I've had Philo for a couple years now - grandfathered in at $20/month. I have over the air reception of local channels, so the lack of those on Philo is not an issue. Great value for me and my viewing habits.
Icut the cord in August of 2020,haven't looked back. Philo at the old 20 dollar rate and Hulu basic and my OTA antenna gives me the full spectrum of what cable was for my household. No one is a sports fan in my household and most national news is available for free on OTA or Haystack or Newsy. 4 Rokus and this plus HD Homerun takes care of what was costing me almost 270 bucks in 2020. A savings of over 100 bucks a month after the initial Roku investment was recouped. Great review,Lon.
Thanks for reviewing Philo. It's a great service that few seem to know or care about. We've enjoyed it for years and still pay only $16/month. Yes, we use alongside an antenna with network tuners/Plex. We also have Prime for the free shipping. The service has been rock solid and the interface has been just fine.
I use the Channels DVR application, along with the philo Service, and over the air. TV antenna, it is a perfect solution, it is a bit of a learning curve to figure out how to pull those philo channels into the channels DVR, but once you do, it's all in one program guide. you do not need the Philo DVR. you can also pull in the channels from the. pluto application, and you have the ability to record those channels and skip over commercials. 0:55
I've had Philo since it launched so paying 20.00 with only Paramount + as my only other subscription, which also gives me my local CBS station for news etc. Since I first subscribed to Philo, they have added channels each year.
I have had Philo for several months now, and I quite like it. I can't justify paying for RUclips TV, Hulu Live, and such, because I can get all the locals for free with an antenna. The only sport I care about it baseball. and I have a standalone app for that, and I only pay for it in season. I also do not want to pay for national cable news channels, I can watch plenty of news for free. For the cable channels that I do want, Philo fills that need just fine. I also like that they are nbot constantly raising their prices.
I think Philo might be named after Philo Farnsworth - the inventor of TV. Just a guess. His house was located in the town I use to live in and I've driven by it probably a thousand of times over the years. I have Philo - completely happy with it. Don't watch sports, plenty of other places to get news - so a perfect fit for me. Grandfathered in at $16/mn. Lon - I see you're still using the onn streamer? Bought one on a whim, but I'm a big fan of it.
I'm surprised you didn't know about Philo until now. It's the best value compared to the other streaming services! The 2 things that it misses are: locals with major networks (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC), sports. With locals, you can easily get it with a good antenna, so if you can live without sports, this is the best! I liked their channel guide before, but now it looks kinda funky
love Philo, have had it setup as my comcast replacement for 2 years now, along with an HD Homerun for local OTA TV, and it’s all running on my own Synology NAS under Channels, which is also hosted on the NAS.. theres been a few hiccups here and their, but overall I love it, and especially how much I’m saving.. I don’t care or watch sports, so why pay for it 😉
I’ve used Philo for a bit over a year, I use it alongside an AirTV and it works well. As you stated, it is pretty affordable so don’t expect the world, I do find the DVR just meh, just show me what you recorded, I don’t need the entire season and past seasons. I also don’t like that shows take forever to load and recently seem to buffer and audio/video aren’t in sync. Also, AppleTV will stream Philo about 50% of the time but usually won’t upgrade the guide or even load the guide; this is a known issue but they have yet to fix it which is annoying. Other than that, I do like it, it’s cheap and offers the channels I watch.
Sounds good. I'm thinking of quitting Comcast because my bill is up to $100 and they charged me another $100 to come out and do a simple fix, which I think they should have been able to walk me through over the phone. Pressing a button on my cable remote, and a button on my TV fixed it. I never watch Network TV, or Sports, and I see they have almost all the channels I usually watch. Thanks for the video.
Am I the crazy one or not lol, I have been using Philo for over 3 years at this point and for the life of me I have been calling it (Fi-lo)! Hearing how you are naming it and coming out of your mouth, Lon you are making me seconded guess! 3 years I thought it was pronounced (Fi-lo), now I can't un-hear the way you say it! Please correct me if I am wrong but 3 years of saying (Fi-lo) now makes me feel so wrong in life lol!
Are the shows/movies the same that would be aired on the TV (ie - what's listed in the TV Guide) or, as with Plex for Game Show or Hallmark Channel for example, it's old, old stuff that is discontinued and no longer aired? FYI: I don't have a physical TV, only PC/MacBook Air M
Lon, I think you're going to like H&I. They air an episode from each Star Trek series through Star Trek: Enterprise Sunday-Friday nights. Star Trek: TOS at 8 eastern followed by TNG at 9 and so on.
Hmm, this is tempting. I have OTA\HDHOMERUN + Channels already. I do have YTTV for the occasional sports, but the cost of YTTV is pretty steep, on part with a cable sub.
I’ve been using Philo for several years now at the old $16 rate. It has the few cable stations I watch and I can use the individual station apps for on demand of certain shows. I went Internet only and saved about $100 a month. As for the pronunciation I’ve used fai low. That is also how Google shows it pronounced.
