What INCREDIBLE memories this brings back!! As a life-long Maryland Terps fan--(going back to the days of Tom McMillen and Lenny Elmore)--there was simply nothing like ACC hoops in the 70's. EVERY game was a war!! So many unforgettable players--David Thompson, Phil Ford, John Lucas, "Tree" Rollins, Wally Walker, Skip Brown...I can go on and on!! EVERY team it seemed was top-20 caliber or better. Younger fans don't realize Duke was a last place team for several years in the early-mid 70's and they would have been in the top 3 of virtually ANY other league--that's how powerful the ACC was back then!! I think that's why ACC teams in those years generally (except for NC State in 74 and Duke's Final-4 team in 78) didn't fare as well in the NCAA Tournament. Winning the ACC was in many ways a BIGGER accomplishment, and the NCAA's were almost a letdown. Will never forget that time--and this classic jingle brings it back to life!!

I may have been born in 1981 in the Washington DC area when it was still a part of the traditional ACC footprint and following ACC Basketball when I was a kid in the mid to late 80's watching the games on WJLA and WDCA, I never knew that Duke was not as good as they would become under Coach K, but I wish I could hop into a time machine and experience ACC Basketball during the 70's especially the famous 1974 ACC tournament championship game, which was to become the final ACC tournament where only the tournament champion went to the NCAA tournament and the game between Maryland and NC State was a classic throughout and in my opinion one of the great college basketball games of all time. I could only imagine how a best of seven game series would have turned out between State and Maryland cause both teams should have been in the 1974 NCAA tournament. I most definitely would have seen the "Sail with the pilot" commercial during the telecasts.

Boy that brings back memories of ACC basketball games on WFMY when the ACC was made up of Wake Forest, N.C. State, Duke, Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Clemson and the tournament was always in Greensboro.

I don't remember this exact Pilot Life video, but there's no way you could escape them--not if you watched ACC basketball way back in the day. Thanks for posting this; great memories of some classic TV commercials!

I miss those Saturdays. Knew all the teams, all the coaches, and all the significant players, Thacker / Packer and Bones. Dean vs Stormin' Norman, Dean vs Lefty, Dean vs Holland.

I fell in love with College basketball back then. The ACC was so big. It preempted Dallas and Dynasty.

I remember Holly Farms commercials by Dinah Shore and Real estate commercials by Fonville Morrissey. Most of the players from ‘77 forward I recall. Didn’t miss many games.

I remember this commercial--a true part of Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons when some of the best ACC teams ever clashed in some of the best ACC games ever played. State, UNC, Maryland were ranked in the top 5 almost all season long in '74.

My dad was able to get some nosebleed tickets at Greensboro for the NCSU vs Maryland ACC tournament championship game. I was 8 years old and didn't learn til later how lucky we were.... to find enough gas to even make it back home. Every filling station had their hoses slung over their pumps 🥺
But as elated as we were about State's 103-100 double-overtime win we could have probably lifted up that old Kingswood Estate station wagon and carried it!
Second greatest college game I've ever seen, bested only by Laettner's last second basket over that little bluegrass team!!
      MVP Burleson 38 points
      David _"Skywalker"_ Thompson 29 points

Up until that tournament I didn't like Md or Lefty, but I've never seen a team better prepared than MD in that tournament. Lefty and that team won my undying respect for ever the way they played the whole tournament. I think most people who remember the epic clash between NCSU and MD would say it was the greatest college game ever played. The the Duke KY game had a more dramatic ending, but as for the game as a whole I have to go with State MD. Thanks for sharing the memories. You saw a great piece of basketball history.@@donarthiazi2443

I remember watching Maryland basketball games on television during the 1970s, when the Terrapins played in the Atlantic Coast
Conference (ACC), and Pilot Life Insurance was one of the sponsors. Pilot Life Insurance subsequently morphed into
    Jefferson-Pilot Insurance.

This was the era when the ACC Basketball Tournament meant everything. You had to win it to move on to the NCAA's. Bigtime pressure!
Remember Wally Walker in 1976. UVA beat State, MD and UNC in three days. They went on to lose in the NCAA first round to Depaul. Still, the only time UVA has one the ACC Tournament.

The Maryland and NC State had that thriller where the Wolfpack won and the Terps turned down the NIT Bid because they won it the year before. Next year the NCAA added at large bids and the rest is history. I'm glad Lefty finally got in the Naismith Hall of Fame with one of the greatest acceptance speeches ever.

Zilla - you are probably thinking of Jim Thacker - "Thacker and Packer" - another CD Chesly announcer from that era was ex-Wake Forest coach Bones McKinney - you might be thinking of him. I am willing to bet it was one of the two
