    In my opinion, an astounding sound coming from these 1st order driven Satori drivers! Hard to believe' such a well tempered, transparent midrange being delivered by a 6,5" driver running through a single 1.2 mH inductor! Kudos to Troels!
    Recorded on a Samsung Galaxy S7, no less.

    Hey thanks for the comments regarding comparisons between this speaker to your other ones. Would you say the mw16p is inferior in mid duty (say 300hz-2.5/3khz) to a scanspeak (i.e. 18w revelator or even the discovery)? I've heard revelators and illuminators and really like them but your comments seem to suggest that the mw16p doesn't play on that level is that true :(?

    • @Lasse3
      @Lasse3  3 года назад +1

      Mw16p is only filtered by a single 1,2 mH inductor. No notch - no resistors, no correction of any kind.
      And it sounds completely free of any coloration, most transparent midrange I've ever heard.
      It's a remarkable driver. Only driver that could be tamed by a single inductor leaving you with a flat response.
      Scanspeak driver's requires more corrections in crossover.
      All I'm saying is, the SBA761 has a small membrane area, I prefer larger loudspeakers, delivering a more weighty believable presentation.

    • @skandiaart
      @skandiaart 3 года назад

      @@Lasse3 thanks 🙏 for the response, really valuable. As I plan to use the mw16p as a mid only I think that would fix the cone area problem as I plan to use it with 2 12inch woofers and really prefer 1st order filters. Btw keep posting these videos, really fun to watch and nice to read your insides on the speakers!

    • @Lasse3
      @Lasse3  3 года назад +1

      @@skandiaart well, membrane area won't be an issue for you then, but yeah mv16p is an incredible broadbanded driver, perfect for mid-range duties,
      But it cannot be used for 2way, that would be a very lean bright sounding speaker😉
      Unlike the revelator and illumanitor 6,5 inch-ish drivers that actually has some Bass performance well worthy of 2way implementation, the mv16p exhibit more of a full- range behaviour and is perfect for 3way or 2,5way like Troels has done.
      I own the Revelator 6,5 inch sliced paper driver, used it in a 2way during the last 15 years, this driver is not good above 2khz, it behaves like a deep Bass driver, extraordinary weight in the lowest octave, but poor performance in the upper midrange.
      But the fact that it can output this otherworldly bass, and at the same time work in a 2way system (using 3rd order filter) makes it a force to be reckoned with.
      Best 6+1 2way performance ever.

    2,5 way is a 2 way speakers reinforced on bass, even in your video you can hear the emphasis on the midbass zone, about 200-700 Hz. This makes the male vocals heavier, darker and too wet.

    • @Lasse3
      @Lasse3  4 года назад +2

      Hmm, this speaker is actually ruler flat from 200 hz all the way up till 2khz.. Check the link in the description, actual measurements provided.
      Only non-linearity present is the slight 4 dB dip around 5khz, all-in-all leaving this speaker boasting an impressive smooth +-2dB tolerance, without any nasty spikes..
      What you're hearing might be a combination of acoustics + bad microphone in my smartphone😅
      Truth be told, the speakers are extremely poorly positioned in a rectangular room, with one speaker in the corner..!
      Also this is a special tape-rip, 96/24, what you're hearing is not a soundfile you can purchase, it's a very warm and lush sounding track, I prefer it to the official digital release, sounds much more grandiose!

    Jut like you posted, I also like drivers that can be used with minimum crossover parts, and yes seeing scanspeak driver frequency responses, I have always seen scanspeak based kit have many parts in crossovers, but as you said discovery-861 is far superior than sba-761 that is all that is needed. Hmmm me and my father both prefers the Disc861.
      Vastly larger membrane area and 92 dB sensitivity, it will rock your world 😁 the music is alive with this speaker, and so is your foot.
      With the SBA761 it's more about finesse and clarity, but it's too analytical for digital listening. With a warm pick-up and vinyl playback it comes together alright.

    Hello, I'm interested in Troels 3WC, and confused between different drivers. I usually listen to classical music and need clear mids accompanied by immediate and solid bass. Which one of the Troels designs, do you think would better suit. Speaker efficiency plays a role too, as i will be connecting them to 20wpc MF A1.

    • @Lasse3
      @Lasse3  3 года назад +4

      If you're gonna run 20 wpc, go for the latest design by Troels, Discovery861.
      I own them too, they're the best I've ever heard, potent low Bass, mid-range driver in sealed box, for the most transparent mid possible, every discipline executed at levels beyond sba761 capabilities, and add 92 dB sensitivity to that!!
      I use the discovery 861 with 32 wpc primaluna, and I barely have to touch the volume nob!
      The 3WC is 88 dB sensitivity, not gonna work well with 20 wpc. The 3WC had port-tuning at 30 hz, where the Discovery 861 have at 35 hz, so deep bass goes slightly in favor of 3WC.
      After I got the Discovery861 I'm seriously considering buying 300B SET amp.

