I personally believe all the men who have portrayed Jesus have done an exceptional job. Although Ted Neely is my favorite, I do love listening to all renditions!
Well said Pete Beat. I'm a Boomer and prefer the 2000 version with Glenn Carter (saw the '73 version when it first came out). Not disparagingNeeley, just not my preference, and it is maddening that his "followers" feel he is the only one (chosen one) to sing that role. Everyone does it differently; for now, the 2000 rework by Tim Rice works best for me.
Ted Neely was great. WAS. As in was good in the 1970s. Oh, and newsflash to the Neely Nation: He is not actually Jesus!!! No matter what you think or what he tells you, it is simply not true. Kudos to Glenn Carter and anyone else who dares make the role their own, and really owns it.
Wait.. the guy playing Judah's was Simon in the 2000 movie.. I can't decide which role he was better for honestly, "superstar doesn't really showcase as much emotion as Judas' other songs
I am totally amazed that everyone is enthusing over Glenn Carter (who is great) but not more so over Tony Vincent. I find his voice more nuanced and less booming. I am sure I won't win any hearts here by saying this, and I'm not being spiteful, but while this is well staged, it is badly directed. Less would definitely be more. But this soundtrack would be an amazing get.
the musicality theatricality for this number is better than the 2012 revival here they're all more in sync and in the 2012 one it was like a disco the dancers were out of sync this was good '73 is the best but this is really good
@whereswaldo5 it's because in the original broadway production of 2000, he played judas. Though when the filmed the production, he was replaced with Jerome(the guy that played judas in the filmed version
For real. It’s a shame he never was a part of the Broadway production even for just a limited time run. I love his Judas more than Tony Vincent’s Judas.
Check out his Gethsemane on RUclips from the film they did tho. He does it wonderfully. Not sure why not here, except to say when it's live AND in front of a TV audience he may have been too pumped....
Josie DiVincenzo I personally don’t like his high note in the song. It sounds like pure falsetto and lacks a lot of the power that other people put behind it. I also think that, in general, he tended to over act a little throughout the whole show and didn’t have a rock sounding voice. I’m not saying I want it to be crackly and gravelly but it’s too clean for a rock opera. Something like a Brendon Urie type voice is what I think a good middle ground would be.
The guy playing Jesus has an amazing voice, but instead of acting, he is almost like repeating a choreography, he's actually doing EXACTLY the same he did in the movie version, and after watching Steve Balsamo, it's hard for me to like him because he looks so young for the role, and so "un-Christic".
David Joyner/bob west as Barney the dinosaur and ashleigh ball as Blythe Baxter with tim rice and andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ superstar from Barney
I understand what you mean, and I'm not going to tell you you're opinion is wrong. But I think it works in this case. If you just agreed to be killed in one of the most brutal ways possible, you wouldn't be singing a perfect melody. You would be screaming. But that's just my opinion.
I was in a local production of "Jesus Christ Superstar". And our production was costumed very biblically. Our Jesus was better. Of course, I'm biased. LOL That was in 1990.
LOVE that key change Glenn led into. That guy can hold a note!
I love that in this performance, Jesus and Judas are both being played by actors who had previously played Simon. Great upward mobility for that role
The way he changed keys transitioning into "Superstar" gave me chills
Me too!
Hey look who it is! Simon got one hell of an upgrade! (INSERT LAUGH TRACK)
Josh Needel Hehe, Tony Vincent!
JoshTheBlueLantern and the fact that Glen played Simon in the 1996 London cast before is also an upgrade...
I flipped my shit. Simon, the hell, man.
JoshTheBlueLantern Haha, the original Judas pulled out 3 weeks before the show opened!!!
I personally believe all the men who have portrayed Jesus have done an exceptional job. Although Ted Neely is my favorite, I do love listening to all renditions!
Saw Glen Carter in Berlin Deutsche Oper....,.Jesus Christ Superstar live on stage... absolutely amazing...brilliant wonderful ❤️
Absolutely love this! Glenn is the best! Thanks for uploading
Finally someone else who shares the same love of Glenn Carter portraying Jesus!!! I love him too he is amazing
Ikr! He's so talented! And got to love that hair ;) it's always nice to meet another fan!
I literally replayed the couple of seconds that you can see Christian Borle in the background like ten times
WHERE
Gingersnxpp Oh nvm I found him, he did a BIG BOY slide
@@tommytran8880 is he the one with the cap and camera on the left on 2:30 ?
Gingersnxpp Yeup, I initially thought you were pointing out someone else
So LLOOVVEE Tony Vincent
Glenn’s Jesus is my favorite. Makes me smile.
Tony Vincent was SO good in this.
I didn't know Justin Timberlake played Judas...
Lance Bass 👀
@@nina.harr1ngt0n Nick Carter
I can see why you think that considering Justin Timberlake had the ramen noodle style head hair style.
