- Hello everyone,
Today we're heading to the Amerton railway to drive another Ruston 44/48 - but this time there's a twist, this one hasn't pulled a train in twenty one years, and they asked me if I fancied taking it for a spin!
If you like what you see in the video and fancy visiting or becoming part of the Amerton railway, visit their website:

A video featuring:
Lawrie - suitably honoured presenter
Ben - Cameraman falling in love with the narrow gauge!
A massive thank you to the Amerton railway and the owners of the locomotive!

I am a simple man I see a Lawrie Goes Loco episode, I enjoy It, quality content from someone who is genuinely passionate about the topic, keep it up!!
Glad to hear you're enjoying the videos! I do love railway stuff!
6:21 “And I think every Thomas the Tank Engine fan recognizes them to be Rusty.”
Yes, yes we do.
It's a pretty recognisable design!
It is such a pleasure to watch someone as genuinely excited as you play with trains and stuff . Cheers from Australia
Thank you very much! We're so excited to know we're being watched from all around the world
Your enthusiasm for trains knows no bounds, thats keeping me involved and as happy as frog in a pond to keep watching!😅
Thank you for another amazing video and I think I can speak for everyone, we all love and appreciate what you do!
You're really welcome, it's great you guys are enjoying what we're doing!
Couldn't help but laugh seeing you talking away to yourself in the cab from outside, you're the only person whose ever made me interested in locomotives, your passion is infectious.
That's really nice of you to say so! I'm just glad you're enjoying it.
"A goods train, a goods train" Lawrie huffed as he rounded the bend
It was fun working a freight!
“Oh the shame of it, oh the shame of it.”
Goods is way more fun!
"the Owner laughed and went to find more trucks"
The joy you get from these machines and convey through these videos is absolutely contagious!
Thank you, glad to hear that you are enjoying watching me get overly excited about old machinery!
I absolute love this locomotive!
It's completly adorable.
(I even decided to make a model of one of those small locomotives for a mining train based on the Märklin rockwagons if i can get a singel pice 00 motorboggi, 00 is a quite rare scale in my coutry but i taught it would match my old 1930s Hornby Tankloco if it's slightly bigger than the H0 locos i hawe in my collection but can still use the same system as the German H0 trains i think. For now the miniature trains is as close i can get the full size i guess... but i still dreaming... ha ha. ).
It's a super little thing, I quite agree!
Good luck with your project, it'll be interesting to see how it turns out!
Railway modelling is really good fun and very rewarding too!
Every single video he says "this is MARVELOUS". Very good videos 10/10
Congratulations on being invited to the test run and that's certainly a nice little Ruston. They've done a good job and I liked the rolling stock as well. Compared to prepping and raising steam on something like the saddle tank loco you reviewed, it must have seemed like a new world when the drivers changed over to diesels. No more fireman's breakfasts though...
Oh and congratulations on now reaching 15,000+ subscribers!
Cooking on the shovel is mega fun!
Thank you, we really enjoyed going up and driving the Loco - what an honour!
You can understand why crews where happy to swap over. So much less prep.
Thank you, we're blown away by how fast it's all grown!
Love your videos! I’m part of a group trying to get our Local narrow gauge railway, the Alford Valley Railway up and running again and watching your videos is a great inspiration to try get the Alford locos running again!
Thank you, best of luck to you guys. That's a big challenge - keep us updated with how you get on!
After every Lawrie goes Loco episode, I always start browsing for used locos!
Good idea! Glad to be fanning the flames of Loco ownership!
That face when you lighted it. Absolutely priceless 😁
I was very happy
Ruston are such small engines but they server their purposes!
Shunting and pulling small trains, but seeing a Ruston run this well after 21 years of not being used is amazing!
The restoration was really very intensive!
They're pretty well built little machines, and this one is like new!
Lawrie, you keep reminding me of my family history. My Grandfather told me he would have to put his pipe out before driving a steam engine to pick up his train at the ammunition factory during WW2! A bit more risky than a little Ruston, methinks. Thanks again for the memories.
I love the idea of the pipe being seen as a larger risk than the steam Loco!
Very interesting little engine with the flame proof modifications.
