Nice tutorial - love how the shield came out. I tested once, similar method, but using Silver (and shades of it), and a blue contrast paint, and more silver drybrushing / buffing ... the test shield looked pretty awesome. I'm thinking about trying out a red contrast, or akhelian green with that gold scheme. Thanks for inspiration - I still have a whole lot of Stormcast models to paint (from the original first AoS starting box ;> )
Really wonderful! Just wondering why do you want to mix Cryptek Armorshade Gloss with Reikland Fleshshade? both of them redish, but one with gloss one is matt?
Love how you have painted this, the only thing I would like to know how to do is a sort of white in the middle of the shield with like blue lightening coming off the white. So sort of blending in. Thank you.
I think at that scale you could probably base-coat all one colour, and just glaze the tips a few times, and dot-highlight them to take attention, would look great :)
I did a bottle of 50/50 Retributors and the Doombull and came out with a very copper look to the mixed blend. Is mixing it like that a bad idea compared to eyeballing it with a little bit of each when you go back to the pallet? I might try washing it and hitting it with Retributors and see if maybe it still works.
I love making mixes by the bottle! It's really efficient for army painting - maybe work it out with scroops/drops initially on a palette, then stick to that ratio for the final mix though? I imagine you'd need more like 1/4 or 1/5th doombull. The other issue could be if you didn't shake them thoroughly, before making the mix. What do you think? If you reply with any further questions please do it in a different comment, YT is bad for notifications!
I see, thanks! I was doing the drybrush of trollslayer orange(I think, the darker of the two between trollslayer and firedragon bright) over the red armour based off your first Blood Angels video. I have never heard of that technique before XD I am planning to watch the vindicators video soon though, I saw the intro and the matte black looks sick. I think colour wise it is not too bright, just that when drybrushing, other than the edges, it also kind of paints other areas I don't want to have the colour on. Like a dusty layer will form on say the armour panel for eg if I am drybrushing a panel edge. I'll try out washing and the eavy metal technique and if I still need help, I'll comment again. Thank you! (I'll also see if I can post a pic online and link it so you can see)
Loved the finish product for these Chonky boys! Excellent as always Byron, I loved your method of turned gold to silver.... can you tell me how to turn lead to gold as well 😁 Keep up the excellent work and amazing tutorials. Really appreciated and I for one enjoy how you can make the hobby simple and enjoyable rather than the daunting monster it initially appears
Love the video as always. If you start with retributor spray, would you just use the wash to knock it back and give the depth of the doombull mix or stipple with mix anyways? always like the depth you create when stipple start for basecoat but like the time save of spraying. Thanks! Color request, white or perhaps even the silvers with different wash colors, green, blue, etc.
Hey man, I'd put a little doombull in with my wash actually, just a small amount - then go as normal :). That's a good request, basically my 'colour squares' approach, but on a model?
Great tutorial thanks! Only thing that would put me off is the blocking in afterwards as always end up making little slips on that kind of thing but still might give it a go. A couple of questions though How would a thinned down Gore Grunta wash compare to your recipe? (Was given that tip by an excellent painter in my local group) Would you adapt that method at all for models with more non metallics? Thanks!
Hey dude, as long as you get the ratio right it'd be fine, you'd need a fair bit of medium but the somewhat shiny finish isn't a downside on metallics really IMO! Not really, they let you get away with a bit more, but you just have to take extra care over light bases, basically. Regarding the blocking up: Just use contrast :D
Can I ask, do you have videos on how the dampening pads work, how much water shoudld be added and how much moisture should be applied? i know it seems very basic but I think for me this is a bit vital in getting the right coats on the brush between layers.
Hey dude, 9.30? Could you check the timestamp :) Most of the washes are all over. Let us know in a separate comment, YT is bad for notifications for ongoing conversations!
Awesome video. I would love to see Vindicators next. Question for you, would the using drakenhof to make steel color work if using the runelord brass, liberator gold and canoptek alloy triad? They aren’t as yellow as retributor
This is going to be my guideline for my new stormcast Army! Thank you so much for this insight🙏 One question I still have though: If I were to make marble bases like the ones you made, what basecolour would work? I was thinking of green...
Really big fan of your painting techniques! I love building minis but always fall down at the painting stage. My paint jobs look terrible so I never end up finishing an army. Will a complete beginner be able to get similar results?
