I feel like the song is about time being fleeting, growing older and not acknowledging it until revisiting old haunts. He went back to an old watering hole and on the way saw relics of the past. His actions while out were those of his youth. It took him 28 years to realize what it felt like to no longer feel young.
Iv noticed this exact fear in a lot of his songs. Someday. Ticking and a few more I can’t think of now.

As a 17 year old who turns 18 in 9 days almost I cant describe this fear in words but this song reminds me of it but its so good it just makes me so sad that I am gonna be an adult and soon have to leave my family
I interpreted the smoke line as after a bar fight where he’s smoking and bleeding since the next line said “but you’re home somehow”. So he got in a fight, his mouth is bleeding and he’s smoking after and made it home
i agree. My take is the same but when he says “we’re home somehow” maybe that makes him feel at home. That feeling

I listened to this video weeks ago but I found myself thinking about you asking what we thought that line ‘there’s smoke seeping out of your bloody teeth but you’re home somehow’ might mean. As the partner of someone who sometimes drinks heavily to numb the pain of trauma, I can picture this moment so clearly in my mind. For me I would interpret that as someone who has stumbled home drunk as a skunk, standing in front of you trying to act like they’re fine, smoking a cigarette with a mouth full of blood from copping a punch in the face back at the bar. Or maybe they’ve had a fall on the way home and smashed their face on the ground. Then Zach says ‘but you’re home somehow’ and I know that feeling of standing there staring at this person you love, who has completely written themself off once again, and they’re in such a state that it seems a miracle they even found their way home at all. Maybe Zach wrote this about a memory of one of his parents coming home a huge mess when he was younger and he’s reflecting on that now that he’s grown up and finding his own way in the world.

I think the phrase were home somehow, Zach is suggesting a sense of belonging or peace,admist the chaos. Smoke and bloody teeth maybe represent the state of turmoil. I think because this song came out when he was going through all that stuff when Boston their dog had a major surgery, he was just starting the first leg of his tour I think, it was a chaotic time for him and Brianna. 🤷🏼♀️
He’s always mentioning getting into bar fights in the city, maybe he just came home to the woman from a bar fight and is smoking a cigarette. Also the next line “But you’re home somehow”, like you mentioned he always feels lost in the city.

I think when he says smoke sipping out of your bloody teeth but you are home somehow, means that even though she’s in a cold place with that smoking breath cause of the coldness she feels at home, and because she feels at home he feels that he’s at home too, because she feels like home
This song reminds me of "Hometown" by Witt Lowry. Fairly underground but kind of known rapper, but makes great music, especially his last album. I'd recommend at least giving that one a listen.
