Theo for guest of the year for sure. Love that he’s not afraid to speak out and has no filter when it comes to the important stuff. Absolutely hilarious bloke too!
Theo is a brilliant guest, not only has a lot to say, he clearly did the thinking about it part as well - he made a ton of good points about the ominous WC changes and what would make more sense! And so did you two as hosts. Very good episode! 👍
Omg. The whoop bpm I’ve been laughing at since the first race. 150bpm at the end of a race run lololol so stupid. Theo is a legend and so glad he’s so unfiltered and a spot on analysis of what’s going on. Best dh podcast in recent memory.
Do you think the bpm is faked or like way out of time or something? I think that's the case with the speed they put up for sure. It'll say like 50kph as they enter a turn and go down to 49 when they exit. No way lol
@@yeahboiproductions7065 I think wrist worn heart rate monitors like the whoop are very inaccurate in a sport like dh where there’s so much abrupt movement and arm straining/flexing. If they had chest worn hr monitors those are very very accurate. Also the way those athletes are breathing at the end of a race run they should be between 180-210 depending on age/genetic make up. Again just my opinion as someone who was a wrench for racers for years.
Great pod guys, my discovery subscription got cancelled the minute the racing was done. Im sure im not alone. Honestly if we didn't have two exciting country men in the mix this year ( Ronan and Oisin) we probably would have just been happy with a few podcasts like yours , Needles , Downtime, Ride companion and the media the riders put out themselves. Literally the best thing out of this circut right now is WynTv. As always the racers are incredible but i doubt we'll get see a new Ronan or Locky come up through the field going forward. I think so many of us are hoping Redbull will do this feeder series. They seem to know the value in a story. I know Discovery is this massive organization but it feels like amerture hour. Dont get me wrong it was the same at redbull but Warner n crew made that a positive with humour, emotion , you just knew they had all got their knees dirty . They where riders at heart like us
Awesome episode guys. I would like to know how they can call it world cup when they only have events in Europe and one event in a french Provence of Canada. Really it should be called European cup. Also on the subject of it being hard to view, Australian fans have been put behind a double pay wall.
Because it includes athletes from all over the world? I agree about the paywall, it's the same in Europe. I paid for Eurosport this year, only for them to discontinue coverage after 3 races. Then I had to pay for HBO Sports package to watch world cups and sign up for a VPN to watch World Championships. I guess the idea is to attract casual sports viewers who already subscribe to these packages, but I'm not sure it's going to work. I've shown DH races to loads of non-mtb people over the years and even with Rob Warner commentating, they found it hard to get excited about the racing. It never looks as steep or dangerous on tv and it's hard to appreciate the difficulty and technicality of the sport. It's just not that interesting to watch for the casual viewer who isn't into mtb. I don't tune into downhill skiing, and even that is a bigger sport than dh mtb.
Super proud to call Theo a fellow saffa. People should take a page out of his book and speak up more. Nothing will change unless people do something to make a change. Great podcast and I hope Chris Ball does listen to it.
Theo is superb and his point about the CEO being invisible is telling. The UCI should listen to this. Seems like a ridiculous change up going on. As for the massive hike in fees for teams, is that their way of funding better prize money…?
I wish some company like red bull or fucking anyone would come along and start their own world cup - done right and in the best interests for the sport and racers, it would be interesting to see who and what teams would jump in on that so we could all finally fuck off the uci et al. Tracks for riders by riders. Better sponsorship and pay for the racers, better coverage without shit commentary, the benefits are endless really. if only...
@@jessery475 can you imagine? I know a fair few of the riders who do hardline, and especially the new tassie one last year were frothing on that track saying WC tracks should be more like that. A hardline-esque world race series would be phenomenal! 🤘
Discovery don't actually think about or care what teams have to do to run a team. All these decisions have been made in a boardroom by people who have never even watched the sport let alone understand what it takes to compete.
My interest to watch is as big as ever, but lack of access has stopped me from doing so. In fact, similar to what Teo is saying, I have become more invested in all other types of events instead of world cup. There is so much better coverage there, and even the prep work on those tracks is brilliant to watch. Just look at how Rampage dig team videos are engaging audience, or Dark Fest type events. That should be worth a ton for the venue as you can literally go to those places too if a certain location seems to have particularly good ground crew working on the trails/tracks.
The flip side of this is not seeing your top riders racing in their home countries because they are basically away all season. No great for grass roots racing.
A lot more Theo's, BK's and Rissveds need to stand up and be counted. The riders have the most power to shape the future of the sport. Time for them put the greed machine in its place and fight for their worth. Well done TRC.
Great show guys, you killed it, just one thing tho, Red Bull, fuck them for what they did to Brendog at Rampage, actually had a pretty solid show predating F1's drive to survive, remember Fast life, stupid thing was they were only featuring Specialized team. I had a blast watching that show thru COVID
But in all seriousness, if categories covered and social media reach are focus points, Pivot is already in good shape. They got both DH and Enduro covered with both men and women. And its fair to say that BK is pretty social media savvy... the only "issue" might be that BK likes to say what he thinks and he might dunk hard on some of the changes, especially the money side. If they ask for a few 20-30k to get in and the price money stays as pathetic as it is now, add some really amateur class venue organization, he's going to blow a gasket and who knows what that repercussions that might have...😅
It seems like they’re trying to make it similar to road cycling but the difference is you already have established teams across different professional level and loads more money. Plus in road cycling you might have the same few people winning the grand tours but you also have the daily stage wins, king of the mountain, best young rider, and sprint jerseys that the other teams can win and build their teams towards winning. You need to establish the framework and systems before making major decisions.
Those calls have come from Discovery stakeholders. They want a bigger profit. It’s that simple. This will slowly kill DH. Especially for younger riders
Hey The Ride Companion! I wonder if the executives at Discovery Warner who wrote this project 2025 Mtb document actually Ride mountain bikes? The executives will do whatever increases their stock price whether its good for the sport and the riders or not. They seem to have the attitude that if the current racers don't like the changes they can be replaced. Ride ride ride!
Me and my wife are the only people who watch the world cup out of everyone we know. It's rediculous. 3 or 4 years ago there was maybe 1 or 2 out of everyone who didn't watch it, but they'd still know what happened. Now it's the complete opposite and those who don't watch the races don't really know what's happened because their interest just isn't what it used to be. I've cancelled my subscription now the season's over
Theres something in Sport and Product Alignment talking about 3 minutes of racing. Does that men Ft William is done? No way you can bring that down to 3 minutes.
Wish the riders would tell WB if you dont listen to our feedback then you wont have a race series at all. Majority of riders and fans seem to hate the format and they are ruining this great sport by throwing a last minute spanner in the works changing requirements to be able to race next season. Definitely wont see same amount of new riders coming through with lack of spaces on teams. Coverage is also nowhere near as good as it once was and they charge you for the privilege of watching their crap product......
Possibly the best TRC quote yet: The sickest downhill tracks can be made with 5 stoners and some rakes - Theo Erlangsen 🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏
Hahahaha