Get your national news from RUclips, local news & network sports from your antenna. Philo is then the perfect companion for those willing to pay for ad-supported TV--because of its low cost and well-chosen channel lineup. It has AMC, A&E, Lifetime, History, Hallmark, MeTV, MeTV+, H&I and more of our favorites. Unfortunately I can't install Philo on my LG TV :(
On movies the save button only saves for a month or so, at least on the movies I have chosen to save. They change the software every so often and the menu changes and I don't always find the changes useful to me. But it is inexpensive.
I’d be interested to find out if any of these solutions, provide a “channel flipping“ experience like that of cable or satellite TV without having to go into a guide. I have some stakeholders who would love to cut the cord while keeping a similar experience.
No streaming services can flip directly from one program to another without going back to the guide. Although some of them, you can keep your program that you’re watching on while you are flipping through the guide. The world is changing. Cable and satellite are dying. Streaming is the future and it’s not hard to learn. I am 68 years old.
If you are not interested in news or sports Philo is an excellent choice. Also, if you are a T-Mobile customer, you can get it for $15 a month for 12 months. In terms of what you get for the money, especially as a T-Mobile customer, Philo is by far the best value.
You can channel surf by pressing up and down on a streaming device's remote. That avoids going into the guide. Just turn off the start from beginning feature. But, if you want to rely on channel numbers, the only streaming TV service that provides a cable-like experience, complete with their own STB and full remote with numpad, is DirecTV STREAM. It's pricey for a streaming service but it's a high quality service. Streaming is a case of you get what you pay for.
I wish there were a TV service that played programming from the 1950s and 1960s? It seems any television that is classified as classic, is from the 1980s. I guess that indicates how old I am getting! 0:55
Tried the free trial, but could not deal with the guide format. Comcast Xfinity shows 5 at a time with a large description including date of taping. Also, for some reason, the guide was blurry for me. Strange because Pluto and Xfinity guides are clear.
I subscribe to Philo, subscribed a few years ago. Made the mistake of getting Spectrum, big mistake. I’m back and they are still adding channels. I’m not a sports person and sports is the reason other streamers are getting expensive. Some streaming companies don’t like Philo because non sports people are signing up in great numbers. I desire not wanting to pay a group of actors to play football or basketball. I also have Frndly TV.
Uh, I'm 99.9% sure that Philo rhymes with "eye." It comes from TV inventor Philo Farnsworth. There's a little town just south of me named Philo also pronounced fye-lo, but Illinois also has a Cairo and Athens that aren't pronounced the normal way (they're KAY-ro and AY-thenz here).
How can i quickly scan through the live channels using a single click? I used to have this feature in my legacy Fios TV but cant see that on Philo, i need to go back to Guide to do so
Looks good. Stay away from RUclips TV. I signed up for the "3 week free trial". I canceled before 3 weeks, but they charged me anyway. I filed an appeal. They investigated themselves and found "no fraudulent activity". Appeal denied. lol. Oh, and they charged my card 5 days after I started the "3 week free trial".
If everything is recorded then why not just save everything and offer it On-Demand? Why would I need to initiate a recording when they are already doing that? They don't make a hundred separate recordings for each viewer. You are just accessing a recorded video like I would access Lon's recorded live streams. What about skipping commercials? I assume you can't do this with budget TV services.
What is Philo a few years from now (streaming cable content provider) when cable dies or has no more original content? Are you paying for a bunch of acquisitions that are all on the free platforms like Tubi and Pluto TV?
I'm about to pull the trigger one one of these , and it would be Philo except for one glaring hole - no SyFy channel. Hard to find Syfy anywhere as an add-on. Even Peacock doesn't appear to carry it, which seems , well, dumb.
If you don't care about sports and like the lineup there's zero reason not to go with them. I wish there were more niche services. Or even better, a provider that lets you choose your channels and build a plan that doesn't include garbage that you'll never watch.
Is the $25 price solid….Because some say that price then there’s hidden fees & next thing you know u are paying $35. So is it flat $25 per month. 70+ channels are great for $25 Thanks for a great video
"philo doesn't have Fox or MSNBC or CNN" Actually, if you had said that about 10 years ago, that would have been a deal-breaker but now I get most of my news on RUclips so it's all good.
It keeps the recordings for a year? But then you state there is no way to delete them. Well what happens after the first year runs out? What is the quality of these recordings? Since you don't have them on local storage making backups of them to local storage is something people are going to want to do. Spyware is not something I'd want to hook up for my aging parents who don't know how to stop that sort of thing.
For me, I don't feel like paying $25+ for only a few channels that I like to watch (A&E, diy, and HGTV being a few) and I do miss out on new episodes of the First 48. I don't mind paying $10/month for just A&E. I cannot stand advertisements anyway. Just want to live an ad-free life.
