Pete Carpenter. The Rockford Files series debuted the year you were going on eight; 1974, went six seasons on NBC into 1980. 🙂 I especially like that horn section that comes in close to the end.
Yes, I agree. I love that. When the French horns carry that melody. Great arrangement
I remember that show.
I love this show, James Garner was incredible. All the supporting actors and actresses were awesome to. I loved Jim Rockford dad Noah Beery, he was awesome and Stuart Margolin, those two guys were in a lot of ‘80’s shows too. No one ever gives the supporting actors enough credit. Marietta Hartley, who played David Banner’s late wife on “The Incredible Hulk 1978”. I love your drumming on this song, it sounds even better with the Bonham kit - and Ludwig.
ROCKFORD FILES!! LOVE IT!!!! Awesome!!! How about the car--Pontiac Firebird!!! GREAT job George!
Oh yeah, love that ride!
Jim Gordon was a master drummer. Too bad his other legacy from his personal life. Great cover!
Love it !!!! Putting a pic of James Garner in there 👍🏼. Great job, great sound !
Great playing George, Terry seriously I am considering asking RCI to make me one of these kits instead of buying from Ludwig - she sounds perfect
I got to go inside the trailer( Jim’s house) they used on the series when I was at Universal Studios back in the 70’s.
I had no clue that Jim did this cut. Thanks.
That makes sense,Mike Post was buddies with Gordon ive read-and the drums are compelling original. The ludwigs sound great, nice work and thank you for taking me back for justa moment there,
So funny George; I vividly remember my dad's '77 gold Chevy Camaro that I used when testing for my driver's license.
Killer!
Excellent drumming George! Jim Gordon was a drumming master.
Yes, I grew up watching The Rockford Files, because my late mom n dad loved it!
And Barney Miller, Ironside, Streets of SF, The Rookies, Adam-12, CHiPs, Kojak, Police Woman, The Mod Squad...
edit: Hawaii-50, now that's a cool theme song
Oh hell yes! Love it George! What a great choice to throw at us. Thank u. Jimmy Gordon…what can we say about him? He was just a tremendous musician all around. A composer too! One song he contributed on that really struck me was Sundown, by GL. His understated and clever fills are so expertly executed that it sounds as if HE wrote the song itself. Coming from under the tutorship of the great Hal Blaine it’s no surprise Jim embarked on a lengthy career. It’s astounding how many songs he’s contributed on.
Yes, absolutely, his performances usually have some really cool and unique tasty bits.
Awesome George! One of my favorite tv show theme songs growing up
Just listened to the Drum History podcast (that you've been on) about Jim Gordon, and I had no idea of this story. I knew he played on Ricky Don' Lose Your Number. I didn't know he played on Lalya and the hundreds of others. I've ordered Selvin's book. Wow, what a story.
It's a really great book however very sad
Absolute classic video on RUclips for drummer's and those of our era, I always loved that theme tune from another classic American show on TV,
Everybody I knew around that time loved the show as well.
Then... you go and drop the legend Jim Gordon himself playing the drum part for the theme tune. Well, it all makes sense now. What near 40 years later! Then you play along as per the late great Jim Gordon did originally, Thanks George, absolutely top notch RUclips drum channel and drummer as well I'll add. 👊
Thanks so much!
How about the closing them from WKRP. I love that song been wanting to play it in a band for years just to see the crowd reaction
Possibly, yes!!
Nice!! I was hoping for a cutaway of you on the tambourine and cowbell at one point 😋
Wow, Far out, man. That's hip!
Great job! This is the first time that I have even heard this song complete.
Great job. If I remember correctly the guitarist was Danny Ferguson
Angel Martin approves!!
Angel is the best!
Fun! I love playing this tune on guitar. I play a different version which I think is the original theme straight from the show. It starts with a phone call on an answering machine. Your drums always sound awesome.
nice George.that made a great show even better!
That was awesome! You took me back to my happy place! Thank you!
Used to watch this when I was a kid. They show reruns on a local station here so I get to see it now and relive some memories. RIP James Garner.
Great show, great tune
Awesome 🔥🔥🔥👏🏾👏🏾
Takes me back to low gas prices and my 68dodge charger....... wish I still had that car . very cool sounds great
Loved it! Put a pair of Ray Bans on Terry and he could pass for Jim Rockford!😎
I just came down to the comments to say that Terry should've been special guest on tambourine!
@@neekondrums I wish I had thought of it!! We hung out a few days ago too. Darn
"This is Jim Rockford. At the tone leave your name and message, I'll get back to you."
Great job on the cover Geo!
Going old school 👍🏻
Yes !!
Great job. I still watch the Rockford Files. It's on twice a day. Always loved that theme song.👍🏻
Awesome George, i watch RF every night on antenna tv....and Kojak also pretty cool also ✌️..You nailed this!!
Great cover!! Those Vistalites-and the way you play them!-sound amazing!!
Those versatile Vistalites!