Yeah I agree, it's a lovely thing, and a little more unusual too!
Very happy to see any other railway video, and such a great video! Absolutely love these!
Me too!
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you!
The excitement I had when I saw the thumbnail, great video, love 2ft guage
Glad that you enjoyed it! We do aim to please!
@@lmm well you always do
Pleased to hear it!
I like the Ruston 44/48’s, both versions of the engine are marvelous in their own right!
They're just brilliant stereotypical industrial shunters.
Nice locomotive. Great job it did pulling the cars. Thank you
That's what we wanted! Thanks, you are best.
Glad that you approve and liked it!
Nothing wrong with that start it was perfect. You get some great piston slap on old diesel motors, especially when cold!
It's a good engine in that one
Absolutely brilliant, as always Lawrie!
Thank you very much!
Great locos these. I drove one at Amberley Chalk Pits when I was a volunteer there and the owner said basically they were designed so they could be operated by one person, from either inside or outside the cab. Great fun!
Another Ruston? Ooh!
Love these things and I love this format of video in general! Can't wait to see more!
Yeah, we try not to repeat locos, but this was a too gooder opportunity to turn down!
Really glad to hear that you're enjoying what we do, lots of exciting stuff lined up!
@@lmm
Oh, it's perfectly fine - Rustons are interesting enough that it's quite alright to show more variations, especially since this time the crank starter actually worked! And it is a great honor to have pulled a train with it for the first time in so many years!
They're really excellent, can't wait to see what you do next!
By the way, have you seen Hornby's new 00 scale Ruston 48?
Having the hand start working was pretty good. I was impressed.
I really want them to make a model of mine!
15k ! i started watching a week ago and was 13k ish! well done keep up the honest and entertaining way of showing reality !!
We've just been blown away by the resent growth.
Glad you're enjoying what we're doing!
It always surprises me how small British railcars are. In the US we have flatcars that could carry that whole train. Id be giddy as a kid to drive a locomotive that small
Havok Vladimirovich Stalinov this isn’t a full size loco.
It is a full size loco, but for narrow gauge industrial purposes. In this case, moving bombs and ammo around.
As Kris said.
It's a super little engine.
I'm hooked! keep em coming.
Great to hear, plenty more coming up!
What a delightful little locomotive! I honestly was really nervous there when you applied the breaks and nothing happened, I hope you informed the owners about the breaking issues. Very cool piece of equipment, I'm so glad you were able to give us a tour of it! I was quite shocked by the sheer difference between the crank start on this loco, and the one on the other Ruston 44/48 you attempted to start by hand. I couldn't believe it when it started right up!
It really is lovely. They've done a really cracking job with it.
I was a little concerned too, but there was never any real danger, we were out on test.
One of the owners was close by in one of the wagons, and agreed they may need adjustment! 😂
I was amazed it started too! Magnificent wasn't it!
So I'm getting a vibe that you might like Ruston's :)
Great to see these lovely little engines being restored and used.
I'd love to see the old tramway that Wantage once had brought back in some way, I believe the old engine is located at the Didcot railway museum.
I do have a soft spot for them, but really I do like any Loco.
Its a lovely railway with some glorious locomotives!
Oh that's Shannon right? Lovely thing!
@@lmm Yep Shannon was her name. To see her back in Wantage on a new set of lines would be an amazing site. Maybe one day.
20k special = Lawrie gives a mouse a fist bump with the loco.
and the way the channel is growing wont be long to wait
I get the feeling that may not go as planned. That poor mouse... LOL!
😂 😂
We know! It's really exciting!
What are you saying about my driving! 😮
😂 😂 😂
@@lmm Not about your driving... just from my experience when working with trains, Murphy's Law is ALWAYS in effect. "If it can go wrong, it probably will go wrong"... and almost always at the least convenient moment for you and others. It's just how it is! Temperamental machines, they are!
Particularly with steam locomotives!
Love the Ruston Lat or LBT in the shed in the background
LBT, from Littleton Colliery in Staffordshire
I know! Isn't it cute - hopefully going to get back and film with it.
@@lmm I hope you do, it is one of my favorite diesels ever, my favorite model as well
It's a wonderful little machine!
