  • Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim | February 2020 | ~45 miles
We planned for 5 days and 4 nights hiking and camping between the South Rim and North Rim. However, on Day 4 we decided to continue hiking past our target point, finishing our R2R2R one day earlier.
Before this trek, the toughest hike I've ever done was climbing up snowy Mt. Shasta (14,179') with a snowboard and a +50lb pack during Avalanche season (tons of snow still). After this trek, the GC R2R2R journey was by far more difficult. We carried +40lb packs which slowly decreased as we ate more food. The majority of the journey was not flat ground, but a series of hills/rollers, steep steps, intense inclines, ice and snow pack.
It was snowing on our first day. By the time the snow would hit the ground, it would melt instantly. Then it was raining with high winds. The first night our tent was wet inside and out. Each night was very cold.
We managed to get about 10-12 hours of sleep each night, recovering from the day's strenuous, but rewarding adventure.
Wake up at 6am, pack tent site, hike at 7am. Finish hike. Eat. Make tent site, sleep at 7pm. Repeat.
We had the ENTIRE North Rim to ourselves on Day 3. It was very serene and peaceful.
On our last day, we were the LAST hikers going up the South Kaibab Trail, watching the sun set as we crossed the finish line to the top of the South Rim. It was just us, a starry night and the entire South Rim.

Can you do this in one day?

@@adamkessel7156 I do know folks who have ran/hiked the R2R2R trail in one day in the Summer time. Spring is probably very doable as well, especially when the snow begins to melt. I believe it is possible to hike this in one shot during the Winter months, especially if you're only carrying minimal weight (day pack with water and snacks) and keeping a moderate/fast pace. Just be aware of the terrain change and shorter daylight hours. It will take longer during the Winter months, due to the snow and ice on the trails. The upside is there are less people at the GC during the Winter, so you will have less foot traffic to worry about than the more popular Summer months. I hope this helps.
