I've been up there a few times and you guys did a wonderful job maintaining it. The real tragedy is that the Kookipi fire was under control and being fought by the fireman billeted in Boothroyd until they were redeploy elsewhere. So many properties and lives, rip.

@@blueman5924 the fire was under control around the 9th of Aug. Fireman were pulled out of the area at that time even though the fire was still burning. I know this because a family member was feeding the firefighters and obvious keeping up with what the people on the line were saying. Someone should be held accountable but unfortunately that is a rarity nowadays.
(edit, the fire was 1st spotted on July 8/2023. Just a fyi)✌️

This is absolutely beautiful, Shaun! Thank you.
As the lead volunteer organizer of building this tower in 2012, and as President of the Four Wheel Drive Association of BC which lead this build and the maintenance over the 11 years since the build, I have so many memories of this place, all of them incredibly positive.
Separate from my involvement and that of my family here; I have spent time with my wife here watching meteor showers and time with my son beginning a very memorable off-road adventure. I have spent time there myself contemplating serious situations in my personal life and have made important decisions there. A piece of advice that I picked up from local First Nations was that very important decisions should be made on top of a mountain. This is very true I have found.
What I didn't expect from watching this video was the emotion that Brenda and I experienced! Holy cow, the tears flowed.
Thank you so much for capturing all of this. I can't imagine it being expressed any better. This is a wonderful tribute!

If it's rebuilt I would consider using Kentucky logs. They look great and are made of concrete so they are fire proof. You stain them once and they are good for life. Also I would clear cut everything back 100 yards. You people did a fantastic job. Thank you

I've not spent time at the tower it's self. But I have spent 12+ years driving and camping nahatlatch... spending time there to decompress and escape stress. I've also given my little ones their 1st camp trips there... so much emotion also. I drove the road today (think the guy at the tent was supposed to stop me) it's truly sad the place doesn't look or feel the same

As an ex bcfs eng try changing the skirting over to hardy board or metal and change the perimeter deck to metal grip strut. No wood for at least the first meter above ground. Also the lightning protection system will be super important on the replacement now that the trees are gone. BCFS used to put radio repeaters in old lookouts and had issues with lightning unless this was done. Back in the day the view line would have been kept clear both for obeservation and radio signals. So the lookout grounds were really bare, and a bit more fire resistant , not that they would have survived that rank 5 burn. Look out drawings still exist on some retirees home collections.

Tears streaming down my face as I watch this. Such a beautiful tribute. There is just something so special and so sacred about this place...not just the fire tower but the entire Nahatlatch area. I felt a similar connection the first time I was invited up to the Nahatlatch by friends of ours who own a cabin up there and I knew that someday I had to have a cabin up there as well. That was about 20 years ago, and we bought the cabin next to our friends' cabin about 6 years ago. It was a dream come true and now we are watching with broken hearts as fire ravages this beautiful area. Thanks again for sharing your story. Knowing how passionate we all are about the Nahatlatch, I know we will come out of this stronger than ever. We will be there with you to help rebuild the fire tower whenever that happens.

This video made me cry hard.. Over here on the Island this year, we didn't come out of this fire season unscathed, like the rest of the province, we too have fires burning..
The first time I visited Nahatlatch, was before we left the mainland for Vancouver Island (the first time) it was a family adventure, we had the Baja Bug & the VW Rail buggy, the year was 1976.
I've never been back, procrastination has been my biggest limiting factor, until I moved to the Island permanently in 2020.. I am a member of the 4WDABC, and have been a member since 2018, when they rebuild I want to come along, although as for volunteering, I am pretty useless, with my knees being in the shape they are in, I cna't stand or walk very well anymore.

Before I was put on the disability list i was a chef working in the oil and gas field and in the forestry for a local catering company who had the foresight to build these help portable field kitchens that we old fly in anywhere and produce meals out of these 8' × 14'kitchens for up 120 men 3 hot meals and a field lunch for as long as we could support the kitchen I flew these camps and set them up throughout Alberta and by for 12 years and have seen some of the most beautiful parts of Canada and before that I worked offshore in Canada's arctic and helped build Canada's north warning system throughout the Arctic and our country is the most beautiful place ever. The only thing I'm sad about is that now that I'm disabled and a single parent is that I'll never get to show my son his country because just cannot afford it. Great Chanel.

