Dude! Thank you so much for this video, I almost didn't watch it. I did my usual 5 mile path today and was mindful to try and push from the middle of the skate the whole time. I can't believe how much of a difference this made, i felt like I had more power, stability and control and I shaved 2 minutes off my usual time. No one's ever explained this so thank you!!
The first person who overthrows his pride of a world champion and shares tips and whatever he learnt for the upcoming gen.. hats off sir.... Love you ❤️❤️
I just came back to skating after 10 years so i realise this is beyond me for now but I'm so impressed at how much mind-muscle connection or muscular intention (if that makes sense) skating involves! The only other time I've done something that demanded that level of consciousness was when I used to work out and i was introduced to the idea of mind-muscle connection and priming movements and rep tempos to help develop it and that is what I loved about working out.
I'm just a casual skater but his tip has helped to greatly improve my skating. The position of your frame on your boot has helped a lot too. Thanks so much.
This and your tips-on-hips video I saw right before this are godsends for this self teacher. Thank you for the tips and the flows. I may not foray into speed or races, but when I have to make my getaway from the bad guys, while on skates, I`ll have these tips in your back pocket.
coaches might hate this video, but hopefully it will encourage a better understanding and a new way to teach it... or at the very least a different perspective
Awesome explanation! I always hear "Push from your heal". But it feels better, to me, when pushing from the middle. Thank you so much for cleaning this up!
Thank you for sharing , I don't use rollerblade skates since kindergarten, there I put all my class knowing how to skate, but I'm now in my 30's and I didn't remember how to get the balance anymore. I went to buy rollerblade skates for several times and end up giving up. This time I will do it 😃 it's so fun and I have a bike street near me 😊
Thanks, mate., what a revelation. This tutorial has helped improved my skating significantly. 'Settling' my skates and getting the balance right makes my skating more efficient, more comfortable and I feel more stable. Cheers.
Killer discussion. Great point about coaches calling for overcorrection (heel carve/push) of a problem to find a happy medium. Thanks! I find your tutorial really helpful, especially how you go into details, that helps me understand better what exactly I need to do. For example, in other videos people only said that where you need to keep your weight, without saying HOW to do it, and you're the first to say it has to do with ankle positioning.Really great explanations!
Great video; I really enjoyed it. And Joey, your visualization suggestions, are really good. Please keep up the good vidoes; they're by far the most instructive and useful videos out there. Thank you.
Hello I am a totally amateur skater. I skate because it is fun. Usually I ride 25Km per session on a 3×110 wheels, three or four times per week. It adds up to ~2500Km per year (Average speed of ~23Km/h). Luckily, I saw this video when it was released, about one year ago. Before this video, I felt or thought that the weight distribution should be equal on each wheels. I measured the diameters of the wheels briefly on every week, and more precisely when I cleaned the bearings and swapped the wheels. In 3-4 weeks times the diameter difference between the front and the rear wheels become 3-4mm. For example: front=105mm; rear=108mm The wheel size and the wheel wear, is not an instant feedback, but I think it is a pretty strong feedback about the technique. So, I started to pay (more) attention to the push phase, and in general. It was not easy and it is still not easy. I have to focus on every stroke, but nowadays the diameter difference between the front and the rear wheels is 0.5-1.0mm. @Joey Mantia Thank you for your tutorials.
Thank you so much for your videos!♡ Many of your suggestions make totally sense and it's awesome to be able to correct myself after hearing your explanations and actualy seeing the "do's and dont's ". I am skating now for about 10 years and always "staying on the same spot" - I did not really improve my skills over the years because I'm still afraid of falling (did not fall enough.. ), still only able to use the back break f.ex. - I would love to see some content on getting more secure with/on skates in general, like "how to fall avoiding your worst nightmares" 😅 Anyways - thank you for sharing your knowledge, Greetings from Austria :)
Extremely delighted you made this video because I am constantly thinking about this issue. Would this perspective apply when using rockered skates - such as endless-blading frame?
Hi Joey, I have a question, when on my skates I can't kee my feets straight they are pronating inside. What can I do to improve my feet position? Thank you for your videos they are so useful and i learned a lot from your videos.
3x110 is very disappointing in my experience in comparison to a 4x80 or 4x90 setup. I dont know why but there is not much more speed to gain or maintain with three wheels. Maybe the stock wheels from Rollerblade are crap but i cant imagine there will be such a big boost from different wheels with the same hardness.