Michael, mate, we've all been there! I've taught a lot of lessons, and with me reinforcing some 'non painters' have achieved amazing painting, often really shocking me (and producing very similar results). It doesn't always go to plan, but I bet you'd find the technique enjoyable, plus be pleased with some lovely paint jobs. Start simple, be honest with yourself on what doesn't work, and don't stretch too far, clean and simple on a unit can look insanely good. #1 Don't rush too much, 10% more care makes a big difference #2 Flat basecoats where needed make the world of difference, be patient, 2 thin coats if needed (e.g. shoulder pads here) #3 Have fun! Mistakes will happen, that's cool, learn and move on #4 These minis would be perfect, I couldn't recommend much more in warhammer than these stormcast Any more questions/help fire away! In another comment ideally, as YT isn't great at ongoing convo notifications.
So many Dominion content today on YT while I am again waiting for GW to deliver. The finished mini looks great, although I am not so much of a fan of the golden look.
These models look great. I am relative new but am going to give this a shot. I do have a question - I have Vallejo Air Gold - do you think I could use that as my initial gold coat on the armor? Again the model looks great - if mine come out half as good I will be really happy.
Hey dude, it's our XL texture palette, it's a practical + accidental learning tool, we've got a few designs available, so you can pick one to fit your personal taste, too :). store.artis-opus.com/collections/series-d-drybrushing
I've been staring in fear at my Dominion box but this makes me want to get stuck in! If I was to invest in one of your drybrushes to start off with which would be a good all rounder?
Hey man, with these dominion scale minis in mind I'd pick up a Medium+/Large (don't basecoat with it if you just have one!), they're workhorses, and can do best of both worlds, also as one of the most heavily used ones you could always relegate it to metallics if you bought a set as a follow up.
I’d love to see your take on hallowed knights. Do you think the blue shade technique would still be worth while when most of the model is silver or would it be a case of paint it all silver and then shade the gold areas orange?
Either fine man, it depends which is fastest/which is the strongest wash look for large areas... I'd tend to keep the washing for the smallest bits on majority models, e.g. trim and details, not huge panels. That's not to say it couldn't be perfected and be a valid, all-over technique for some reason, it makes lovely interesting colours!
Hey dude, within this recipe - do you mean other paints like it, or other browns to use instead? Like it: Unsure tbh Instead: Mournfang/Dryad Bark - one warm, one a little cooler (gold would look older, await a very imminent future video to see how older looks on SCE)
@@ArtisOpus Just looking for some non GW paints close to doombull brown, as I really dislike their paint pot design. But sounds like, just experiment with darker browns. I think p3 bloodstone would probably work, but on camera the doombull looked closer to meaty ochre from p3
@@asuranshadow9491 Ahh! Try AK interactive, a lot of brands are a little more matte than GW's satin finish, that doesn't matter for basecoating though, so whatever is your favourite :)
I always get a bit jelly watching detail work. I partially blinded my left eye a couple years back and now lack depth perception. So dabbing in details is an even slower process made worse if painting around other parts of the model. Protect your eyes people.
Sorry to hear it, Lawrence! What do you do to try and work around the difficulties? I've had this mentioned a couple of times in comments, and would love to be able to hand out any useful advice that I could. Is drybrushing a useful technique for you to have up your sleeve? I always wondered, as so much of it is based on feel for me.
@@ArtisOpus I don't know about Lawrence's situation, but drybrushing is how a friend of mine convinced another player that painting was possible for him. The man had chronic shaking in his hands, and fine work seemed impossible for him.
@@LetholdusKaspyr This is amazing! I've spoken to a couple of people with arthritis who've said similar. I think subtractive techniques are also really helpful, as the original application doesn't have to be precise, and the removal is often very tactile, rather than delicate (e.g. wiping off streaking grime carefully with a microfibre). Thanks for chipping in, dude
Byron - How strong is the two-tone with the gold showing under the 'silver'? It was a little hard to tell from the still shots? I've always tried to avoid doing Silver and Gold together because of the bleed over when trying to paint the two close to each other... but this seems stupidly simple...
I think I understand the question! LMK if not: It all but knocks it back man! Do make sure you hit *everywhere* with 2 washes - I missed a top right scale you can see from rear-view, that's what happens if you miss areas! :D Otherwise man, it's super effective if you get the blue mix correct, you could even use stronger blues/a careful drop of leviadon in there.
@@ArtisOpus Awesome - thanks man! I have a few test models with gold still on them --- so I can run a few test cases to get the mix/effect just right. As always - great content!
I have never seen getting medium out of the bottle with the other end of the brush (at 6:00). Why do you do it like that, isnt that ineffective? Just curious!