Beautiful video Shaun. My girlfriend and I were on evac order from the McDougal Creek fire when this happened. We had actually travelled to Hope to get away from the fires in our area and were staying at Emory Creek with plans to go visit the Nahalatch Lookout and Grizzly Falls for our first time. We had tried visiting earlier in the year however plans fell through. Your recent video on the group trip to Grizzly Falls brought forth new inspiration for us, so we figured why not wait out the suspense of our own local fire situation and travel to Hope to do some adventuring. We learned of the fire consuming the lookout on our drive to the campground :(. Devastating. Simply devastating. My heart goes out to all of the locals who also lost property and livelihoods in that blaze. I look forward to visiting it when the rebuild does occur.

Thank you so much for this video Shaun! I had a serious car accident in May 2022, I was fortunate to walk away from but not without lots of work to get back to "normal". My car written off, my wife and I decided to get back into the 4x4 world (after selling my TLC 60 to @kimreeves2702 ) and we bought a Jeep Wrangler. In July 2022, The Nahatlatch fire tower was the first "long" adventure I would take in the new Jeep. I joined some new offroading friends and took my father in law up there. It was a wonderful adventure and I realized the fire tower was a part of history that I'd never really been aware of before. I had wanted to go back every since, but sadly didn't make it and for now, it's gone... The importance of that tower and location is not lost of course and when the time comes, I would love to swing a hammer or drag some lumber up there to help rebuild it.
Thank you for your story Shaun.

Wildfire has been part of the mountain west ecosystems long before we arrived: terrifying, yes, tragic, occasionally. Yet, next week no one will ask why Gov. The very next day, our camp burned down.

I feel your pain. Wildfires in Colorado near my home claimed many historic sites and places I grew up with as a kid. Almost took my home and my place of work too. They were rebuilt. I'm confident you guys will get it done too. ❤

My attention was drawn to this place by Iohan Gueorguiev - the 'Bike Wanderer' (if you don't know his channel 'See the World' you're missing something really special) - when he rode up and camped the night in between tree planting shifts, and I hoped to get up there sometime. So we lost Iohan a couple of years ago and now we lose the place before I got a chance to visit.. life really sucks sometimes..

This is the thing that saddens me the most about these wildfires. The history we lose. Not just these look-outs but hundreds of old cabins as well. What a shame. Same just happened down here near Osoyoos, it's a tragedy.

Sorry Shaun. I sympathize with you having lived through numerous wildfires in California. It's heartbreaking. What I can tell you is that we always rebuild and overcome. Trees will grow again, and life will return.
Also I want to say you did an amazing job editing this video. That fire tower seems to have played a key part in the evolution of you and your channel. Seems like it was almost alive, a driving force for you. Beautiful edit.

My heart goes out for you guys. Seeing this made a huge lump in my throat and eyes wet from tears that the tower which was so beautiful and the guys rebuilt to its glory is gone in a instant. I know you guys will rebuild and it takes time sometimes a long time for wounds to heal as in a fire like that. Memories live forever and I feel for you and the association and everyone there. It's sad but in time it will be back.
Shaun ( I hope I got your name right ) I'm not the best speller I live in the states in North Western North Carolina the High Country. We have beautiful places here but there it is jaw dropping. I will never be there because of physcial health problems in Arthritis but seeing what God created for us is true and inspriring. I have never seen such footage in videos as I have in these. Just like being there!
I have recently subscribed to your channel because of the overlanding adventures and the friendship and bondage from everyone who has the same interests and taste for the beauty that surround us. I used to go somewhat overlanding a long, long time ago but not to that extreme but it was very enjoyable and to find a place of peace and solitude sometimes along is something we need ever now and then. I had five Jeeps in my day and all were a blast. I miss each one but now I have a 2015 Dodge Ram 1500 Express Cap 4x4 and occasionally I still go out in search of place of beauty and solitude.
I love you guys. I enjoy all your videos and this one really hit me hard in the heart but my thoughts, wishes and above all prayers goes out to you and everyone in your can I say group.
Super great work with the footage that you provide. it is the ultimate the best i have seen yet. Again. my heart goes out to you guys and I know someday the tower will be rebuilt.
End of my too long comment. Enjoy everything.
Michael from North West North Carolina USA_____

Wow.. so sad. It's looks so green that fire could roar through such terrain. I had gotten reports of fire and smoke coming out of Canada and affecting the states.
Such an iconic structure and source of proud men and women utilizing it's importance to keeping forests from devastating fires.
So, never-give-up. You have a new purpose from the reforestation to a new fire tower.
    excellent vid.