Philo advertised a couple of months ago stating the it's the best deal for cable alternatives..$25.00 with NO price increase EVER..now they raised their price to $28.00 per month, which translates to 12% increase, so they are NO better than any of the other garbage that's out there trying to rip you off!!!!
It is a great value but you also do not get TBS, TNT, or any of the NBC (SYFI & USA) channels. Sling TV even with is flaws provides the best bang for you buck if you want some news and sports channels along with some of tne otners.
ahhhh Philo , good ole days ...when i cut the cord about decade ago, i got Philo & was paying $15 a month that time for it, was beginning of Philo , had it for a year then i changed it to You tube TV & still having YTTV would NEVER changed it to other services Lovin it ...Philo is good, now is $10 increase , but is not complete , channels & feathers is missing thats why is cheaper so NO DUH, is good for people in budget or beginners also Fridly TV is another one..hahahah u call it Feeelo is PHILO
Over-the-air local network reception? Excuse me while I take a moment to laugh. It has nothing to do with the local aspect of OTA "Big 3" (...OK, so now its more like "Big 5" when you include the much younger FOX + even younger CW). I lived very close to Green Bay WI awhile back. This was when DTV was just starting. It wasn't even built into the tuners of most TV's yet. I had an extra digital box that I bought at Best Buy or Circuit City or one of those other brick and mortar stores that have basically been crushed by Amazon. In the majority of the country (land area, not population) I don't even think that you are able to receive a signal from a local DTV channel. Analog was hard enough. The range of digital is even worse. However, there are always going to be a few shows on these channels that we want to see and this is when we run into the whole problem with so many people not being able to receive locals w/an antenna. My "antenna" back then was a tiny little thing. It annoys me SO much though that they don't make these channels easier to receive. If you start talking about Satellite or RUclips TV then we start bouncing our heads off of that huge price barrier again. Do we see the same viewership as we did back in the 70's or 80's when "M*A*S*H" or "The Cosby Show" were on the air? NO!! Not even close. What really annoys me is how the streamers that actually have direct relationships with the networks (Peacock/NBC, Paramount+/CBS and to a lesser extent Hulu/ABC since they will only show you the actual network shows w/o the local content the next day since they want you to buy Hulu w/live TV option. If you have to do that then you are again approaching cable costs. Yes you can get the actual local channels w/NBC and CBS on their streamers but only on the higher priced tiers. They have commercials so why the Hell are they only on the higher priced packages ONLY? There is an ever widening gap between the w/ad and w/o ad pricing on all of these streamers too. As of the first of next year (2024) my rent ALONE is going to cost me about 65% of my TOTAL income which is just insane. I have heard numbers saying that housing/rent prices shouldn't exceed 30% of total income. What a joke! If it were not for the relatively small amount I have saved I would be on the street. No joke! My rent increased 18% in 2023 and is set to again increase another 23% in 2024. Moving in with relatives--which can be a nightmare--is happening more and more. People are having to look for less expensive options on these "luxury" items like TV, phones, internet for example or those SUPER luxury items like food and healthcare! Anyway......I have yet to make my final switch decision but it will likely be SlingTV although it sounds as if their price increases have been very consistent in the last few years too. I like the idea that Philo actually gives you more channels but w/o the news channels for me? I don't think that will be my first choice. If Philo stays at $25 (or so) though while Sling keeps jumping $5 every year I may reconsider that choice. Sling is affiliated w/Dish & their prices have gone up a lot lately too. Ever since this damn Pandemic it has become almost unaffordable for even the basics like housing & food. Crazy. I really like that Philo has MTV "classic" and some of the others that Sling does not. I am in the middle of my 7-day trial but I was watching MTV Classic earlier today longing for the days when MTV actually played MUSIC!! I don't even know what the "M" stands for anymore. It ain't music though. The "W" in "The Weather Channel" is becoming less significant too. It used to be weather and meteorologists on-air 24/7 but now we just get the 9-5'er actual on-air people and late at night or on the weekends we get to learn now semi trucks haul freight in Canada and Alaska
I look forward to watching your next sponsored Plex video. Could you do me a favor and ask Keith Valory the next time you talk to him what he did with the three leftover hot dogs that he most likely had left over when he fired the 37 employees right before independence day because the ad market is drying up and his consumers are tired of paying for the service that he decided to inject ads into. I'm assuming he bought five packs of ballparks so they would all have a hot dog as a going away meal. You should be able to triple your sponsorship price since he is saving so much money now.
Apparently I pronounced the name incorrectly. You can correct me below in this thread.
I won't correct you :) but to just let you know that you still don't have account on threads app, and maybe it's a good time to think about that.