      That's easy, the Ekta Mkii, is superior, the illuminator drivers are not just pretty, they are clearly a step up, in every sonic regard.

      Yep they're great, true reference quality. I haven't build these myself, they are the ACTUAL speakers showcased on Troels website😅
      I couldn't build a box, even if my life depended upon it😆
      So yep port is a gigantic 1500 cm3 downfiring pipe, as seen on Troels's website, impressive low notes!
      But if you're wondering about building the SBA761, you should build the Discovery 871 instead, they're much better! And much cheaper to build.
      I own both, it's a 'no contest' situation.
      The discovery871 is perhaps too large for your wife, but if you can get the green light, go for it! I have never heard better speakers!!!

      @@Lasse3 Thanks! So you have both speakers now? Impressive that the discovery serie outperforms the SBA 761 with Satori drivers (that nomally should compare to the more expensive Relevator/Illuminator drivers).
      Did you had a chance to listen to the Ekta mk2?

    • @Lasse3
      @Lasse3  3 года назад +4

      @@BluemagicsWorld
      Yep I own both the disc861 and the Sba761, both being the actual speakers showcased at Troels website.
      The ekta mkii uses the exact same Tweeter as the Disc861, I'm pointing this out, just to show that the discovery drivers are not inferior drivers, and can be used right next to an illuminator driver.
      it seems people think less of them just because of the smaller price.
      Notice what troels wrote in his disc861 article, about the 6" bass-midrange
      " I want to start out with the most important driver here, the 18W/8434G00, on the given baffle.
      Now, not since the Ellipticor 18WE have I seen anything like it. Smooth like a baby's bottom.
      Not the slightest hint of any disturbance around 800-1200 Hz, rubber surround resonances, which is all too common.
      Extended range up to 7 kHz! And a smooth roll-off."
      These drivers are serious contenders, Troels had included the Discovery861, under his "My reference" page, not many speakers go on that list. They were removed from the list after I purchased them, he had decided not to sell them initially, but I asked so nicely.. 🤣
      The etka mkii doesn't even have 50% of the cm2 membrane area of the discovery861, this dramatically impacts performance.
      Ekta mkii only have 87 dB sensitivity,
      The disc861 have 92 dB, that's nearly a two-fold increase in sensitivity, and if you ever listened to high sensitivity, you realize which benefits goes along with it, much more realistic dynamics and transient response, also the benefits of 1st order filters, again increased dynamics / transient willingness.
      I would not trade my disc861 for the Ekta mk2 not even close!!
      I haven't heard them, I'm sure they sound wonderful, but they can't deliver the physics of a Drum kit with such a small membrane area, the discovery slams and has extremely potent Bass! Very very heavy cabinets!
      They play everything perfectly, right from Choral works, to Rock, jazz, you name it.
      Very large speakers and they deliver a very large sound.
      In comparison, the sba761 sounds small, and they are small! I'm already attempting to sell them..😎
      The combined membrane area of the disc861 is so large, that you'd had to throw in an additional 6" satori MWP16 into the SBA761 (making it SBA7661) to achieve the same membrane area of the disc 861...
      Instruments like a kick Drum, double Bass or organ pipes are gigantic, if you want to emulate them truthfully, you can't just hope a small 5" driver will pull it off, it's physically impossible, regardless of how shiny and costly it is.
      With the Disc861 we're embarking on territory where it begins to appear credible, the physicality.
      Though I would much rather have an even larger more sensitive Troels design, but I also have a wife - so...

    • @Lasse3
      @Lasse3  4 года назад +4

      Well the 90 dB sensitivy, and the fact that they measure very linear, with the 10-20khz being flat with the Bass and Mid, really delivers very open sound, without any hint of brightness. (No bbc dip here, nor spikes or bumps elevated above Bass/mid)
      The 6" playing such a great deal of the entire spectrum, only filtered by a single 1,2 mh coil makes it a very coherent sounding speaker, where instruments and vocals sounds "whole" and they are extremely dynamic, which also means they will be able to create those nice transients at lower volumes.
      Having the the 6" mingle so much with the treble, makes percussion and hi- hats sound like they actually have some weight, and not just being delivered by a tiny 1"
      I have done a great deal of work with scanspeak drivers, and I will stick my neck out and say these drivers performs nearly as well as scanspeak.
      If your budget allows it, go for the Ekta mkII.
      What you get with the SBA761 is a very high-end sound for little money. The very small cross-over makes it possible to go for the expensive capacitors and coils without breaking the bank!
      And trust me! an expensive tweeter coupled with an inexpensive cap, is worth far less than a cheap tweeter with an expensive cap.
      And if you're a 1st order crossover purist, this is definately the one for you!
      I enjoy speakers with 2nd/3rd order filters too, sounds perhaps abit more civilized. But this speaker is very "alive" compared to that (in a good way)
      I was hesitant to begin with, since I have little faith in a 6" only couple with a single coil. But I have nearly blind faith in Troels, and for good reasons it turned out.

