He was a Benedictine monk theologian, and archbishop of Mainz in Germany.. The Latin text was originally sung as a Gregorian Chant. The hymn is an invocation of the Holy Spirit during the liturgical celebration of the feast of Pentecost. The hymn is also widely used in the Ordination of Priests and Bishops, the sacrament of Confirmation, as well as the dedication of churches and religious institutions.
