  • Lux Aurumque ("Light and Gold", sometimes "Light of Gold") is a choral composition in one movement by Eric Whitacre. It is a Christmas piece based on a Latin poem of the same name, which translates as "Light, warm and heavy as pure gold, and the angels sing softly to the new born baby". In 2000, Whitacre set a short Latin text for mixed choir a cappella. In 2005, he wrote an arrangement for wind ensemble. The choral version became known through Whitacre's project Virtual Choir in 2009.
    Performers : Eric Whiteacre singers
I do not own the record and the score.

Alto 1 here! The harmonic saturation in this piece is just otherworldly. It feels so warm, so luminous and calm. It reminds me of choral music of Northern Europe. This kind of music is so beautiful, because it makes everyone feel like they are singing a very important part (all of them contributing to create that sort of shining, almost blinding light). It makes me feel like I am a little lonely star in a dark universe; but then, more and more stars begin to shine, and everything is light :).

We get by very well lol. We go through training from our choir teachers, voice teachers, voice instructors, etc. to extend our breath hold as well as learning how to hold notes with proper placement, so we don't end up passing out, fainting, or falling over. If you have a proper choir teacher who knows how to teach us, it makes a world of difference. You could say as many times, till the cows come home, "do this," or even "sing that," but it won't do us any good if you can't help train us how to do it. I'm only speaking on my experience. Not my place to say for any other choir kids. In short what you hear in this song is my dream: singing this gorgeous piece of music. Again, speaking on my experience, this is why I got involved with choir in the first place. It has always been my dream to sing songs of this caliber. Haven't had the chance to be apart of Eric Whitacres virtual choir 1-4, but have had the immense privilege and honor of my choral career to be apart of Eric Whitacres 5th and 6th virtual choirs. Singing the tenor part of those two choirs has made my dream come true. Also well trained choral singers will tell you certain songs are very difficult to sing. Any other choir kids, or choral singers agree? Please feel free to add, or share your experience.

@@risvegliato I fully agree, and to me the beautiful North American Choral Music seems to be deeply rooted in the seminal works of Brahms and sometimes also Bruckner. Composers will have studied the works of these giants very thoroughly. Also, there is a strong connection of the romantic Viennese tradition to the WWII emigration wave towards Hollywood - think of all the film composers... Korngold etc. etc.

@@rorycraig It should not be interpreted that way. The chord progression is a Major I to Major IV with suspensions. Analytically, you could pretend it's a D# Minor chord but the function of the chord is definitely major, making it an F#M chord (which is why it sounds so nice and purposely creates a clean overtone series)

Gabe Fynsk it is a D#m11 and the chord extensions the 7th, 9th and 11th just so happen to be C#, E# and G#. Thats why it sounds kinda like major. The IImin can substitute the IV so you’re right about the function.

As a bass 2 that c#2 at the end is grueling.

    From bar 38 should’t it be with 7 sharps i.e. C# major ?