Love this play. Saw this version as well as the 2012 one. The music is superb!
"It's Simon." :D
I honestly like they chose Tony Vincent who played Simon Zealotes in the film to sing as Judas! He honestly fits the role well!!
Well said Pete Beat. I'm a Boomer and prefer the 2000 version with Glenn Carter (saw the '73 version when it first came out). Love Glenn Carter--best vocal performance of Jesus ever. I prefer Jerome Praden as Judas, but Vincent's okay.
seriously, I just want to run up on stage and hug Jesus 💜💚💜
Wait.. the guy playing Judah's was Simon in the 2000 movie.. I can't decide which role he was better for honestly, "superstar doesn't really showcase as much emotion as Judas' other songs
And Glenn, who played Jesus, once played Simon in late 90s before the film.
I guess Simons are really talented
I thought he (Tony Vincent) stole the entire scene.
I am totally amazed that everyone is enthusing over Glenn Carter (who is great) but not more so over Tony Vincent. I find his voice more nuanced and less booming. I have his version on dvd, can’t seem to find in on RUclips

Fun fact, the 2012 revival was originally staged at the Stratford Festival in Ontario, Canada
I saw it twice in Stratford, the cast was amazing!
That guy playing Judas was he not Simon in the 2000 movie
he was! tony vincent
Christian borle's hair is so long
i love when he has long hair
Tony Vincent played Judas in the 2000 Broadway cast.
1:25 BEST BIT OMG
HOLD ON! Why is Simon playing Judas' part?
Because this guy can actually handle the singing, unlike the movie version.
People who played Simon are really talented. The actor who played Jesus in the film and in this performance was used to playe Simon on stage.
@whereswaldo5 it's because in the original broadway production of 2000, he played judas. Though when the filmed the production, he was replaced with Jerome(the guy that played judas in the filmed version
I can dream theatre
Glenn Carter ❣️
The voices on this are awesome, how do a I get a copy of the entire performance. It's not the 2012 revival I see on Amazon, I can't quite find it.
They have a movie recording of this cast (the Judas is dicferent though, and the guy who plays Judas in this video instrad plays Simon)
My dreams had changed i been feeling to be chosen of my parth
thanks for uploading this :D
He sounds exactly like Cher to me.
Wow this sounds totally neutered compared to the original score!
jerome pradon my king was done dirty with this judas recast
For real. It’s a shame he never was a part of the Broadway production even for just a limited time run. I love his Judas more than Tony Vincent’s Judas.
Amazing
The boy who sing the Judas song is Simon. Why?
Jose Palacios it's possible he was an understudy for the actual Judas.
0:30
Alt title:
*If history changed and Simon is the one who committed suicide and and in his past life, was in a boy band*
Jesus Christ superstar
Nail polish Art
Steve Balsamo does the best Gethsemane, hands down
Crucifixion of Jesus
Good idea skipping the high note of Gethsemane, for this singer.
Check out his Gethsemane on RUclips from the film they did tho. He does it wonderfully. Not sure why not here, except to say when it's live AND in front of a TV audience he may have been too pumped....

Love this show also hey I’d take Rum Tim tugger and his friends but if they were real cats I’d get crazy cat girl lol
Ted Neely will always Be the Best in this Roll
dvddmc *role😁
NM AT Tim Minchin is the best Judas though
NM AT Minchin was not my first, but he had the best raw emotion and feeling behind his singing and acting
Ian Gillan
dvddmc yes Ted Neeley will I agree no one can hit those notes beautiful like Ted He's my jesus
simon turned into judas-
jesus christ superstar is the best
pleeeease......sing the damn song, dont scream it!!!!!
I understand what you mean, and I'm not going to tell you you're opinion is wrong. But I think it works in this case. If you just agreed to be killed in one of the most brutal ways possible, you wouldn't be singing a perfect melody. You would be screaming. But that's just my opinion.
It comes across as melodramatic to scream the song.
srsly the only version where both judas and jesus can sing xD
You haven’t seen nearly enough versions then lol
I was in a local production of "Jesus Christ Superstar". And our production was costumed very biblically. Our Jesus was better. Of course, I'm biased. LOL That was in 1990.
No one compares to Ted Neely...
Mirta Beata Ian Gillan, John Farnham, Steve Balsamo, Paul Nolan, Drew Sarich...
Jeez bad jokes
Meh, Neely isn't that great. Glenn actually sings the notes.
Dan Vasc can do this better than you sir like thats the way it goes
god damn this is easily the worst version of JCS to exist, the whole movie cast was honestly awful
Kailtyn Parker Agreed
judas and the chipmunks!
Haha
Well that was horrible.
Billy Idol wannabe
Boo!
So weak.
Jesus Christ superstar
