Now the fun part, setting the governor haha! But man, she started right up, not even one revolution before she fired. Thats crazy, great job on the rebuild!
An engine that can run with a broken crank shaft? Come on man, that's impossible. If you have a crank shaft that breaks in a couple places around one cylinder, that one piston will be out of time with the valves and the injector, all the other cylinders forward of the break and of the power output end will not be in time and they can't turn over correctly without being directly linked to the flywheel. I don't know everything about engines but I don't for a second believe that is possible.
Yeah I do know something about them and you can break them. They can't tolerate overheating. The blowers can malfunction and pump shrapnel into the air gallery - they don't like that much and they can run away. Some of them had a flap to stop runaways. If its a mechanical thing, you can break it. They are pretty reliable though.
Like I said, heat exchanger. That's what that is called. The engine runs a closed loop cooling system through the heat exchanger, where the heat is transferred to external water from the lake/river/sea/etc.
I once had my brothers Zetor running in reverse, the battery was dead and i was cranking it by PTO. I put both transmissions in reverse, so the engine rotation was still wrong. The white smoke was coming from the air cleaner, and it didnt like the oil pump running in reverse, so it quickly stalled within seconds, before i could hop on the other tractor to shut her down... ignition and valve timing was a bit off mark, but it did make a few turns on its own...
Some marines engines use both a radiator and outside water, like mine has a radiator in it and it draws outside water, keeps it from rusting in salt water.
hydraulic governer is the quickest response governors on these but may not be suitable for your application normally found on gensets for quick load response
injectors can be tested three ways that i know of removed and put in inj tester which checks atomization and pressure up to 1800 psi for leak down with injecter in the engine with a new style control rack you can flood each cylinder with fuel or you can take a flathead scredriver while the engine is running put srewdriver between fuel line and injector apply force to inj. spring this will hold spring down and cut out cylinder
@SittingMooseShaman You're right on so many levels. Just to really hack the greenies off, it's not repairing, it's RECYCLING.. i.e reusing of old components. They just love that as what's more environmentally concious than recycling? :)
chill pickle as far as throttle response you may have a throttle delay or fuel modulator under the valve cover can be easily removed for quick throttle response wont help with fuel effiency though
@davidlewismd did detroit ever make a split head 12v71? like the 16v71? the bow thruster on my father's supply boat is a 12v71 but it's a single 6 cylinder head on each side...
Detroit engine is very good in but if is not leaking it's not runny Arlington diesel engine Detroit engine is very good answer keep up the good work and have a good day or night keep smiling bye-bye
6v92 @ 550 hp ? I drove a 1984 Peterbilt which had a 365 hp 8v92 and read the Detroit Diesel manual that came with the truck. It claimed 3 ratings for truck applications 365 / 405 / and the " 8v92tta" which was 445hp. I cannot imagine how a 6v92 would make that kind of power, or if so, not under continuous duty? Interesting. That motor in the video sounds very tight and solid, no shaky idle at all....
That the way to get your cylinder head crack by running without cooling system. I bought the same engine from fire pump application. It ran almost 11h but they probably turn the engine without cooling system, so I got crack on the both cylinder head. That why I bought it for nothing
im new to diesel anyone want to take the time to tell me the differences between a Petrol engine and a Diesel engine?and why the guy is rewin the motor with pliers on that side?
I know this is an old post - maybe someone is still monitoring: Would any of you have an estimate on the cost to rebuild a 6v92 in this day and age of 2021?
how do you think that detroits get thev16 or v12 they take 2 8 cylinder or 6 cylinder and bolt the cranks together and the blocks together. this is old technology
Probably worst then that. Due to all the fuel you'd be dumping into it, it aint going to get shit for fuel mileage, and you're going to run really hot. If you want that much horsepower get a 12v71 and stick twin turbos one for each manifold. But it won't fit in a pickup.
Thats a cute little Rocky Mt humming bird, but the color is all wrong. The pristine white paint will be streaked grey when it starts to leak oil as all Detroit's' do.
You're not going to fit a 6v92 into any pickup truck. 1) It's way too heavy, 2) it's way too big, 3) the torque would twist it into a pretzel. Marine engines use a heat exchanger system rather than a radiator, it lets then draw water in from outside the boat to cool the engine, but doesn't run that water *through* the engine.
That's no initial start up every bit of fuel bleeding and winding up was done and startup trials were completed. No build up would just crank up without hesitation
I wouldn't take this giant weed whip engine to the end of my driveway. Absolute junk. 2-STROKE DIESEL WTF. That engineer should have stayed in bed that day.
John A so. 2-stroke diesels have literally been around since the 19th century, and many large container ships, and almost every single locomotive use 2-stroke diesels. Insert *the more you know* rainbow star here.
Your an idiot!! One of the best diesels ever made hands down!! These motors just run well and run high hours before rebuild, only thing I can say bad, they do leak a bit of oil.very reliable and tuff engines!
Beautiful, had 2 in our Coast Guard 47' MLB. Beasts! Sounds great.
My word now that is one immaculate restoration - splendid job.
Tony,
Derby, U.K..
Now hook that thing up to an old allison HTB-748 and listen to that thing roar!!
definitely
good job on that rebuild, it sounds fantastic!
Former Navy EN1 here the 4/53 DDE was usually on skid as a gen set. The Gamma Goat had this engine too.
Now the fun part, setting the governor haha! But man, she started right up, not even one revolution before she fired. Thats crazy, great job on the rebuild!
LOVE them old 2 stroke Detroit's...Hahah....LOVE the fuel rack manipulation tool....
Vice grips...hahaha....Don't want that sucker running away
I remember my days @ Universal Technical Institute. The Diesel pad and runaways. Where is the guys clipboard? This brings back great memories.
Detroit Diesels are the best hands down diesel ever built. You cant break them. Anyone who beggs to differ doesn't know the first thing about them.
especially the old 6 71 they can run with a broken crank
An engine that can run with a broken crank shaft? Come on man, that's impossible. If you have a crank shaft that breaks in a couple places around one cylinder, that one piston will be out of time with the valves and the injector, all the other cylinders forward of the break and of the power output end will not be in time and they can't turn over correctly without being directly linked to the flywheel. Heat...
Yeah I do know something about them and you can break them.