      @@Lasse3 I have the smaller two top drivers in my Meniscus Kairos .Which is very good and sounds very refined but lacking in dynamics and vibrancy .I guess due to the size of the driver itself but also the more complex crossover design takes away too much sensitivity.I always felt that a first order crossover would give a more dynamic sound.

    • @Lasse3
      @Lasse3  4 года назад +3

      @Thomo thomo
      The 6" can't handle the lower octave all by itself, that would result in a far too bright/thin sound, not enough weight in the bottom to produce credible low end warmth. This is more of a full-tone driver, it's not a woofer, and will not be able to behave like a woofer, trees never grows into the sky!
      Even with this SBA761 2½-way, with the 7" Woofer at the bottom, i'm not even getting the same amount of true bottom that i get from my scanspeak Revelator 2way, but that Revelator speaker cost a fortune compared to this speaker, with 3rd order filters, a single revelator silk-dome tweeter cost more than 2x Satori tweeter. When you've first gotten used to the 'true bottom' anything less than that, will seem cold and thin.
      I'm not talking the worthless bass comming from some cheap subwoofer that can shake the room, i'm talking the raw authentic bass delivered by a bowed double bass or cello, or the bass from horns, when you have something like Scanspeak revelator 6,5" sliced paper cone, that true bass becomes very warm and wholesome and powerful in a way that just seems so true, and it just makes the entire difference.
      Phase response is far superior with a 1St order, you get that willingness, eg: kick drums that actually kicks. Also the fact that the drivers themself have a much larger shared part of the frequency spectrum, means they are playing tandem for a much larger part, tandem has a much higher BL force factor, for obvious reasons.
      Listening to the stepped baffle with tweeter placed correctly in same plane as bass/mid has been an epiphany. For the first time, all guitar solos and lead vocals stays back correctly inside the soundstage. I really sense that this is the result of having the tweeter those 2 cm further back.

      They have done exactly like Troels, 1St order for woofer, higher order for Tweeter, this would normally mean drivers being out of phase, but just like Troels they have phase alignment down thanks to the baffle tilt, again just like Troels.
      I'm not proposing it's a knock-off, I just found it cool how they've used basically the same methods :)
      I personally dislike tilt, the bottom part of the woofer is closer to your ears, than the upper part..
      I have with isoacoustics Aperta stands meticulously experimented with tilting, with adjustable degrees of angle, and my conclusion was, no tilt is best, actually having tweeter physically at the correct height is far superior, playing horizontally parallel with floor and ceiling.
      But thats only my opinion, extremely expensive flagship speakers has been seen with tilted baffles.

    Very impressive. I went to their website but I still don't understand what we buy. There is a list price for all components except the cabinets. Are these included in the package and price? or we have to build them ourselves?

    • @oscarjung5405
      @oscarjung5405 4 года назад

      I think they are not included. there is a PDF on each page at Troels Graversens page with items for each speaker. You have to do the woodwork.

    • @Lasse3
      @Lasse3  3 года назад +1

      Cabinets are not sold, there is schematics showing exact work-drawings for cabinet assembly.
      But you will have to either find a Carpenter and pay him for the job, or do it yourself. And trust me, having these assembled cost a fortune, there is not a single screw or bolt, all plywood sheets are glued together. Using techniques that you hardly could expect a Carpenter to be familiar with..

    Need you help to recommend a tube amp. My main audiophile stuff is 20ish years old and like to try tubes for fun. My main solid state is ati amp ead pre, gumby dac, schiit jutenheim, thiel and klipsch speakers. headphones hd650, focal elear, monolith1060. I have no tube stuff. Please recommend a tube amp. Uncertain if a $238 darkvoice or $300 littledot m3 would be a quick victim to upgrade itis. Absolute max budget $2k, but prefer under 1k since ive never heard tubes except on zeos site.

