Old songwriters never die, they just de-compose. But seriously folks, he lived to be, what, 32 years old? Composed 41 full symphonies Operas, Concertos, Piano pieces. You try doing that. The greatest composer ever. Stop me if I'm wrong.

Symphony #40 was my main study piece for my GCSE. Most recordings I have heard have been too fast. This is the closest to what I remember listening to for 2 years every night. I never got bored of it. Never will. So far my fave recording of it. Can't believe in 1988 I knew every note of this, and the Beatles album Help, which I can't and won't listen to since my final exam. Tubular Bells was my 3rd composition to study, and anyone who likes just a tiny bit of music can listen to that forever, 4th and final was Louis Armstrong, that was like learning maths times tables. Jazz makes my brain give up, like a million string instrument players tuning up at the same time. Grinding teeth and nails down blackboards are like a running stream compared to Jazz. So for a very important part of my life Mozart's 40th was a massive part of my life.
I come back to it often, with such fond memories. Now that I've found the one that is more the speed of our old 33rpm. Ok, essay over.
    thanks for the upload

+moggsy 71 (moggs) Thanks for sharing that story. I listen to a lot of classical music while working on these crazy algebra problems for my research. Symphony 40 never ceases to motivate me when I have kind of had it with work or study.
Could you share with us how you think we should listen to this marvelous piece of art? What should we pay close attention to? etc.. Or something interesting you discovered while researching it?
      Cheers!

      * Yes - thank you ! Finally - someone who is spot on regarding the correct tempo ! Most recordings ARE too fast losing the inherent lyricism of the melody in the frantic translation :( You are a kindred spirit moggsy 71 :)

This reminds me of when I was a child in Italy and would walk the path around the woodlot a mile and a half to the village every other day in the early forties to buy bread for my mother for our supper. As I would pass by the old womans cottage near the footbridge, she would always be playing clasical music and would give me a cookie to eat on my way to market. I'll never forget those quiet walks or those cookies....I'm just kidding, I'm 47 and live in California but I do love clasical music.

Art Form Music is some of the greatest music of all time. It includes the following periods: Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th Century periods. I studied Art Form music in college at age 19 and fell in love with it. The sonata format that was developed with the Classical period is such a wonderful format.

Hearing how seamlessly symphonies 39-41 transition into each other convinces me Mozart intended them to be played one after the other.

never have been a huge fan of classical music. i like being able to sing lyrics. however, i'm a freshman in high school this year and i took a music appreciation class, and during our last chapter which was the Classical Period, we learned a lot about Mozart and studied this symphony. i could listen to it all day.
