On May 9th every year, Russians celebrate Victory Day (День Победы). This is a day to commemorate the Nazi surrender in 1945. Parades, music and fireworks highlight the celebration.
"The Sacred War" is undoubtedly the song most closely associated with the terrible struggle that the Russians endured during the war. A.V. Alexandrov wrote this music on 22 June 1941, the day the Nazis invaded Russia. The words are a war cry, and it is said that this song was one of the influences which gave Russia the courage to defend itself.
However in this stark and raw first performance you can hear the terror in the tiny silences (tacets) after the abrupt line-endings, and the agony and bravery in the roar of the choir when they sing those very modern, harsh and high chords. When you hear the roar of battle in street riots it’s a mainly deep sound - but these chords are almost a scream, like the visual ones in Guernica - Picasso’s picture of villagers being burnt to death in battle.
This piece has been recorded by the Ensemble many times since, and is still performed today - but there will never be a performance like this again.

Первой песней, написанной в годы Великой Отечественной войны, была «Священная война». Эта патриотическая композиция стала настоящим гимном советского народа. Уже 24 июня 1941 года в газетах «Красная звезда» и «Известия» было опубликовано стихотворение Василия Лебедева-Кумача «Священная война». Перед роковым сообщением о нападении Германии на СССР поэт просматривал кинохроники бомбардировок европейских городов, и, потрясенный увиденным, он написал стих. Прочитав в газете проникновенные строки, композитор Александр Васильевич Александров сочинил к ним музыку. И уже на третий день войны перед отправляющимися на фронт солдатами, на площади Белорусского вокзала, состоялась премьера «Священной войны» в исполнении Ансамбля песни и пляски Красной Армии под руководством Александрова. Отсюда, за считанные дни, зовущая к подвигам песня распространилась по всему Союзу.

Great to see A.V. conducting a performance almost as raw and terrifying as the first 1941 recording. How modern it must have sounded!
Also very interesting to compare A.V.'s gentle conducting technique with his son Boris's very fast baton-flicks - yet both great conductors. Thank you for this.

@@ryanbraud2813 It is on track 2 of Letters From the Front 003, a limited issue cd made in Israel. It has an unusual triangular folded paper cover. That is where I heard it. No doubt it is available elsewhere.

В той части "вечного боя" наши деды победили. А мы Победу не удержали. Война идет еще жестче за наше сознание, за саму душу. И кто из нас побежден, даже не понимают, что она идет. В более хитрой изощренной форме, более жестоко, скрыто. С малыми детьми воюют руками их родителей. Как и обещали в "Плане Далласа", так и сделали - подменили наши ценности на фальшивые, разрушают нашу культуру, наши корни.

The conductor in the video is conducting an entirely different song and it throws me off so badly. I'm a musician and every time I see a conductor in a video, my eyes go there lol. I love this song though. Thanks for posting this version.

This recording was made only a week after German invasion.
Not actually.In the beginning you can see Roman number 25 being raised, which means year 25 since October revolution,so it's from 1942.

The song was composed 2 days after the German invasion
According to a Soviet record database which I've seen somewhere in the net the first recording is dated 28 June and it sounds exactly the same. The soundtrack of this film is probably dubbed.
@@jarianttila7860 The lyrics were published June 24th, Alexandrov was so inspired after reading them he both wrote the music and started the rehearsal the same day, on 26th it was performed for the first time on the Belorussian rail station to the soldiers sent to the front (this event even has it's own memorial plate there), 2 days later the notes were published hence the date you've seen.
