@@isabelnecessary5915 "Pinko" was a slang term for communist sympathizers during the Red Scare, while the Pinkertons were a private policing and detective company who famously did a lot of strikebreaking and union-busting around the same time period
i have no idea if it's intentional but dom's bit about just wanting to put the pink panther theme into every single movie to get himself into as many as possible, even if it unravelled by the end, was an absolutely phenomenal play
Just wanted to share that, after over 2 years of watching people enjoy board games every week (except when Jon unravels as usual), I've finally bought my first proper board game! (Single player, because I unfortunately don't really have friends with the same interests.) Hope to find time to play it real soon. Thanks to the NRB crew for getting me into board games!
That's awesome! Single player games are great! That said, have you tried showing your friends some silly party games? They can be a great gateway to heavier stuff.
Glad you’re getting into the solo gaming. After I finished college and moved back home, I didn’t have anyone to play with either. It’s been a little over a year now and I finally found a gaming group but I’m still deeply in love with solo gaming.
This whole session had me replaying the line, "I'm very uncomfortable with the energy we have created in the studio today." multiple times in the best way lol, the history and film nerd in me enjoyed this a lot :D
Knew the teams pretty early on and it was still pretty intense. Feel sorry for the rising star - their win condition seems quite difficult to achieve. Just getting to 7 movies seems like a minor win in itself.
I think the rising star's win condition should be to be in a certain number of movies, maybe 5 movies or something. Because it really does seem impossible to get to 7 movies AND tie.
@@curvedlines I think the reason for the tie requirement is so they don't immediately come out as their role, but yeah, it seems like that overcorrects a bunch
I think it's a way to try and balance the game without needing a storyteller/DM/GM who is basically trying to ensure that it gets to the final round. My initial thought on a ruling would be - the rising star wins with the winning team if it gets to best of 7 and doesn't get found out. The rising star alone wins if it's a tie. Keeps an incentive to tie it all along, helps the Communist team for the first few rounds, and incentivises them helping them still in the last round, but not too much. But that's off one playthrough I've watched. Maybe it's more balanced over multiple games.
Nice play through. I like the addition of roles to the Secret Hitler formula. I'm not sure about the dice though. It prevents someone from being iced out in theory, but does mean people were spending their whole turn just trying to get in.
Hey Adam, i think that in the explation of the rules, you missed that, after adding on card from the central deck, you shuffle, and take one card out of the cards that make the movie, so that makes it a little even harder to predict anything for the players.
The mechanic looks very interesting. Reminds me of this "steampunk exploring/colonizing Mars" game I played a couple years ago. There were 9 different roles (each with a special effect) and you executed in descending order. The goal was to get your Explorers/Colonists/Soldiers on-board a rocket; get it launched before anyone else, and end up the one with the most Territories Conquered/Colonists Settled. You could get bonus points for discovering Resources & Artifacts. Very Fun!
I'd like to see this game again, but do a mini game where you have to roll for success or failure on each persons ideas lol. I really LOVE you guys. You brighten us all up. Except you, Dom, you terrify me lol.
So glad my favorite board game channel gets to make play-throughs of games with active Kickstarter campaigns. None of the typical reviews can beat an actual NRB play-through for me
This was a great game! More options than in more basic find-the-baddies games, fun theme, and of course the best possible people to introduce it! If anyone's really into this historical period, this game reminded me of a really good text-based game (so "choose your own adventure" essentially) called Hollywood Visionary that's on Choice of Games. I just used the word "game(s)" a whole lot in one paragraph...
May I suggest the introduction of VAR into Board Game Club? I think I spotted an error in play. "Why do you wanna be in the movie when you could be in the producer." I'm sure I spotted a joke off the day here that went unnoticed by the referee. I think play should be called back and it should be retrospectively awarded. 😂
The last round was one of the most intense rounds for any social deduction game I have ever seen. It could have gone to literally any side and it came down to a few dice rolls and randomly drawn cards. Kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.
I want Laurie to know his gaffer tape pun at the beginning was not missed. Sully was preoccupied with preparing his actor personna, but I was paying attention
This seems like a really good adaption of the ‘take people on missions, try to succeed the missions’ type games. Though I almost feel like the good/bad guy dynamic wasn’t necessary. I think it would still work as a straight 3v3, but with no-one knowing who’s on their side.
Have you guys played KeyForge on the channel yet? I guess technically a tabletop game rather than a board game, but it would be cool to see two of you have a go at it or even have a bit of a tournament together? Love the channel! 👍🏻
I was just thinking the other day that there should be more examples of hidden role games where the hidden party are the good guys, nice to see an example of that!

Greatest line in the history of board game club.

I must have missed it. What is the timestamp?

That "proper-tea" joke didn't get the reaction it deserved. That was top tier commu-dey Sullivan.
Joke of the day for certain.
Right! I immediately messaged my friends the joke after he said it 😂
Adam proving his patronism by singing “Oh America” to the tune of the Canadian national anthem is so funny to me.
"Because proper tea is theft" - I legit lol'd at that one. How did that not get the joke of the day?
Easily the best line of the episode
The pedant in me wants to say it's because Marx didn't say that, it was Proudhon XD
@Hawkeye26 except...... They _had_ a Joke of the Day. It just wasn't the one(s) everyone wanted
because today ALL JOKES are joke of the day, comrade.
In Soviet Russia, day jokes you
"Pinko Panther" and "Pinkerton Panther" were two phenomenal jokes from Dom and Laurie that went wholly unnoticed by everyone else.
any chance you could explain it to me? dont get it haha

The concept of this game is so cool. It’s like Secret Hilter and Citadels had a baby

Welcome to the club, starts buying racks now 😄.
A group full of trained actors playing a period game. This should be good
Watching the start with Adam explaining the game and all I could think was "God Dom would be perfect for a game like this" THEN BOOM there he is
Thanks Dom. I now have the urge to watch 'Everything sounds better with the Pink Panther theme' edits of various popular film trailers

It’s a crime that “if it ain’t Brooke don’t fix it” didn’t get Joke of the Day.
No disrespect to the main trio or to Her Grace Brooke, but any video with Rosie and Dom are instant classics

I’d simply change it so that they also win with the winning team but it’s not as satisfying as the solo win.
My idea was when the game ends, if they can find who the winners are the rising star wins
Ok, but that "proper tea is theft" joke was actually great.
Laurie's "Comrade and Dom-rade" joke flew by them too quick... I literally laughed out lout on that!
a social deduction game with a film industry theme? - yes please 😍

I knew Sully was good, but that Jimmy Stewart is chef's kiss good. Top tier quality content as always from the folks at NRB.
