    I'm actually completely on board with the whole LABO thing. I think it's a really clever way of playing with your switch and showing you different ways you can use it.
    You're not paying for cardboard. You're paying for the game... and cardboard.

      Lukas Sprahn buuut that would defeat the whole a ye and crafts thing in IDEAS. And it would make it hard to build. The carboard is like the charm of LABO

    17:01 there is a mode where you can create music and layer different parts on the track. There’s also a care with punch outs that allows you to make a drum beat. It’s fairly in depth for what it is.

    Regardless of people knocking the kit, the cardboard delivers the technology in a very friendly way. The technology at play here inside these cardboard boxes as pretty amazing, and the processing time between all the I/O is also excellent for such a small device. Nintendo proving once again that they are a very good tech company.
    Personally I've never owed any Nintendo equipment, so I look at it from a general perspective and i'm impressed. The kit looks like it will encourage kids to develop in a SDK and push the technology into areas that Nintendo hasn't even thought of yet.
    Yes a lot of the tech already has real-world applications, but nowhere near this price point. You add quite a bit of value to your device through this kit without stretching to something like an Oculus. I have a Galaxy Gear VR headset and whilst its OK, similar to the full blown Oculus, its nice but still a fair way to go for immersive platforms.

    the thing i am annoyed about is people saying "Oh we're spending 70 to 80 dollars on cardboard" NO, you are spending around 55 to 60 on the game hardware and time to build while actually spending 15 to 20 on cardboard, anyone else realize this?

      Koizumi Izumi exactly! and the engineering behind these, I have given up trying to tell people that while gundam is not just plastic, then why are these just card board?

      People saying it haven't actually watched the video. Will mentions towards the end that replacement cardboard kits are available for $3~4 per kit. I'm definitely more into this from both a tactile and sustainable point of view compared to conventional plastic consoles and flat screen gaming

    I gave my 11 year old grandson the Labo Variety kit and I have to say. It is awesome! He has made almost everything in the kit all by himself and the quality of the cardboard when put together is very sturdy and works like a charm. We all gasp in amazement with each product he creates! I was on the fence about the labo robot kit as a Christmas gift for him because the price and fact that it is one item of cardboard until I watched your video and demonstration of how the robot work after assembly. I was impressed and I think he will love this. What else can you get an 11 year old anyway??? So thank you and I am going to bite the bullet and pay the price and surprise him with for Christmas!! Well done!

  • @DarkusZarvix
    @DarkusZarvix 6 лет назад +134

    I LOVE this idea. From an environmental standpoint, not using plastic is a HUGE plus! I have all the remotes back from the Wii Sport days still gathering dust. I think this will also get many young kids who put these together with their parents into engineering as well. Even if they aren't perfect, it is REALLY showing the Nintendo has a unique take on the controllers. I just wish I had a switch now. XD

    • @canalfechado5316
      @canalfechado5316 6 лет назад +3

      mind you they are still making nintendo switch controllers wich by the way, are still made from plastic (and some metals), so they will still gather dust (like the wii remotes). nintendo ran out of ideas, so they started using expensive cardboard as a desperate cash-grab for kids. personally i dont think its "unique", i think its desperate.

    • @TTalksVA
      @TTalksVA 6 лет назад +12

      so, you think 80 dollars for a cardboard pack that will just fall apart most likely within the first year of use is a good thing?........... what's next?, ducktape nintendo garbage?

    • @DarkusZarvix
      @DarkusZarvix 6 лет назад +7

      From an environmental standpoint, it is good. This makes the controllers compostable or recycleable and not made of plastic. Like they said in the video, replacement pieces are a few dollars. The original $80 you pay is mainly the experience of building it and not the actual materials. If it is kept in good care, it should last a while. I know with kids that makes this difficult. But who knows, they might have set this version out as cardboard to test to see if people like this sort of build kit. Future versions may be more robust...

