  • When I hear this song I immediately think of someone who is a fighter, someone who will not let anyone or anything stand in her way. When I think of gymnasts who are fighters, Rebecca Bross is the first one in my mind. This is because of her fighting spirit throughout her career. Rebecca Bross had so many competitions where she had mistakes or injuries that kept her from competing at her full potential, but even when she made a mistake, she never gave up. Not one time in her career did Rebecca Bross give up and there were plenty of times where we would all understand if she did. Rebecca is a special kind of gymnast that fought through every single hardship and disappointment but remained an amazing gymnast. The second gymnast I think of is Nastia Liukin. Nastia had a bad year in 2007 because she was dealing with injuries and not many people thought she would ever recover to her full strength. Not only did she keep fighting, she kept improving and when it counted she hit the meet of her life to win the Olympic All Around title. Nastia's love for the sport kept her going and she tried to make a second trip to the Olympics only to have bad mistakes at 2012 classics, nationals, and the Olympic Trials. Everyone thought her chance at making the Olympic team was over at nationals, but she continued on to the Olympic trials and despite not delivering her best performance, she ended her career in a graceful way and continued to show us throughout 2012 what a fighter she is. I wanted to choose two gymnasts for this montage who have meant a lot to USA gymnastics and to all of us. The legendary WOGA girls fill that role. Nastia and Becca were both queens of the sport at some point in time and USA's "it girls." The spotlight was on them from the time they became elite and it never wavered. I also wanted to choose two gymnasts who are retired (well Becca has not said she is retired yet) because I wanted to use the lyric "we remain" to symbolize that even though these gymnasts are not competing anymore, they will always remain in our hearts and in USA gymnastics. I don't think we will ever forget the two of them. I also though the lyric "burn me with fire, drown me with rain" to symbolize that these two gymnasts can fight through anything; disappointment, injuries, fear, mistakes, and so on. No matter what happened to these two gymnasts, they kept fighting and they never gave up.
I also wanted to send a message to all of you that whatever hardships we are facing in our own lives, we can fight through them. No matter who doubts you or doesn't support you, no matter what stands in your way, you can accomplish anything you want. We will always remain.

I miss watching of them compete in gymnastics. They were two of the best USA gymnasts that this country has ever had.