It is possible. I've seen it. It just depends where it breaks.
I love that sound!
Nice looking motor! Sounds awsome
Nice sound.
Sounds really good!
i know how is like start for the first time a just engine repaired it feels good nice job
good job ! runs perfect
That's a bad boy their 💯🎖️
When you see an all-white Detroit you know you're in for some good rippums. Noice.
I never knew 2strokes had valves, it must help with breathing and cleaner exhaust. Engine sounds good and quiet for a DD. Thanks for posting.
Detroit’s are a different type of 2 stroke unlike a motorcycle, chainsaw, weed trimmer. All Detroit 2 strokes have valves.
@NesteHukka2 Best thing I've heard all day.
You are correct, the 4-53 is an inline engine, and it's louder than a 6-71!
Cool, thanks for the info! 2nd HD vid ive seen so far on youtube, thanks for that too.
Wow - need that thing swapped into my rig!
I live 1 mile from Detroit Diesel in Detroit, MI. I think I am gonna walk up to their front gate and ask for a job. I'm in love.
These engines are used in Oshkosh airport fire trucks. In a 6x6 truck, they are around 590 hp, coupled to an Allison automatic transmission.
590hp?!?!
@sandasturner9529 that was the 8V92TA in DDEC form. They can crank out the power
sweet music!
Geez that sounds nice.
Holy Crap does that thing just wanna rev or what? Nice build lads well done.
Like I said, heat exchanger. That's what that is called. The engine runs a closed loop cooling system through the heat exchanger, where the heat is transferred to external water from the lake/river/sea/etc.
They look and sound like the engines in the Armored personnel carriers in the M113's.
Good plan-vise grips on the rack and a bare turbo to slam a steel plate down and stop a run away
@ionsunteu Both, the blower only run on lower rpm, then the turbo takes over on higher rpm somewhere around 1200rpm ( depends on the engine build)
Beauty
Thanx
I once had my brothers Zetor running in reverse, the battery was dead and i was cranking it by PTO. I put both transmissions in reverse, so the engine rotation was still wrong.