Nah not at all dude, it's just faster than getting a clean brush! I fast dip without cleaning often... but with these colours that's a recipe for disaster, they're far too strong!
Heya. So when I drybrush edges, I notice that sometimes my paint even though its quite dry and little, it still layers over the flat surfaces. Eg, I am trying to drybrush the top of a space marine's backpack for edge highlights, but I end up with a dusty layer across the entire top. Do you have any advise on how to prevent that? Thanks! :)
Hey man, I presume this is when you have a high contrast? (e.g. black/dark blue - light grey edges, etc) You can take a technique from 'Eavy metal here, it's their 'fat pre-highlight-highlight' (there's no way in hell they call it that). I use this on our Vindictors video, it's a drybrush which feels like a bit of a waste of time, because it's barely any different from the basecoat, but it means that any edging that follows doesn't stand out as much, so gives you a bit of a transition. Another option is to wash the whole thing down. Is that helpful? If not let me know in another comment, YT isn't great for ongoing conversation notifications.
In regards to my previous comment, the wash applied about 9.40. It doesn’t say what is used. Also have you tried an end wash using casandora yellow (sp) contrast?
Absolutely, dude! Check our recent community post for a huge list of potentials to chose from, I'll cover some classics and then go according to public vote :)
Good video. Nice use of the washes however at 5:35 you didn't clean the brush. This is why I despise the Cidatel pots and always transfer them to dropper bottles.

Watched this video a dozen times over the last week. You do a lot of drybrushing in your videos and I was wondering... how do you deal with the chalky effect you often get from drybrushing?
Hey dude, it's just not an issue for me with our brushes, and using the dampening pad, do you have both available? There's a couple of things to avoid: Never go thick with paint Basecoat thinner (dampening pad wetter than normal' to ensure your foundation is high quality Don't use matte primer, or matte paints Let me know your answers/any further questions in another comment, YT is bad for notifications!

How good are these latest minis!? Great guide. Thanks for uploading.
My pleasure man, and (for painting at least), they're A1!
Excellent as always Byron, I loved your method of turned gold to silver.... can you tell me how to turn lead to gold as well 😁
Keep up the excellent work and amazing tutorials. Really appreciated and I for one enjoy how you can make the hobby simple and enjoyable rather than the daunting monster it initially appears
Makes me want to buy some stormcast annihilators , but they will just end up in my box of shame 🥴
Great tutorial Byron 👍
Go for it, Vicky, they paint up so fast they encourage you to do them! :D
When your wash mixture looks like soy sauce in a sushi dipping dish, you know you nailed it.
😅😅😅 this is actually so true! That deep, rich colour!
Great tutorial thanks! Only thing that would put me off is the blocking in afterwards as always end up making little slips on that kind of thing but still might give it a go.
A couple of questions though
How would a thinned down Gore Grunta wash compare to your recipe? (Was given that tip by an excellent painter in my local group)
Would you adapt that method at all for models with more non metallics?
Great video! Quick question, what wash do you use at about 9.30 and is this an overall wash or just recess? Thanks!
Hey dude, 9.30? Could you check the timestamp :) Most of the washes are all over.

I would love to see a SCE tutorial for the Celestial Vindicators!
I wonder what I could have been working on, due out soon... :D
@@ArtisOpus awesome can't wait to see it!
@@BlakePaintsSlow Hope it did the job ;)
@@ArtisOpus absolutely thanks I'm gonna hopefully give it a go tonight!
Awesome video. I would love to see Vindicators next. Question for you, would the using drakenhof to make steel color work if using the runelord brass, liberator gold and canoptek alloy triad? They aren’t as yellow as retributor
Tutorial just dropped ;) In theory yeah, maybe you just need less/it has to work less hard :)
Where id you learn all this about shades? Real good tips
Thank you I have learned a lot from you
This is going to be my guideline for my new stormcast Army!
#1 Don't rush too much, 10% more care makes a big difference
#2 Flat basecoats where needed make the world of difference, be patient, 2 thin coats if needed (e.g. shoulder pads here)
#3 Have fun! Mistakes will happen, that's cool, learn and move on
#4 These minis would be perfect, I couldn't recommend much more in warhammer than these stormcast
Any more questions/help fire away! In another comment ideally, as YT isn't great at ongoing convo notifications.
Great vid I'm gonna go far a white armour with gold trim.
That'll look amazing dude, weathered, or not? Always the question, with white!
@@ArtisOpus probebLy without weathering might look a bit like nurgle
wow the color looks fucking stunning
So many Dominion content today on YT while I am again waiting for GW to deliver.
