I've performed in the Lippa version, and I genuinely like it, but this version will always have my heart. And Mandy Patinkin as Burrs just sends shivers down your spine.
The more I watch Tony performances here on youtube, the more I appreciate this one. It's really well done, and I especially dig the pans across the cast at the end.
A bit of context (this aired on June 4, 2000): this show wouldn't win a single Tony and close a week after this Tony performance (June 11, 2000), Toni was fresh off an Oscar nomination for "The Sixth Sense" in March, Eartha's "The Emperor's New Groove" would hit theaters in December, Nathan's "The Producers" would begin tryouts in Chicago in February of 2001, Rosie's last talk show would air in June of 2002 (Nathan Lane appeared as a guest no less), and I had seen "AIDA" on Broadway the previous May with my school with my first trip to NYC. It was also the first (and last) time I beheld the Twin Towers in person. This Tony Awards (at least for me) was end of one indefinable era, and, for better or worse, the springboard for another.
I drove 3 times to NY from Boston to see The Wild Party with Mandy Patinkin , Eartha Kitt, Toni Colette and the rest of the fabulous cast. I saw the other Wild Party which I found bland, lacking the edge of every character in the former one. I was so sad that it closed after only 3 months or so. It would be wonderful if George C. Wolfe did another show. Those who never saw his first missed out on a magical night in the theater.
Casting a black actress in the role would have been incredibly powerful considering the context of the original poem and the history of minstrel acts and white passing in that time period.
This Earth did not deserve a woman like Eartha Kitt, but I am glad we got her
When eartha get her solo and the audience goes crazy, it gives me goosebumps. She deserved every cheer and standing ovation.
"Who the hell invited you?" is something you do NOT EVER say to Eartha Kitt.
