As the partner of someone who sometimes drinks heavily to numb the pain of trauma, I can picture this moment so clearly in my mind. For me I would interpret that as someone who has stumbled home drunk as a skunk, standing in front of you trying to act like they’re fine, smoking a cigarette with a mouth full of blood from copping a punch in the face back at the bar. Or maybe they’ve had a fall on the way home and smashed their face on the ground. Then Zach says ‘but you’re home somehow’ and I know that feeling of standing there staring at this person you love, who has completely written themself off once again, and they’re in such a state that it seems a miracle they even found their way home at all. Maybe Zach wrote this about a memory of one of his parents coming home a huge mess when he was younger and he’s reflecting on that now that he’s grown up and finding his own way in the world.
