This masterpiece is reminiscent of the nostalgic rural landscapes' night of my birthplace . Inspired by this masterpiece , I might have a dream of my late beloved mother who deeply loved Debussy . Dreaming about my late beloved mother is a blissful time for me From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵
This is a beautiful performance so different from Angela Hewitt who uses so much rubato each half bar is in a different tempo. Richter keeps the tempos as marked though they might be slower than most but what sound and what beauty of colour.
Weltklasse !
Best "Claire de Lune" performance you can hear on youtube I think, other piano virtuosos here just somewhere away from the point, Richter is straight to the point!
Several people have described this as the "wrong interpretation." I strongly disagree, not because I think it is the "right" interpretation, but because it is //his// interpretation. There is no right or wrong, it's an interpretation; which means it's subjective. Purely taste. I happen to think this is one of the best interpretations to ever be done with this piece, but by no means to I think it is the "right" way to play it, this rendition simply appeals to my taste more than others. It's hard to make this piece NOT beautiful. Just my opinions.
Agreed. Overall I would say he nailed the sensitivity of the piece. Most other interpretations are so fast that some of the contemplative magic is lost IMO.
that's simply wrong, is not anyone interpretation but how composer intended to be played. actually you can find here on youtube debussy playing this. that is the only right interpretation, and richter is the closest to that ... richter is the best composer is God ..he comes with the creation ....you see..... and interprets are just interprets in my eyes
Read the description of Alfredo Casella about Debussy´s performance of his own works. He said that makes you feel that he wasn´t pressing the keys but hitting himself the chords with the hammers. This is the main characteistique of Richter´s sound.I have never heard any pianist who obtained this sound.Listen to Rubinstein or Arrau and you listen a metalic sound while Richter always keeps his sound.Check by listening Schubert´s impromptu opus 94 nº4.
This is unapologetically Claire De Lune. Not too fast is the key. He lets it build in passion as he proceeds. Unequivocally alive, tended too like a weary doting grandfather who has never forgotten the joy of life.
Bellissimo.
Thanks for this comment. I'm a guitarist, not a pianist, so I understand better why I like Richter's interpretation so much when I didn't expect to favour a Russian/German playing Debussy. This interpretation, and 'sound' as you say, really makes this music transcendent.
Read the book "The art of playing piano" written by Heinrich Neuhaus, the teacher of Sviatoslav Richter. The highest note of a chord has to be accentuated more than the other notes of the chord.
Hehe. Somebody calls that "wrong interpretation". A funny comment, when I think about it. Richter put what is written so purely into music. Why should he interprete it? He is able to read the score.
“This number is one during which many people cough. I’ve heard people cough during this number who’ve never coughed in their lives!”-Victor Borge on Claire de Lune
Definitely not your cookie-cutter take on this famous piece. When he is done with it, you somehow feel that it works! I am tired of the traditional vague pastel and blur approach ("impressionistic") to Debussy. This is like a breath of fresh air.
The very only version after 100+ listened, I truly love, adore and touching my soul endlessly deep.
Somehow i love the white noise in the background which provides me with peace of mind

Magical. Richter once again finds truth in music. Words don't do this interpretation justice. Just listen...

It is wonderful, I agree - but do look up Ivan Moravec before drawing any conclusions...
TomGauterin I love Moravec's version but to me Seong-Jin Cho's interpretation is the best.
yes, wonderful and true, and at last once titled with the french word for light or lit, not with the girl’s name, which is further no french word ..
you dont know whats the point.
there are just different interpretations. maybe aarau has the better ''point''
only debussy knew whats the ''point''

@mightysmeagol we won’t ever know how Debussy interpreted it because the film rolls had limited space. He had to play fast to fit the whole piece.
Love that deep and sumptuous tone. The tempo is a bit slow, imo, but Richter, with his ferocious concentration, somehow pulls it off.
Slow is better
This is the masterpiece of Debussy’s aesthetics
Cudesna interpretacija!

Thank you, Aram, for introducing me to this beautiful song 😇
so beautiful

isn't g-sharp the key ?
(yup, wanted to do this joke at least once)

It's a very goo performance. I like Richter very much.

Richter is definitely one of my favourites Debussy interpreters.

Each time I listen again to Richter's rendition, I think 'go to your piano and try to play like him!" (which would be improbable, but try to......)
- WOW~ BEST OF THE BEST...

Great interpretation! Thanks a lot!

I haven't his signature on a London performance programme a very shy man apparently
How does he get that bright- almost popping sound on the highest note on all of his chords, like this: 0:48
Read the book "The art of playing piano" written by Heinrich Neuhaus, the teacher of Sviatoslav Richter. The highest note of a chord has to be accentuated more than the other notes of the chord.

Very deep, not cheap.
As they say there are great pianists and then there's Richter
Clair de Lune:
1. Richter
2. Gieseking
3. Borge

I think Seong-Jin Cho is number 2 now, VERY close to Richter.

This is not andante molto espressivo, this performance is andante. Wrong interpretation in my opinion.
kether82 I'd say closer to adagio molto espressivo. So? Did the piece cohere? Was the phrasing communicative?