Fire it up!
@davidlewismd 4-53 was an in line engine not vee. The 12v71 was a single block unit using two straight 6-71 heads.
@tony565565
This is an marine application. Im sure the old buses had different injectors.
@sideshow45 white is ideal for marine because it makes leaks easy to spot.
Some marines engines use both a radiator and outside water, like mine has a radiator in it and it draws outside water, keeps it from rusting in salt water.
hydraulic governer is the quickest response governors on these but may not be suitable for your application normally found on gensets for quick load response
@oceanjockey1000 If they had primed the oil system and the fact that it is being started at room temperature (20C), it's fine to rev it...
injectors can be tested three ways that i know of removed and put in inj tester which checks atomization and pressure up to 1800 psi for leak down with injecter in the engine with a new style control rack you can flood each cylinder with fuel or you can take a flathead scredriver while the engine is running put srewdriver between fuel line and injector apply force to inj. spring this will hold spring down and cut out cylinder

You need to put that in an Orion I, then add an Allison Transmission and floor it!
chill pickle as far as throttle response you may have a throttle delay or fuel modulator under the valve cover can be easily removed for quick throttle response wont help with fuel effiency though
Once upon a time they were. Don't know if they are now
What!! First start and no "chicken board"?
Sounds good though....Love the "hand operated - tension operated - anti-runaway - fuel rack manipulation - RPM stabilization device" (vice grips)...LOL
are they Miami Vice grips?
@davidlewismd did detroit ever make a split head 12v71? like the 16v71? the bow thruster on my father's supply boat is a 12v71 but it's a single 6 cylinder head on each side...
Nice sized powerplant
Detroit engine is very good in but if is not leaking it's not runny Arlington diesel engine Detroit engine is very good answer keep up the good work and have a good day or night keep smiling bye-bye

It's a marine application ,they have insane hp because of all the water cooling. A 6-71TIB makes 450 hp.
@ionsunteu THAT ENGINE USES BOTH ,
@davidlewismd damn ...heavy sob...
That the way to get your cylinder head crack by running without cooling system. I bought the same engine from fire pump application. It ran almost 11h but they probably turn the engine without cooling system, so I got crack on the both cylinder head. That why I bought it for nothing
@lilbrudder32 you are wrong, I have pictures of one in a 55 chevy pickup. I will prove it to you
WOW 2,500 A hole !!!! seems a bit high ? cause its a boat engine ?
How big is the engine in terms of cubic inches and how much does it weigh?
I want one
About how much marine hp and torque are we looken at? Cruising rpm? Max operational rpm? Thanks.
@drums4life555 They dont make those anymore.
And the bearings are reused :-)?
This was back when gm use to detroit engine before they did the only remanufacture the engine since fall 2010
service on DD-15 ?
im new to diesel anyone want to take the time to tell me the differences between a Petrol engine and a Diesel engine?and why the guy is rewin the motor with pliers on that side?
What is the serial number for this white 6vow gull wing Marine engine?
Which Detroit Diesels went into buses?
Throttle off the layshaft. EMD locomotive diesels run off the same principle
I know this is an old post - maybe someone is still monitoring: Would any of you have an estimate on the cost to rebuild a 6v92 in this day and age of 2021?
Expensive now
is this a v8 or 6 diesel?
Mostly correct, but I don't believe they ever made a 4v53, and the 12v71 was a native v12 while all the other v12s were two v6s.
Why no water pump on it?
marine engine
There is a water pump, it’s gear driven and on the engine.
arent EMD a division of GMC anyway?
Caterpillar owns EMD now
how do you think that detroits get thev16 or v12 they take 2 8 cylinder or 6 cylinder and bolt the cranks together and the blocks together.
this is old technology
Brain fart , setting valves on 6v92 clearance. 012 cold setting?
Probably worst then that. Due to all the fuel you'd be dumping into it, it aint going to get shit for fuel mileage, and you're going to run really hot. If you want that much horsepower get a 12v71 and stick twin turbos one for each manifold. But it won't fit in a pickup.
What does a re-build like this cost?
Thats a cute little Rocky Mt humming bird, but the color is all wrong. The pristine white paint will be streaked grey when it starts to leak oil as all Detroit's' do.
Quantos hp?
550 hp
i personally wouldnt have painted it white... or even close to white.
You're not going to fit a 6v92 into any pickup truck. 1) It's way too heavy, 2) it's way too big, 3) the torque would twist it into a pretzel.

2 stroke,,,, 6*92*2 = 1104 each cylinder has two power strokes in two rotations vs a 4 stroke having only one power stroke per two rotations..
That's no initial start up every bit of fuel bleeding and winding up was done and startup trials were completed. No build up would just crank up without hesitation
sounds like its gasping for air. lol typical detroit
Dirty shop.........
Doctorj63 meaning what?
Old saying. "If the shop is a mess, the repair will be the same".
Dirty shops can also be shops too busy making money.
I wouldn't take this giant weed whip engine to the end of my driveway. Absolute junk. 2-STROKE DIESEL WTF. That engineer should have stayed in bed that day.
