Recreating a 1915 Egg Shampoo

  • So, doing this in the shower would have been waaaaaayyyyy easier. But nope. I went all out and tried to do it in my antique tub. The Victorians/Edwardians would have likely washed their hair in either a basin or in a bath tub (actually in the tub, not just leaning over the side like this idiot over here..). There are countless recipes and variations on technique when it comes to washing your hair with eggs. Almost every old beauty book I've read contains some mention of egg "shampoo", and given the harshness of a lot of the available shampoo at the time, eggs make a lot of sense. Nowadays? Well, if you have your own backyard flock and an excess of eggs it might make sense as a cheap way to wash your hair. Otherwise I can't really recommend it. It does work, but there are plenty of safe, natural shampoos on the market now that are much easier to use!
    Next week I will hopefully post the Q&A I promised two weeks ago. I'm having a bit of trouble with the audio, so I'm going to have to refilm it a third time (argh!). If anyone has any questions they didn't get in to the video before I closed it the first time, I've made the video public again so you may add your question!
    PS: I realized afterwards that this filter makes my grout lines look dirty (they aren't), but I'm too lazy to redo the entire video with a different filter so I'm putting this line in the description so you will know and not judge my grout cleanliness ;)

    Always love your vids!! I often use eggs to "wash" my hair and it is much easier if you add them to a bowl...
    So..I have tailbone length curly hair, and I use 2 eggs, whipped in a bowl , then I also add 2 T of honey and 2 - 4 T of oils (coconut oil, almond, hemp seed, olive...whatever) and apply directly to my scalp and massage. Then put whatever is left on the rest of my hair. I bun it up, and put either a shower cap or bag on it and leave on at least an hour, or even overnight. Even with the oil and honey (as a mask) it completely washes out with water..honestly. If you wanted to just use eggs for cleaning/shampooing...leave in hair half an hour and rinse with water. Eggs are exceptionally effective at cleaning, yet gentle. To get rid of the egg smell, a few drops of lavender, peppermint, or any kind of essential oil in the bowl works a treat!
    Also make for a great facial. Use a raw egg white on face and leave till hard; rinse withe warm water...tah dah...super clean face!
    Keep 'em coming. You do a brilliant job!

      Haha, yes my choice of containers wasn't the best (all my larger bowls are glass and I didn't want to risk breaking anything in the tub). I was thinking that the pour spout on the cup would help but I just couldn't get enough water pressure to rinse out the eggs. I'm sure it's much easier under a proper faucet/shower!
      Thanks for all the details of your egg-routine! I've used eggs as a hair-mask treatment before but I've usually shampooed it out afterwards. I'm curious as to what the honey's purpose in your treatment is. I use it for skincare but have never tried it in anything hair related.
      And I love eggs as a facemask! I used to mix in some lemon juice back in high school and it made such a difference to my acne-prone skin. Eggs and/or honey is my face mask of choice now :)

    Hey everyone, just an update as I've been getting a few odd comments lately: I typically post a disclaimer on my newer videos that the articles I try are for historic interest and aren't meant to be taken as modern advice. If you want to learn the best way to clean your hair with eggs, I'm sure there are some other great videos out there on RUclips that will help you. This video was just me playing around with a historical technique as it was originally written.
    PS: I'm not sure why this rather old video has been getting so many views lately but my new content is much better (at least I hope so!). I have moved on from my "silent" era and do "talkies" now! Please don't judge the quality of my content on this video alone 😅

    Your video made me finally try this whole egg shampoo thing. I have fine oily hair that’s problematic to say the least. I had a full day of oily hair and product come clean with this egg and water combo. And it feels soft, strong and has body. I couldn’t be happier I really think this is what my hair needed.

    When I was about 12, a disgruntled boyfriend smashed an egg on my head at a fairground. I walked the short distance home, washed my hair in cold water (the immersion heater wasn't on) and had the most beautifully conditioned long hair. I've often thought of smashing another egg on my head, especially when fed up with the condition of my hair!

