The back up singers called themselves the "Blackberries", and were (from left to right) - Billie Barnum, Vanetta Fields, and Clydie King. All were very experienced backup singers who had been Ikettes and Raylette's. Steve loved the idea of having backing singers who had performed with his heroes. Venetta and Clydie also backed up many other artists of that era, so it's possible Linda Ronstadt might have been one. Steve absolutely loved and respected the "chicks" (as he called them), and they loved him back. Vanetta wrote that when she first met Steve, he got on his knee and kissed her hand. She said "he was outlandish, but we loved him!"
According to Steve's wife Jenny, around this time, Steve and Clydie were having a "thing". Steve also had an affair with PP Arnold while she sang back up for him on Tin Soldier.
PP (Pat) said Steve was the only white boy she dated who didn't try to hide it and even took her home to meet his mother - "he was that real" and a sweetheart... Sorry to gossip, but since they are all gone now (sadly), I guess it doesn't matter. RIP Steve, Clydie & Vanetta

I just heard this for the first time a couple of days ago. The lead singer and the guitar immediately made me think of Plant and Paige. This is probably the most Zeppelin-esque song I've ever heard.
It turns out Steve's band Small Faces opened for Zeppelin and the Zep stole Whole Lotta Love and the singing style from Steve.

Watching your reactions to Steve Marriot's BEST performance is pure joy to me. Jamel and friends, your appreciation for the blues and for the power and depth of his voice gives me hope that Humble Pie's music will never lose its appeal. I met him 2 nights in his hotel rooms in 1972 when he was touring the Midwest. My friend at school had been a DJ in St. Louis while in high school and had interviewed him on the air - LIVE. My friend insisted that three of us go see Humble Pie's concerts during that week - a short drive from our university to Louisville, Cincinatti and St. Louis. Steve Marriott was as engaging in person as he was mesmerizing on stage. Looking back over these 50 years and hearing his voice, I realize that I have always measured every blues musician against Marriott. Very few musicians have ever been his equal in terms of guitar magic, harmonica finesse, and his raw and emotional voice. You noticed it too. It is my hope that you will continue to remember his music and come back to it again time after time.

Jerry Shirley (drummer) tells a funny story about how when they played this show in SanAntonio, Steve (who hadn't slept in days) passed out in the hotel bar and had to be carried up to his room. Come show time - no Steve, so they broke down his door and he was still totally passed out. Jerry had to pick him up and throw him in the shower to wake him up, and Steve went on stage about 1/2 hr later and absolutely KILLED. Jerry said Steve was a total showman who ALWAYS gave 100%, even when he wasn't feeling up to it. - Bless him. Wish I could have seen them live...

When you listen to the blues If you don’t listen and watch it live There’s no comparison because when you watch people perform live it just makes you feel the music that much more I got hooked on the blues when I was 14 years old and now I’m 53 years young and I love the blues probably more now than I ever have I was at a party in 1984 and someone put a Muddy Waters Album on and the rest is history I freaking love the blues It just gets in your soul and I can’t get enough I love all blues music and it doesn’t matter if it’s Muddy Waters,BB King,Albert King or SRV The blues is for every race of people and I love all kinds of music from Rockin roll to Rap,blues, country and gospel it doesn’t matter to me I just love music and to see it live is a whole different experience I was in Daytona Beach in 1987 and watched SRV and he blew my mind This man gave everything he had every time he walked on stage and to me he’s the best guitar player that has ever played one When you have BB King and Eric Clapton tell you that SRV was so special and that it will be a long time before you see anyone that plays like SRV To hear that from those to great musicians What else can you say You don’t have to say anything Just sit back and enjoy and take it all in I always think of all the great music we missed out on when the good lord said it was time for SRV to say goodbye To one of the very best to ever do We love ya SRV and man I sure do miss you so much Rest In Peace to a legend

As much as you love Steve Marriott, WHY haven't you done more reactions besides Black Coffee & 30 Days in the Hole (although both are classics)???? You have barely scratched the surface of his huge inventory of brilliant performances. Please try something you haven't heard yet. My recommendations: "I Don't Need Not Dr" ( from live at Fillmore) or the totally soulful "I Wonder" from album Smokin.
Also, Steve's first band Small Faces was a very hot little band, way ahead of it's time in 1965-68. You did get blown away with Small Faces version of "You Need Lovin" - which Led Zeppelin covered as "Whole Lotta Love". I recommend you try :
"Tin Soldier" their most popular song - there is a video from French TV that must not get blocked as MANY other reactors have played it. I'm sure you will love PP Arnold on back up. She's a real beauty... or...
"All or Nothing" Kind of Steve's theme song for his life... SF's first #1 hit.
I doubt any of these songs will get blocked as long as you stay away from the "Beat Club" videos. Please play more Marriott

1:64 A student told their singing Teacher, "I can't sing. guess I don't have the talent."
The teacher responded, "Nonsense! Just pick a song that you really feel."

Wait till you hear the small faces. Steve Marriott is the best. Real deal. And you’re spot on about seeing stuff live catching a new vibe from the “essence of performance” thumbs up.

Glad you guys enjoyed that. You should check out The Small Faces track, You Need Lovin'.
I had the immense pleasure of meeting Steve in 1987 just after my 19th birthday. It was waiting for a Steve Marriott & The Packet of 3 gig, what a gentleman he was. I met him a few more times after that and shared a few joints. He was cruelly taken from us far too soon. R.I.P Stevie Marriott, the world's most soulful white dude.