The finished mini looks great, although I am not so much of a fan of the golden look.
Thanks dude! Sorry about your wait :( so nice to get big stuff on release day to join the hype, it's worth the wait though!
These models look great. I am relative new but am going to give this a shot. I do have a question - I have Vallejo Air Gold - do you think I could use that as my initial gold coat on the armor? Again the model looks great - if mine come out half as good I will be really happy.
WOW!! SO COOL
Thanks, dude!
That was some color alchemy!!! I wonder what other colors you could do that wash trick with?
Basically anything, especially if going over with a stronger colour. Crazy isn't it!
Can I ask what you're placing your paints on here? I've never seen a big palette like that black one you're dropping paints directly onto, looks cool
Hey dude, it's our XL texture palette, it's a practical + accidental learning tool, we've got a few designs available, so you can pick one to fit your personal taste, too :).

@@ArtisOpus Thanks for the advice! I'll do exactly that. Really enjoying your content & look forward to the upcoming Dominion stuff.
@@mcdanger1985 My pleasure, dude :). Got some nasty little Gobbos landing tonight!
Would love to see you paint the Skin on the Gnashtoof
Is this the worm-weasel? :D I haven't put him together yet, it is a cool mini, though!
@@ArtisOpus Exactly
I’d love to see your take on hallowed knights. Do you think the blue shade technique would still be worth while when most of the model is silver or would it be a case of paint it all silver and then shade the gold areas orange?
Either fine man, it depends which is fastest/which is the strongest wash look for large areas... I'd tend to keep the washing for the smallest bits on majority models, e.g. trim and details, not huge panels.
That's not to say it couldn't be perfected and be a valid, all-over technique for some reason, it makes lovely interesting colours!
Can you give some alternatives for the Doombull brown? Looks really orange on the camera, but not sure how true to the color that is. Thanks.
Hey dude, within this recipe - do you mean other paints like it, or other browns to use instead?
Like it: Unsure tbh
Instead: Mournfang/Dryad Bark - one warm, one a little cooler (gold would look older, await a very imminent future video to see how older looks on SCE)
That bit with the blue shade to make silver was amazing! How would that work over a less textured area? For instance over the entirety of the armor?
You'd have to use more of a glaze/filter than a wash, but it should do yeah! Please report back :D
Is there a substitute for the the cryptic armour shade gloss I can't seem to find it anywhere
For Metallic Paint do you use a separate brush? Cheers
Thanks for am awesome video! My gold came out way to dark, on the next unit ill try it witb eithe rless doombull or just pure retibutor!
Hey dude, really? Maybe the wash was heavy? Retributor shouldn't have issues shining, especially with the drybrushing stages. Our pleasure :)
LMK if not:
It all but knocks it back man! Do make sure you hit *everywhere* with 2 washes - I missed a top right scale you can see from rear-view, that's what happens if you miss areas! :D
Otherwise man, it's super effective if you get the blue mix correct, you could even use stronger blues/a careful drop of leviadon in there.
@@ArtisOpus Awesome - thanks man! I have a few test models with gold still on them --- so I can run a few test cases to get the mix/effect just right. As always - great content!
@@jackgeiger2498 My pleasure, dude :)
(e.g. black/dark blue - light grey edges, etc)
You can take a technique from 'Eavy metal here, it's their 'fat pre-highlight-highlight' (there's no way in hell they call it that).
What did you do for the highlights on the straps and weapon handles?
Hey, do you think this method could be applied to models that are mostly gold trimmed? e.g) Black Legion Space Marines
If you were happy to block in the black panels then yeah, it could take time, but often a good flat black looks great next to bling!
@@ArtisOpus Thanks :)
Hey, Could I just run the doombull brown and retributor armor in my airbrush as basecoat? What ratios did you use?
In regards to my previous comment, the wash applied about 9.40. It doesn’t say what is used.
Also have you tried an end wash using casandora yellow (sp) contrast?
Hallowed Knights 🤞
Noted, you give me any excuse to drybrush metallics on these minis, and I'm there, mate :D
I’ve got a the full set of the D series coming with my Cult of Paint Kickstarter… so any time before then pleeeeeaaaaaaase 😂
Any chance on showing them in different non metallic paint like cyan, purple, yellow .... you get my point :)

What did you spray it with at the beginning, the models are black?
Any primer you have available bud, I used Chaos Black here :)

There's a couple of things to avoid:
Never go thick with paint
Basecoat thinner (dampening pad wetter than normal' to ensure your foundation is high quality
Don't use matte primer, or matte paints