You wouldn’t think he got super nervous before recording would ya?! Haha
You 3 guy nailed it on this episode. To my surprise Theo actually talks so much sense about what the world cup needs to change.
Thanks Ben
Excellent episode!! It's extremely interesting and Theo was the perfect guest to have on for this subject!! Awesome stuff cheers!
Glad you enjoyed it!

This was such a great episode i really liked the insides on this stuff. Also 100000% agree on guest of the year with Theo. Such a Legend!
I saw the 2025 race schedule. And no mention of any UK held race? What a shame, the country has so much potential for good race runs
🤷🏼♂️
what a legend. pleasure to listen to lads.
Big up Carl mate

Can confirm Trans Madeira is Type 2 hard. I'm 54 and completed the autumn edition just a few weeks ago. Planning my training to return next year 😂
Another banger. Thanks for the insights! What a lekker epi.
Is was a good one! Could listen to Theo all day!
Just watch again! Problem solved 😂
Met Theo in the carrefor in Morzine. Legend, bloke is a scream! Nice guy also
One of the best personalities in DH/MTB, what a guy

Man Theo, what a great dude. Such balanced conversations, inside knowledge, and personal experience. 💪🫡
Best podcast!❤❤
Theo laugh is infectious
Innitttt
Love that he called out Lance stroll 🤣
No mention of the fact theres now 10 rounds! More than I can ever remember... brilliant move

how crazy would it be Aaron Gwin designs the dh track at lack placid for next year but doesnt get to race is cause of these changes
Quite crazy

Probably all of it….

2026 season DH World Champs will be based entirely on social media following. Pilgs for the win , Warner would also do well 😂
Apparently Taylor Swift has been looking at DH bikes

Fact
Need a strong riders union I reckon. You’re the product so make your voice heard
WC DH is basically over. F UCI. F Whoop. Riders organize and start over.

Warner bros have so much money they don’t care what anyone thinks . They have the “Formula 1 “ of mountain biking in the bag

Guys, what if we all chime in (MTB fans) 100-500€.. we could make own series and ditch UCI.
yes
How does a junior ride make their way in the sport?
TikTok dances
Theres something in Sport and Product Alignment talking about 3 minutes of racing. Does that men Ft William is done? No way you can bring that down to 3 minutes.
