The downsizing the Bass Herd, simplifying the home studio space, and "I'm not a collector." ideas all really resonates with me! I've got 6 electric basses (all budget instruments, but I love them), a double bass, a standard-tuning guitar and a baritone guitar, 2 synths...but a small fraction of 300 pedals ;). This year, my upright has become my sole gigging bass, and I've considered offloading some of my bass guitars...but 2 of them I have owned since 2002 and have sentimental value, so I don't think I can sell them, regardless of how little I play them. All that said, I am considering buying 2 more basses, and an HX Stomp XL, and selling a synth to buy another one. I just recently modded my Sterling by Music Man 35HH bass to move the neck pickup (it was too wooly and warm, but not in the good way, so I never really used it) back towards the bridge, with the pickups side-by-side (a la your Matteson!), and I get so much more definition, clarity, punch and heft out of the neck pickup now! For scale lengths, generally 30" is considered short scale, 32" is considered medium scale, and 34" is considered long scale. But as bassists, we all know there's no "standard", only what feels and sounds best for you! Fantastic episode, Janek! 👏👏
Love what you said about feeling inspired and motivated in an empty room! Doing up my apartment at the moment and I'm trying to block out a weekend so I can write and record an EP in the room that will eventually become my office/studio
As much as I’d love to snatch up a few pedals from you, I’d encourage you to keep them. I’ve gone through a couple of pedal purges over the years and always end up re-buying stuff that I’ve sold.
Hi Janek, for me it is hard to led go, even if it is an Instrument I don't use at all....My fear is to regret it in years. But I think you did the right decision, even for the musicmaster....It wasn't even the Bass you recorded with(I watched the video several times.....)Filling the home with lots of gear is not healthy ,specially when your personal focus(wife, kid, goals, sound) changes.....
re: how many tones you can squeeze out of the Matty -- I was seriously impressed with how many tones you squeezed out of the F bass live when we saw you at the MIM. And picking up things like that during a live show is even more impressive (vs a "proper" listen on a hi fi system). There were times your tone got scary close to upright territory. If you do pare the stable down to 5, it gives you an open slot for a fretless. :D
Go!

Hi Janek, really miss seeing you and Chelsea together in a podcast. Saludos!
Me too!

Hey Janek. Really interesting pod this week. What nylon tape wounds do you tend to use? Trying to get the right sound on my p-bass.

What about that bass strap you're wearing?? 🤨If not, where can I get one?
Never thought I'd watch jazz legend Janek Gwizdala play and sing Firework by Katy Perry LOL!