@@lmm Indeed it is
those straight cut gears though! loud as a banshee
It's quiter than my Loco!
Excellent video, though I am a little biased :)
Glad you approve. Surely not biased 😂
Amazing little loco, but definitely credit to its restoration team.
I'm a bit gutted that the manual engine start didn't put up much of a fight, but I guess that's what a major overhaul does.
Quality engineering!
I was surprised, I didn't think it would be that easy, I thought I'd failed, and away it went.
They've done a super good job on it - it's like new!
What a treat......awesome video
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
I love your passion for these trains.
I so want to ride a train before they are gone
They arent going anywhere :)
Thank you, the Amerton railway is going from strength to strength and well worth a visit!
Lawrie i have subbed and thumbed up every vid you have produced WHY ? well you are passionate about your hobby and you put it across to somebody like me with a cheerful smile keep them coming love the Ruston.
Thank you very much, really happy to hear that you are enjoying what we do!
Awesome job! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thank you!
Love this series! Keep it my freind, also 6k to go then you got 20k!
Thank you, glad you're enjoying it! We're really excited by the concept!
Congrads lawrie really nice video almost at 15k soon you'll be getting your silver playbutton
Struan Banks he’s no where near the play button.. the silver play button is for 100,000 subscribers
He was implying with our current growth that it was in reach.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Earnestly, and maybe it's just me and my love of "cultural exchange" (i.e. Americans going to the UK and Brits going to America) I earnestly would love to see you do some sort of video on the Maine Two Footers up in...well...up in Maine. That or just more narrow gauge railways in general. That content you put out is awesome! I can't wait to see more from you in the future, I am very glad to have subscribed!
I'm planning on being back in the states next year, so if anything could be arranged we'd be completely up for it!
I work in the old Ruston factory in Lincoln. We make much faster spinning turbines now!
Oh that's really cool, nice to think industry is still going on there!
Good job, ran it well.
It really did. They've done a magnificent job on it!
I really love narrow gauge. What magnificent railway is that?
This is the Amerton Railway, its well worth a visit!
I imagine that is very similar to the unit that got blown up when the RNAD at Bedenham had a mishap back in the '40s/'50s. Apparently my great-grandmother was on the outside toilet of her house on the far side of Fareham, some 7 or so miles away, and the explosion blew the toilet door open on her. The entire train was destroyed and the remains of the loco were thrown hundreds of metres from the site of the explosion...
I would imagine something very similar yes.
That must have been quite a bang 😂
So that's why my dynamite keeps going bang I always wondered why it was going back when I left it on top of a pile of matches that were lit I love you lorrie you're funny you're very funny your humour is just exactly what RUclips should be about in my mind Tony doesn't take it too seriously but knows how to produce good content
Thank you, glad you're enjoying my humor and the content.
Also glad to have helped you with your dynamite conundrum!
Lawrie: "All Thomas fans recognize these engines as Rusty"
Me a Thomas fan: Oh hey look ms Midlander's relative
nice little loco .. and started pretty easily
Easiest thing I've ever hand started I think!
Lovely thing!
Great film more narrow gauge please.
That we can do
@@lmm Lots please all your films are excellent
@@lmm Even my 10 year old son watches your videos.
I've given a like as usual Lawrie. I haven't had time to watch it yet, but I know it will be good....
Edit 2 hours later:
It was 👍👍🙂
I'm not a diseasel fan (coughs and sneezles spread diseasels), but this is great. Cute little machine!
Cheers Robin, glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the assumption of a like 😂
It's a super little thing!
12:06 Have you ever seen a happier little boy when it kicks over? ;)
I was thrilled 😂
Your face when it fired up. Classic..
That needs to go on a "best of" compilation video if you run out of footage to use in these troubled times
That's not a bad idea - although there would be a tonne of footage to work though 😂
Might be a long stretch for you and potentially not worth your time, but an amazing Locomotive (and quite frankly worth the trip) is the Frisco 1630 here in the “Good” Ol’ US of A. It’s one of the few surviving Frisco locomotives and one of two operational decapods in the US. Its located in the Illinois Railway Museum, the largest in the nation I believe, but if that doesn’t peak your interest, the IRM also has just recently restored a Class A (I think) Shay geared Locomotive. Either way it’s a bit of a journey so it’s your call my friend
I'm hoping to return to the US next year, and am starting to work on a list of places to visit! So thanks for the suggestion!
