Why Would You Play A Signature Bass?

  • As I say goodbye to the last short-scale bass in my collection this week, I'm ponding the fact that I no longer have one, and asking myself how I would go about designing or contributing to the production of the ideal short-scale 4-string bass.

    For the affordable line of instruments, that was Marcus Miller's approach working with Sire. I bought a budget-priced, short scale 5-string Ibanez during the pandemic, and I really love the little bass - similar kind of vibe to what your (former) Musicmaster had started out as. Can't wait for the new album!

    Twenty years ago, I took delivery of my Warwick Custom Shop Corvette Proline short scale (30.75", same as Gibson) fretless. I ordered it specifically to experiment with alternate tunings, like cello tuning (in fifths), A Standard (like the top four strings of a six string bass), piccolo tuning, that sort of thing, not because I necessarily needed a smaller instrument.

    I designed my short scale bass long ago and i play it a lot! Go for it and consider to use small frets, like mandolin frets, they're great!

    I got a Fender Mustang (Sherwood green) a few months and haven't looked back. My shoulders and hands are battered by illness and a lifetime of poor decisions :) . It has made practising and performing a hell of a lot easier.

    I played a p bass for 20 years. I still have her out on display in the house, like a beautiful trophy wife. My muscular dystrophy was getting so bad a year ago that I was going to have to retire. My band has some shows in front of at least a thousand people this year, and I was going to have to retire due to muscular dystrophy. Do you know how heartbreaking it is to have to retire because your body is rejecting you? It was a really rough time. My priest, a former Oi Punk bass player, told me to try a short scale. I go out and get the Warren Ellis four string base made by Eastwood and I don't have to retire. Glory to god, and Warren Ellis for designing this thing.

    I'd be happy to purchase and play a signature instrument if it's specifications aligned with my needs, even if I am not a fan of the person. I love that Taylor Swift plays a Fender Johnny Marr Jaguar. I am a fan of both, and Johnny Marr has designed a truly great version of the Jaguar. I also really like the Steve Bailey Jazz Bass VI and Warwick Streamer.

    In the end the purge will feel great and you can focus on new things. But don't play it again or you will find out exactly why you loved it!! I'm a huge fan of that old school, fat, passive, thumpy, 4 string sound and that bass sounds great. Similar to the sound you hear on all older R&B songs and lots of classic rock songs with a prominent bass in the mix.

      I believe the price of the object should be what it's honestly worth, not what the customer is willing to pay. Cheers from Mexico.

      Three people literally just sent me links to the SBL podcast talking about signature basses. I haven't heard/seen the episodes, but will gladly link them for you guys here to check out: ruclips.net/video/Pvavd-aAzZ4/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/9_D3okASoi4/видео.html
      From the titles alone, I'm interested to see how much we agree/disagree on the topics. I know it was a big talking point when I was a guest on their podcast, so it should be an interesting listen.
      This is what truly not being plugged into social media is like... for the most part I love not seeing anything or anyone, and it allows me to concentrate on doing what I do. Sometimes this happens, and there is a missed opportunity for a potential collaboration on a topic. Will try and check out both these episodes asap.

    Btw, I dont remember if you already said it. But, why is it your are going to record in Argentina? (Is Argentina right?)

    • @janekgwizdalapodcast8028
      @janekgwizdalapodcast8028  Год назад +2

      Every year I plan a big recording project for my own music. Last year I took the whole band to Spain, this year it happens to be Argentina because my recording engineer lives there and came up with a nice place to make music.
      It's all about getting out of what is familiar, and into a situation that could inspire something I could never have anticipated. We give ourselves the best chance for a successful outcome by hiring all the right people, and ultimately having trust in one another that everyone is on the same page and there to serve the music.
      And for the audience, that translates into something special to not only participate in with each journey to a new recording location, but in listening to the music and knowing the story behind the intent with which each locale was chosen.

    I don't know man, I don't see the reasoning behind getting rid of the Musicmaster. You don't need the money for rent... it's a different tonal colour, and 1 that you've gravitated to as an alternative to the modern, high-end basses. If you didn't like it, that would be a different story.