    • @canalfechado5316
      @canalfechado5316 6 лет назад +4

      you said: "From an environmental standpoint, it is good. This makes the controllers compostable or recycleable and not made of plastic." but again as i said before: "mind you they are still making nintendo switch controllers wich by the way, are still made from plastic (and some metals)" so even if they are making cardboard toys now, they are still making nintendo switches and controllers made of plastic , wich aren't compostable or recycleable like cardboard, so unless they make ALL the new controllers made out of cardboard, there will be no real enviromental impact (that is, things will still be crappy for the enviroment), besides, ever since the announcement they weren't getting any praise so i dont think that the controllers being "recycleable" will be a major selling point.
      edit: put colons after "you said"

    • @DarkusZarvix
      @DarkusZarvix 6 лет назад +10

      Cutting out as much plastic as possible will ALWAYS have an impact. Going by your logic... "Cars that are solar/electric powered won't have an impact on climate change if other brands are still making cars that use gasoline, so why bother?" With that kind of pessimistic thinking, nothing with ever change for the better in this world. EVERY BIT you take OUT of a problem, ALWAYS has a positive impact. It isn't as good as if both the switch AND controllers were made of more recycleable materials, sure, but this is a good start. There's always a first step and I hope Nintendo keeps going with this idea. By the way, my reply was to "mirrosedgy", not you.

    I'd like to see Nintendo expand on the Labo, with even more Toy Cons in the future. Also, Toy Con support for other games. I can imagine Mario Kart 9 hypothetically having Toy Con Bike support, or a rhythm game on the Toy Con Piano. There's a lot of potential there.

    • @EthicsGradient
      @EthicsGradient 6 лет назад +1

      The templates are available (www.nintendo.co.jp/labo/parts/) but you would need to buy one of each kit to get the software - they're different cartridges, not everything on one.

    • @michalelston568
      @michalelston568 6 лет назад +1

      no it does not contain both. then it would be one kit not two. It has been clear from the start. one kits has the variety and one has the robot

    • @tbyhmes1184

      Michal Elston whatever it takes to make the experience less costly. I would want the robot, and only the piano. Would only purchase robot kit, and order piano parts from the store. But without piano directions in robot cartridge, I’d have to get both kits to make the piano. =\

    • @DracoAngelZero
      @DracoAngelZero 6 лет назад

      You will still need the variety kit to make the piano work, since the software that makes the piano kit work isn't in the robot kit software. I'm guessing, in the future maybe there will be a way to download only the part you want to play with from the E-Shop... But that will MAYBE be very far in the future...

    You can actually download the blueprint patterns from Nintendo's site if you need to replace some or all of the cardboard parts. Only you have to cut them with an X-acto knife yourself. The spare kits Nintendo sells come already perforated so they save you time for the cost.
    But the pdf blueprints are useful for transferring the patterns on things other than cardboard as well.

    So little reviews actually point out the Garage feature... Kind of one of the main features of this game.

      In the past I noticed during interviews that he liked to interject to finish people's thoughts/sentences and it felt rude to me.
      In this video in particular I think people are annoyed that he keeps saying "WHAT!". Which I don't find funny or like but doesn't really bother me that much.

      He talks about things he doesn't know and acts like he does (the Still Untitled when he talks about AI comes to mind, fucking CRINGE listening to that), he interrupts people constantly, and not for something interesting like Adam, but just some nonsense so we all know how "smart" he is. I think he is a fine dude, but not a great presenter, interviewer or public personality. He's one of the few regulars on RUclips that I struggle to ignore.

    The robot kit seems super cool but I'd imagine that the game gets old real quick. If there was multiplayer, it would be a totally different story. But it seems like the vehicle and variety kits are the way to go. I just can't imagine playing that robot game for more than 20 minutes.

    Nintendo patented attaching the Switch Pad onto a headset for VR. So I'm sure putting the Switch Pad on the robot helmet was the plan at some point.

    You’re paying more than half of the half of the Switch, for an add-on FOR the Switch that’s bigger than the Switch!

    There is a more advanced version of the piano game that has waaayyyy more features and is pretty amazing. I'm sad that no one that made a video on it has explored those amazing features.