    I have wavy hair and needed to clarify today. I’ve seen stuff on ACV rinses but haven’t gotten around to trying it. Then I saw something about egg shampoo in a VC Andrews novel and decided I needed to do that because why not. Added ACV to the mixture. Second time I’ve scrambled eggs in my hair but luckily I realized I was supposed to be using cold water before it got too bad lol. Currently my wet scalp actually feels clean and moisturized instead of clean and dehydrated. Enjoyed this quite a lot

    Been washing my hair with just egg yolk and honey for two years and it’s been wonderful. I have found that the whites make my hair stiff. Too much protein, and it will very easily become a white solid in the hair (difficult to rinse out, requires picking out pieces).

    I’m going to have to try this! Currently I am using a shampoo bar a friend of mine makes with rosemary, oats, and nettle, which cleans alright and is gentle on my hair, but lathering the bar enough to get small suds, and using a dryer shampoo than a liquid (thus meaning I have to completely soak my perpetually oily hair with water, a difficult task) can take forever. An egg shampoo might be my answer, since I use very fine combs and don’t do a big hair wash every bath (just once or twice a week). I also use witch hazel every morning and night on my face, so I may as well give it a go on my hair. Hopefully it works well!

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper
      @TheLongHairedFlapper  6 лет назад +2

      If you try the witch hazel on your hair let me know how it works! The Victorians/Edwardians seem to have sworn by it but I haven't yet had a chance to experiment with it myself.

    • @horseenthusiast1250
      @horseenthusiast1250 6 лет назад +1

      TheLongHairedFlapper I tried it, and it made my hair a little less oily and easier to manage! I just used a tiny spritz on the top of my head (but not quite at the roots, since the witch hazel has a little bit of alcohol), and then I got a tiny bit on my comb, and that made it a lot easier than normal to comb my hair.

    i tried this but in a different way i guess, i covered my hair with eggs only without adding water to it , and i left it on my hair until it completely dried (it took about 45 mins to dry because the weather is currently very cold and also my hair is short) and then i just washed it off with lots and lots of water it immediately melted the egg and i kept washing it until it was removed , the results were great my hair was super clean i guess when the egg dried on my hair it took off all the excess oil and it was still very soft and way less puffy

    I think the astringent properties of the which hazel would clean it better than the eggs. I use mayonnaise for a once a month conditioner and I know it's the eggs that make it work better than just the oils. So I'd think it's more like conditioning before rinsing the oils away.

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper
      @TheLongHairedFlapper  5 лет назад +3

      Egg whites are also fairly astringent, which is what is doing a lot of the cleaning. But you're right; the egg yolks (as used in mayo) are super moisturizing. Egg "shampoos" are sort of a 2-in-1 type product. I really ought to make an updated version of this video going into a bit more detail about how the eggs actually work.

      Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary is said to have washed her hair using just egg yolks and fine cognac. I’ve heard diluted lemon juice or vinegar can be substituted for the cognac. I think it’s possible, but I’m not going to try it myself :p

    • @TheLongHairedFlapper
      @TheLongHairedFlapper  5 лет назад

      What an interesting recipe! That would probably work quite well, although technically it's the cognac doing most of cleansing (alcohol is a great solvent). I've come across a number of alcohol-used-as-soap recipes in Victorian books but I've always been too nervous to try them as well. They need other ingredients (such as the egg yolk) to prevent them from being too drying.

      Did you not realize the "10 minutes" thing was meant as a joke? The water used in this video was significantly less than would have been used for a person taking a normal shower. The cup I used only holds a little under 2 cups of water. A shower typically uses approximately 34 cups of water per minute. Even if you wash your hair in two minutes that still uses about 68 cups of water, which is significantly more than I used for this demonstration. Please in the future, think for a minute before leaving a rude comment on someones content. Making videos take a lot of time and effort for little-to-no reward, and with the current pandemic I think we could all use to be a little kinder to one another.
