This evening I heard Jean Efflam Bauvet play Reflets dans l'eau as an encore (to Bartok's Concerto No. 1) and it sent me back to this Richter recording. What a great evening! Thank you!

Even the great Richter can sometimes get it wrong. Reflets dans l'eau is taken much, much too fast -- it needs more freedom in the phasing, too. The performance, though technically as perfect as we're ever likely to hear, ends up sounding perfunctory. Not so, however, with either of the other two pieces. Homage a Rameau is probably the most profound homage to grief that we have in all of musical literature. And Richter does a very fine job with it. He also does a wonderful rendition of Mouvement.
Il suono prodotto da Richter é unico. L'emozione che produce in noi é molto intensa.
I wonder what it is that no-one realises the player is Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli and not Svyatoslav Richter :D
Michelangeli's rubatos in Reflets dans l'eau were very unmusical; Richter always made the minimum of rubatos, as Debussy intended.