    • @file1man

      The $710 xduoo tube amp looked promising until I saw zeos's video with no gain control and 212 degrees

    • @Lasse3
      @Lasse3  3 года назад

      If you have HD650 go with Darkvoice, the Darkvoice is OTL topology (Output transformerless) meaning it won't transform output impedance to 4 or 8 ohm, it can therefore only work with high impedance loads, but in return it scales exponentially with high impedance loads, and HD650 is 300-600 ohm (very high impedance)
      I have the Darkvoice/Hd600 combo, it's pure gold, same applies for hd650!
      Having tube amp makes best sense if you are running OTL and have high impedance drivers! 😁
      The darkvoice is cheap, but you will have to spend some money rolling tubes, until you find the ones with golden sound!
      If you have questions, just ask mate 😁

      These loudspeakers needs a semi- large room, with good distance from speaker to the back-wall. Eg 40-50 cm
      Currently I live in a smaller apartment, than what's shown on the video, and the speakers aren't able to 'breathe' experiencing quite a bass -hump extending into the 200hz region.
      These speakers are not dark, but they will get dark if pushed into a wall or corner. Much more so, than if you buy a pair of B&W's or other commercial speakers.. My experience with commercial speakers is actually how they are simply too thin, cold and 'analytical' and they really need help from the back-wall to warm up the instruments and vocals.
      The SBA761 has the correct amount of upper bass and lower midrange, making instruments and vocals sound large and full, even when the speakers are positioned quite far from the wall.

      @@Lasse3 Awesome, thanks for the reply. My room is not very large but I can position them about 1m from the back wall. I've also invested in acoustic treatment and bass traps which helps a lot. I like their size, quite easy to place compared to other larger floorstanders.

    This or discovery 861?

    • @Lasse3
      @Lasse3  3 года назад +1

      I also own discovery 861, just purchased them from Troels a month ago.
      The 861 is far better in terms of low end extension, they are extremely dynamic, can be pushed incredibly loud, they have a very grandiose sound presentation, transient willing beyond comprehension, far better than SBA761.
      Troels had already put the discovery861 under his "My reference" page, he was abit reluctant about selling them, and I can see why.
      The very best loudspeaker I've ever heard is clearly the Discovery 861, they can play a rock concert at realistic sound pressure from a single 32 watts per channel EL34 tube amp...!
      They are so revealing, I've never been able to listen so far into recordings before either! Not a bright speaker, nor dark, well-tempered to perfection!
      But they're a large floorstander, quite large infact, the SBA761 looks very small when right next to eachother.
      So the SBA761 can fit into a small living room, without looking too intrusive.
      I will soon upload a video with Discovery 861, give me a month or so 😊

      @@vdeki I promise you, it's the right choice! Discovery861 is far superior, to sba761!!! Horns and trumpets are much more expansive and rich on the scanspeak,
      Miles Davis - Kind of blue sounds better on Discovery 861.
      This is not because the SBA761 is bad, it's an insanely good loudspeaker!! But the Discovery861 is simply a phenomena!! Can't be beat!
      The new 861 has such an insane Bass slam, clearly extending deeper, and much more dry and articulate, I've never heard drums like this before, such a realistic and physical experience!
      The sba, just don't have the membrane area, the sensitivity, nor the internal cabinet liters to achieve this.
      The Satori drivers are very small! The so-called "7 inch" MWP19 Satori, is nearly smaller than the 6 inch Discovery driver!
      In turn, the 8inch discovery is a very very large 8" !!
      You get a vastly larger combined membrane area with the discovery861.
      Increase in Membrane area similiar to that of adding an entire additional 6" driver to the SBA761.
      The Satori drivers are not at all superior to the Scanspeak drivers, not in any category!
      Only in the looks department perhaps 😉
      I might do a recording today. Or atleast sometime soon. I too have a KT88 Gold Lion tube amp 32 watts, real British Mullard CV4024 and CV4003 (military NOS)
      This Pentode mode push pull Primaluna can drive the 92 dB sensitive Discovery to thunderous sound pressures in a large living room!
      And the best thing is, the discovery sounds best from 8 ohms tabs! The SBA761 in turn only sounded good from 4 ohm tabs!
      (Being able to run the amp from 8 ohm tabs means the power supply is being spared of delivering excessive high currents) which is ideal working conditions! Much smoother.
      I just sold the SBA761, telling you this should prove which is the better speaker😂
      I do not believe this is my subjective opinion, I honestly doubt that anyone would prefer the sound of the SBA. It sounds like a much smaller speaker in direct comparison, and IT IS!
      When it comes to ability to resolve and finesse, you have to remember, the SBA761 midrange is in a ported cabinet (with acoustilux in the port)
      The Discovery has its midrange driver in a true sealed cabinet, this is very advantageous! Furthers Attack and decay precision, and kills midbass bloom.
      Clearly the discovery861 is one of Troels most impressive work! The return of investment is mind boggling.
      The money you save can be used to buy the finest caps, seriously go for atleast Alumen Z-caps, and also throw in some Mundorf Mcap Supreme SilverGoldOil 1200 VDC, into that tube amp😉

      You can easily tell, just by eye - that membrane area is vastly increased, look at those 8 inches! They can play some actual believable bass, and I mean for classical, jazz - you name it!
      Bass is not something exclusive to modern synthetic music, you would be surprised how deep and powerful the bass is from some of the larger actual acoustic instruments.