File-O tv
Philo + Pluto TV both integrated with Channels DVR = the BEST TV experience.
I've had Philo for a couple years now - grandfathered in at $20/month. I have over the air reception of local channels, so the lack of those on Philo is not an issue. Great value for me and my viewing habits.
Same here. I love it cause I can watch cable TV on my phone.
Do they have cartoon network?

Thanks for reviewing Philo. It's a great service that few seem to know or care about. We've enjoyed it for years and still pay only $16/month. Yes, we use alongside an antenna with network tuners/Plex. We also have Prime for the free shipping.

In addition to rewinding back to the start of the current show, you can also rewind back several days on most channels.
When selecting a show to watch, hold the select button and it'll automatically start the content instead of having to move past the landing page.
I can't here to say just that. Took me a minute to realize that and I was so glad when I did.
Back when I had Philo, I would DVR everything… the VOD had numerous commercial breaks that were 3 minutes + DVR was the way to go to skip commercials
Very thorough and well done, as usual -- thanks Lon.

Know anyone who's willing to sell a monthly profile for that price? I envy users who scored it.
How reliable is Philo's DVR? Since the DVR records all episodes of a chosen show, is there an easy way to find only the new recorded episodes?
They show seasons and episodes if that helps.
Get your national news from RUclips, local news & network sports from your antenna. One of their claims is misleading. Not everything stays saved for one year. There's a 72-hour limit on some films. But it's a great service overall.
If you sign up, are you grandfathered in at $25 going forward?
$25 is the price currently.

Lon Thanks Much !.......
Philo includes TV Everywhere. Also $10 credit by T-Mobile
I assume they named it after Philo (FY-LOW) T. Farnsworth one of several people credited with the invention of Television
You may also want to look at Frndly TV that is ultra low cost.

Since you don't have them on local storage making backups of them to local storage is something people are going to want to do. Spyware is not something I'd want to hook up for my aging parents who don't know how to stop that sort of thing.
Wow...Philo
I have to say your saying Philo wrong haha but it's okay :)
Philo as in philo farnsworth
ahhhh Philo , good ole days ...when i cut the cord about decade ago, i got Philo & was paying $15 a month that time for it, was beginning of Philo , had it for a year then i changed it to You tube TV & still having YTTV would NEVER changed it to other services Lovin it ...Philo is good, now is $10 increase , but is not complete , channels & feathers is missing thats why is cheaper so NO DUH, is good for people in budget or beginners also Fridly TV is another one..hahahah u call it Feeelo is PHILO
You're pronouncing Philo wrong, It's pronounce Fai -Low
Also have better crime shows❤
Looks like a good way to "unFox" your cable box.
Better yet to unCNN it.
@@JT-st9yj Ok, you're a maga. Now we all know.
It`s Philo, Not Phelo.
I like Frndly better and it's cheaper. 😊
Philo
I’m 16 years old. And philo really needs to add the Disney channels
Philo kinda reminds me of Netflix... will start off good and strong... then greed will take over... Just WATCH.
pheelo
So Philo is a collection of all of the channels I never watch! 😆. I’m looking forward to ESPN being fully streamed when it inevitably leaves cable.
With how it's being streamed on Hulu, good luck 😂😂😂
Then don't get Philo. Simple as that. The service is not for those who are into sports.
That's gonna cost you about $30 a month for ESPN.
They charge u a dollar for the free one I just talked to my bank and Philip lies
So it’s all the channels I remember were good but are now cheap reality show havens.
Ph EYE lo EYE
No bravo

Second!
No sports or Fox News? Oh no!
...anyway.
Lol always sling..
It's a feature, not a bug.
Lol Philo budget? It's 25 bux
It's cheaper than slingtv. $40 for either just orange or just blue or $55 if you going for orange and blue bundled
Philo is The best $10 I spend monthly
I look forward to watching your next sponsored Plex video. Could you do me a favor and ask Keith Valory the next time you talk to him what he did with the three leftover hot dogs that he most likely had left over when he fired the 37 employees right before independence day because the ad market is drying up and his consumers are tired of paying for the service that he decided to inject ads into. I'm assuming he bought five packs of ballparks so they would all have a hot dog as a going away meal. You should be able to triple your sponsorship price since he is saving so much money now.