This channel is growing like mad, you'd almost think RUclips put one of Lawrie's videos in recommended or something....
We've no idea what happened, but we're really happy that it has! It's amazing!
Oh well now I want to own my own locomotive 🙄😂
It's actually a really pleasant thing to have done.
I'm so proud of having one.
@@lmm I want to get one myself but what would be even better would find a way to use it for revenue to pay for itself!
Cheers from rainy and windy Chicago!
Yeah, that's the dream. It rarely happens. They can help earn their keep, but mine certainly doesn't!
We love the fact that you guys are watching from all over the world!
Maybe make a behind the scenes of an lawry goes loco, and describe the process before presenting the engine.
We'll look into it - though the process isn't that exciting
I drive a Ruston 165ds at the Helston railway. We have 2 one is noiser than the other. But I love it!!
Interesting that one is noisier than the other. They're great locos!
@@lmm you can just about have a chat in one but the other one is sooo dam noisy lol. I love them great machines!!
They're super things!
Hmm , Love the simple loco , but I live Down Under , be a bit hard to come for a weekend or 2 , Keep up the good work !
It's not that much of a commute 😂
It's a great Loco, and glad you're enjoying the content!
I know of at least one person who lives in the UK and comes down under to volunteer at Puffing Billy for a couple of months of the year so it can be done. (He comes for the Summer.)
I've not been, but hear nothing but good things about the railway!
I always learned to keep my thumbs On Top of the cranking handle rather than around it because if it kicks back and the engine's big enough it'll break your thumb
To be honest on an engine that size you need to be able to properly grab the handle and pull it out or you have a 48hp egg whisk on your hands.
"you have a 48hp egg whisk on your hands." That sounds an interesting experience.
From experience with the dumper, it is not entertaining.
It was sarcasm, more like a wrist breaker if your not careful.
Sorry, I missed out the laughing face! I knew what you meant!
Cool vid
Thank you
You should always wipe the dipstick before you use it to check oil levels. This way, you can get a true idea of how much oil you have available.
Yes, this is just a walk round to demonstrate what needs to be done, the Loco had been prepped by its owner in readiness for its test train, so I knew there was oil there.
I got a small cameo :PBrilliant video as always Lawrie
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it, good to see you!
This should be fun
It really was!
A smashing video, that’s brought back some fun memories - thank you.
Occasionally in 2015-16 I drove the twin sister, RH 221625, also ex-RNAD BM, while on a long-term loan to the sadly short-lived Penrhyn Quarry Railway revival project in Gwynedd as PQR No26… 26 cemented my fondness of Rustons, and I miss it.
I was in stitches at 19:45 , because the brake on 26 worked when going forward perfectly, but hardly at all in reverse, much as you found here - how did the brake perform going forwards on 221623?
Also: You could’ve made life even easier still on yourself starting it up - the injection pump has a lever on the back you can reach your fingers around to to flick up, releasing the control rack to push even further forwards than the throttle lever allows (it drops back automatically after starting). The guys up from the Moseley Trust minding 0-4-2ST ‘Stanhope’ taught us that, and reckoned that these 48DL’s are bizarrely easier to manual start than the diddy 20DL’s. Couldn’t see them in your video, but the other quaint curiosity certainly with the engine in 26 (possibly swapped for the Lister equivalent?) was the glow plugs: they were essentially long bolts with a T-handle that you unscrew, shove the handleless end in a fire or blow-torch flame until red hot, replace swiftly but safely into the engine, and then you attempt to start the thing up as quickly as you can!
Thank you again.
I'm really glad you enjoyed it! They're great fun things to drive aren't they. Massive shame about Penrhyn, it looked like it had so much potential and character.
The brakes... Just needed adjustment full stop 😂
Oh really? That's a useful hint for the future!
We'd talked about putting in a similar heating system into my 48 when it didn't want to start.
Honestly, this is good content, now imagine driving engines like mallard or flying Scotsman! That would be amazing content!