@@JakubCiesielski That is true but stability on 3x110 is not an issue for me at all, it's more like pushing feels like walking in dough and the roll is also less than expected.
I just picked up skates, knowing they'll train my balance for Alpine skiing. Those wheels are frigging HIGH! So I'm a rank beginner. At 61. But the good news? Whatever I do - however much I accomplish - it's going to pay off sharpening my balance on the ski hill.
First of all, awesome video. Have you tried a rockered frame ever? If you have, do you have any advice as to how to swich from that to a speed set up? Thanks
@@JoeyMantiaSkates I almost feel bad for making you reupload the video, but in a way it's better now and it might be that will to correct the little details that made you world champion
I have lost little bit avg speed when changed 4 x 90 old rollerblade skates to 3 x 110 macroblades. I'm ice hockey player (played 30 years), so the travel speed and position is far from skating position on Ice hockey. I ordered new 3 x 125 skates from rollerblade to see, is the macroblade 3x110 really the problem, or are the lower 4x90 skates more like ice hockey skates and naturally feels better. My top speed in flat are something under 30kmh, but the problem is keeping good, over 20kmh travel speed at several longer times. Great channel, had to try all the tips!
While watching tips for perfect balance I had a picture in my head - 3 wheels setup with 125mm wheel in the middle and other wheels 110mm. I wonder how it would be to skate on something like that :)
Hi Joey Thanks for this tutorial, its very helpfull for me. I have a question about the wheels you are using. I have the same wheels and I ask myself is there a difference how the wheels are mounted because of the curved hub. The left and the right wheels are turning in opposit direction. I was slipping with my right push. Turns out I was pushing with my heels too much. Shifted the balance forwards (aiming for the middle) and got symmetrical grip now.
Good video. I’ve been skating for 25 years and I’m always looking to improve. I’ve noticed that skating uphill I stay on my back wheels and it’s helps power me up the hill. What do you think about hills?
yea when it comes to hills you usually can't use the same style that you would normally use, especially when it gets steep. I'm going to do a video about skating up and down hills at some point. Glad you found some value here.
Hi Joey. Thanks for this video. Your fans really appreciate what you do!! I have been skating and racing on quads since 1978. Skating is in my DNA. For most of my life I have been able to compete, but now when I go to races everybody else in my age division is on inlines and the best finish I have had in the last 3 years is 2nd place. I finally got some Bont Z inlines and I started skating them yesterday. I have a terrible burning on my shin muscles when I skate. My guess is that I am doing something wrong. Or, is this something every inline skater goes through until they build those muscles over time? I must say that I like these inlines and I am already faster than I was on quads with a little help from a member of our speed team. He said he didn't know why they would be burning like that. Any ideas why the shin muscles would be burning would be appreciated. Thanks.
Great video, and thanks for details, i just have 1 question. I watched your video on the coin trick and understand what your putting down in both of these videos, yet what is the optimal boot to frame set up for both indoor and outdoor? I feel this would effect or change the balance. Thanks
Appreciate the view. I have to give you a little bit of an annoying answer and say there isn't necessarily an ideal spot to put it. There's certainly no body or boot reference that you can use and immediately just have the "correct" offset, which is why the process tends to take a long time to get right. A lot of it depends on how well the boot is made and how well it fits your foot. Ultimately, you're searching for a feel of being completely connected to the wheels-- that's to say that when there's a change in edge (whether that is a subtle or aggressive change) that it happened because you wanted it to and not because the boot "fell" or "collapsed" that way. It's a feeling of control you're after really. The important epiphany you need to have in my opinion is that this doesn't come from JUST your frame setup. There's a lot that can/ needs to be trained to find that control, hence why I prefer to set it in a general starting spot and skate a week or so before I make any big changes to give your body a moment to see if it can adapt. At the end of the day if you have a poorly fitting boot, there's no frame position that will give you the control I'm talking about, especially on bigger wheels.
@JoeyMantiaOfficial no answer is annoying, its all knowledge, plus if it's the same as the motorcycle world I come from , I completely undertand. Too much talk. Show this by demonstrating while you skate.
Please speak sloower 😢
My apologies. Always trying to work on that. You can try to slow it down to 0.75 speed
