BLACK BACKGROUND BEHIND FOLDER ICONS WINDOWS 10 | FIXED // When you open up File Explorer in Windows and find a black square behind the folder icon, that means there's something wrong with this particular folder.
It probably missing some files or some files got corrupt thus making the folder icon appear incorrectly.
There are few ways of getting rid off of this issue. Here I will show you the easiest and quickest way to do it.
There are a few simple steps:
1. Right-click on the affected folder
2. Choose Properties
3. Go to the Customize tab
4. Left-click Change icon
5. Choose the icon with the yellow folder
6. Click OK→Apply→OK
That's it! It's done like this pretty simple. Using this method you can also choose different icons available to better distinguish different folders e.g. Check Mark icon for finished projects etc.

The Microsoft community has already answered this question: they just forgot to bring the RGB color palette back. To correct this, indeed, you need to correct this oversight in RegEdit. But this is not permanent, because after the next update, the black background may return back. In addition, it can affect the style settings, for example, if you change the white design to black. Sigh, 2 years later and still an issue! Thanks for the video, I was hoping that Microsoft had addressed this by now, but still getting
the odd black box now and again - ugly, unprofessional and undermines confidence, especially if there's still no fix likely. I did find
the same 'temporary' fix myself, but found you don't even need to reselect an icon, just click on the 'customise' tab, then OK, ta-daa!

I know, have you tried Linux Mint instead? It's quite similar to Windows if you're doing regular task and don't need any specific software only available on Windows. Hi, if it's an icon for an actual program not a folder then it's a bit different. But you can still change it, just go to properties > shortcut > change icon. Hope this will help!

It doesn't work for me with WIN 11. Instead of choosing new icon I tried to use the "restore default" button, and that thing worked for me. So thanks for the hint.

This fix didn't work for me but a disc clean up which included deleting folder icons (that would be subsequently re-built ) did.

This was happening to me when i moved lots of files. To new hard drive i thought it was bug virus 😢so deleted all my files cause it had missing files and videos wouldnt work 😢 didnt know its simple like this 😮🎉