Mallard is unlikely to run again, Scotsman may be possible one day, but I'd need to be a much bigger channel!
@Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels true true, but you are a fantastic youtuber, with superb content.
Thank you, really glad you're enjoying what we do!
@Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels np m8! Have a great day!
Hey Lawrie bro that ruston is a beautiful little engine its suits u well sir maybe u shud get another one
I wouldn't say no if the opportunity presented itself, it is a great little thing
Isn’t that what the Rusty the little diesel(Black in Railway series and orange in tv show) based on
Yes!
Your growing so fast
It's mad! We're so excited by how it's going
Ur da best from America
Well thank you!
20:30 - just about a SPAD there ;)
The brakes only exist by name ....
We avoided it! Just. I hear the thing is much improved now!
It was literally it's first day out, the second gear slip has been fixed. The brakes are spot on now.
Did you try the excellent farm shop at Amerton?
Their pies & sausages are excellent!
As is their bacon!
Not good for the volunteer's health though!
Love your work Lawrie!
I would love a video/s on how to drive a steam loco and fire t and maintain it and all that good stuff.
I can’t find all that many videos in the subject.
Also are you in to miniature railways? Like 5” gauge and all that?
We can do that, I'll put it in the to shoot list.
I've got a little 3.5 inch Rob Roy that I need to do the boiler on.
16:00 sheep is running in background
They're all around the site just chilling out.
They usually stay out of the way. Usually.
cherio pip pip mate!
i knew this train looks sort of similar but i couldn't tell why until you mentioned it looked like rusty from thomas the tank engine
Yeah, we covered another one in an earlier Lawrie Goes loco too!
👍
😁
A few days ago you were at 10k subscribers, now your at 15k, how fast is this channel growing???
Amazingly fast! We're so excited!
you wanna get yourself down to the L&B mate!!
I really really do! It's a wonderful railway!
I was the guard when you came!
It was a really good day!
Have you considered coming up to the ravenglass and eskdale railway?
I'd love to do the Ratty if they were open to the idea.
Northern Rock is a super little machine, and I followed the 'Train from Spain' saga with much interest!
She looks very like 'Moel Hebog' on the Ffestiniog Railway?
Here in the United States Ruston is what we say when we buy a British car only we say it a little differently we say rust on LOL
Yeah, I hear alot of our stuff doesn't last well with you guys.
Could you possibly go to the Golden Valley Light railway to have a look at the simplex ‘Tubby’.
We can certainly ask the question!
Nice
She sounded like Northern Rail taking on those corners.
Hahahah, it is a little tight!
a google little railway to visit
It's a fantastic little place, highly recommend visiting!
All those weights bolted right down low on the chassis would give it a very low CoG. I'll be it corners like it's on... well... rails!
It definitely felt quite purposeful.
15K Subscribers now....
It's amazing, we're so blown away!
So how does it arrest the sparks from the exhaust?
It used to have some contraption around the back too, I assume it worked in a way described above.
14,9k soon to be 15k
It's all going quite well isn't it!
Good morning
Morning to you too!
Come on little fella
Great little thing!
You should by a dennis dart or any bus and do stuff with it like jupiter
I do like the idea of a bus...
@@lmm cool
A new Video...Yeah :)
Glad you approve!
i love those Little Ruston engines =) Hope you make more videos like this… =)
Loads more videos in the pipeline!
Sound good =)
why didnt the tallylyn keep midlander like that rip midlander 1940 - 1980 you shall always live as rusty in our hearts
Coming up on 15k now.
It's growing very pleasantly!
I don't know if you care for model railways but have you seen that hornby is releasing a 00 gauge Ruston 48DS model ?
It has been released :)
I've seen it and really want them to make one of mine!
@@lmm now that would be perfect :)
Wouldn't it just 😂
Is this also similar to Midlander from the Talyllyn Railway?
Yes it is.
gotta breath a lot more than that. even now its chocked to near death
my little 2.8l v6 wouldnt even run on that amount of breathing
It has restricted intakes because it worked in an ammunition depot.
It seemed to be very happy, didn't notice any real difference between that and mine in all fairness