What a pleasant surprise. Love this one! Thanks Professor!!!
As usual, that was Great! Neat how you are doing some of the old shows theme song/s. Especially like the Baretta song.
I never realised the complexity of the drums on this song, as I was young at the time. I tried over the years to be a drummer, but it was too difficult! So I became a guitarist... Still at that!.. Still no good! Nicely Played...
Yes, its deceptively straightforward sounding but there are some really tricky little time changes and nice grooves
Do Hawaii 5-0
That Jim Gordon was the drummer on this great theme song is fascinating to me. I'd always assumed it was probably Hal Blaine on his gigantic 16 piece fibre glass Ludwig made kit. This song differs from the actual recording used for that wonderful old tv show however, being that I'm old enough to remember it. So, I'm still confused.
Dang, Mike Post is the Hans Zimmer of TV
Yeah, super prolific
I always loved this song - only know realizing it has so many wild meter changes. You could do a series on great TV themes - Barney Miller, Futurama, MIssion Impossible ...
yeah, its a slick tune. I did Baretta a while back, I had intended to do more but this is the only other so far. I'll do some more.
My favorite show from the seventies!!! Good job Gorege
Please do Fire by Mitch Mitchell! We’re overdue for it!
Very unusual choice! Love it!
So cool. Everything was real back then. Who knows nowadays. Love the kit especially the 14 inch tom. Less lugs. Looks and sounds great
So good! Thanks for this one my dude!
Awesome.
Nothing like playing to the song simple roll parts bring hi hat groves not like today’s drumming speed and blurred bass drum. Do you what I mean?
I agree, the groove was paramount
Greatness as always George! 👏🥁
That is insane. Masterfully done. Wow
Cool video
Great Job, George!!! That was my favorite show as a kid! (Was an odd choice for a kid in the 90s 😂) I need to revisit that show!
Really great show, witty
one of my favorite shows. I thought he was the coolest guy. You gotta do the theme song of "barney miller."...
Used to watch that show religiously you're drumming is awesome as always keep on kicking!
I’m trying to figure out if those cymbals are 602 or 2002. It’s hard to tell with the room sound
the ride is a vintage 24 602 , the other are all 2002 black labels from the 70's
@@BONHAMOLOGY hey thanks man
Studio sounds good 🧡
This brings back some very good memories for me as a kid watching the show with my grandfather.
Nice!
This makes me want to do J turns in my Trans Am
😂👍🏻
Nice job man. I watched this show as a kid. Back when tv was good. Not like the crap we have today. Also nice ending you played at the ending of the song
Brilliant never heard all this tune before great stuff a great show, the drums sound mint 👍
That Drum Kit is cool! Is that modeled after a Known Drummer's Kit or is it your own design? I like the tuning. It makes me want to get one like it. The acrylic reminds me of Keith Moon's Fish Kit
Do a cover of the chips theme
Love this! Thanks for the nod to Jim Gordon and Joel Selvin's excellent new book on the legendary rock'n'roll drummer. Cheers!
I always listened to the brilliant drumming on TV themes and you chose a classic here George, superb, thank you.
A great TV show theme. Nice drum cover. Cheers! 👍🏻👍🏻✌️🥁
I see the gold Firebird flyin’ by😜😉🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Love it.
Who wrote that? Do you know?
Its in my description. Mike Post
@@BONHAMOLOGY I never read the description 🤣
@@surfshack2 LOL
Fantastic! My favourite TV theme I would have to say. Those were the days. 😎
Yes, those were Good Times!
Love it George! Could be a whole other playlist for you of TV theme songs. Barney Miller theme is downright funky! ✌️❤️🥁
Do Magnum P.I. (The great Jeff Porcaro played drums on the theme song by Mike Post)
That's a good one!
What ya think of the Paiste 22” 2002 1971-1980 compared to the 24” ? Thanks for the videos!
I never really played a 22 , I don't own one.
@@BONHAMOLOGYthanks
awsome tune.my favorate theme song also, thanks for playing along for the cover
Actually this sounds like the sort of think that LZ would have jammed on for fun.
Right!
I hope Barney Miller is next!
That's a great one!
Does the type of cymbal stand effect the tone of a cymbals vibrations? What cymbal stands do you prefer? Thanks for the videos!
Mike Post. Too many tv theme songs to mention.
👍🏻‼️
Do you like 2002 or Giant Beat hihats better?😅
I like them equally but the 2002's are more versatile....vintage GBs are quite thin. I'm not a fan of the reissues GBs
@BONHAMOLOGY I have an 1983 set of 2002s and reissue set of GBs I usually gig w/ the 2002s and record my youtube video w/GBs ,lately..love your vids!!🔥🥁
Do the pink panther theme
You could charge $200 per day......+ expenses.
Do mission impossible and Shaft
Shaft! Yes
So weirdly random....
😂
Great performance of a great song, from a great show!!!!!! RIP Jim Gordon.
