I'll never forget the first time I heard this song live, at a gig in Antioch back in 1123. Good times.
At the castle Aaaaagh.... i was there too.
All the 1100's kids remember
I was there too i was drinking beer with the king and queen
Yeh me too my favourite bard lol
Were you the one in the multi colour pantaloons eating the leg of mutton?
Imagine chilling in a tavern in skyrim and this starts playing
My wife plays FF14 and there's a dude who made a bard. Just so he could max out the music skills and play popular music. Just like this channel.

It's almost as if Metallica covered this version. Goosebumps man 👌
Only took a few centuries....
@@WellImThatGuy And by hitting pebbles of different sizes between them, does it make you go back in time even more 🙉
Them: "What kind of music do you like?"
Me: " 'Tis a bit of a quandary."
Underrated comment.
"I dub thee unforgiven". Even Metallica knew this cover would be done some day.
except he plays: "I dub thee unforgiv" which annoys me a little bit.
@@glp.1337 it's because it's pronounced as "unforgiv'n"
@@TheSignatureK Right? So why doesn't he play "unforgiv'n" instead of "unforgiv"?
Why does Metallica fit this style so well
Theres an orchestra band that covers their songs too. Also see Gabriela and Rodrigo
The original version almost sounds medieval. All three parts should be done
Because, while lacking proper music theory education, their composition style leans heavily into classical scales. They sound great with orchestral accompaniment too, check out their live album "S&M"
Music theory is not necessary, in fact not knowing it may lead to greater creativity and originality
Iron Horse also did bluegrass covers of like 20 Metallica songs. It's great
This is what Aragorn was listening to in the corner of The Prancing Pony
Truly a testament to Metallica's composing at the time. When you can do something like this and it translates like it was meant for it, melodies that touch thy soul.
Agreed. I think this is exactly why Symphony and Metallica was so awesome as well.
@@Valyn And why Apocalyptica's covers also work so well!
The first time I saw Metallica was at a party and Temecula California and they were playing in somebody's freaking backyard. This was long before garage days and I knew in an instant that they were special
Metallica does a cover of this. It’s OK.
That's funny thank you for your humor.
Comment of the day🎯
I'm amazed at Metallica's passion for bringing historical music with a modern twist. Inspirational

*sits on horse and weeps*
To me this sounds more like the melody of a prince shamefully traveling home after losing most of his men in battle. No glory, no spoils of war, unforgiven.
And then you hear la ilaha ilalah allah hu akbar from behind the mountains with marching sounds and run away.
i knew this was gonna be awesome, but dayum... these should in all seriousness be used in medieval movies or something. how awesome would it be to have period music, sort of, but metal in battle scenes? this guy deserves way more subscribers, absolutely amazing.

New songs, old instruments.
It makes me realize that if these instruments were commonplace hundreds of years ago, then people playing them skillfully and collaboratively must have made melodies like these with them. How many such tunes must we have lost to the centuries? Countless no doubt.
But hearing this one I can imagine what it was like to be there, in the corner of a smoky room, where a troupe of itinerant troubadours would regale the peasants with news from afar, stories, and music.
I can imagine what it was like to be there... and I can imagine what it was like to be them. They weren't much different from you and I, just born with different ressources and technology.
I've always fantasized about taking one of them on a tour of our world. Of showing them all the marvelous things we discovered, invented, and built; Of showing them how the windmills transmit their power to copper wires and light up my apartment; How freshwater is pumped through pipes, and wastewater collected; How my computer beams information to satellites hurled around the earth at a speed matching gravity.
And in a way, I can.
Because they were homo sapiens, just like me. We are what they were.
My story is a continuation of their story. All the wonders I experience now, they experience them through us, in a way.
🤡
If you are over 30 you'd already be dead back then 🤔😂
@@gen-xboomer9489 nope. Child mortality was high, but tnose that survived their teens could expect to live to their 60s, though half of them probably died due to war, starvation, diseases, or accidents. Still, there were enough people who saw their grand children and a few even their great grandchildren...
The problem is that music sheets were only invented many centuries after writing was... Food recipes survive longer, but even they were rather inprecise as making tutorials was an evolving skill. The same goes for noting down music...
How high are you right now ?
Metallica is VERY classically based , James Hatfield is trained in classical composition and it shows through most of their songs, but to transcribe one Metallica song to a instrument that it was not originally intended for is an accomplishment in itself, but this ARTIST has transcribed it across multiple instruments and wow , it just makes what was a already beautiful melody into something 100x greater, congratulations for all your efforts, this piece is absolutely amazing

I'm sure this would be a freakin musical success back then
tis unnatural to be so heavenly, best burn them so thy pain, might liberate them of any demons doing the playing of such music. tis what's best for them, it is.

What's so cool about this is that this is a headspace. When a lot of us were kids, these songs were on the radio at the same time we were playing D&D or reading our modules. Our minds were already here, and hearing these tracks done like this feels so natural.
Your music is truly exceptional.

I was thinking the same thing, but in truth they'd probably not be onboard, just because it's too far out there for the period. With that said, I'm sure a few medieval peasants would buy into it.

This song has always had a medieval Celtic sound to my ears, and now someone has made it reality.
I hope everyone out there read "Keltic", not "Seltic" as the former is correct pronunciation.
"You see painting of that legendary knight there? He wasn't born a knight. Far from it. There was a time when no one recognizes him; he was only another innocent child waited to be slain in this cruel cold world. He lost his parents in a very young age, no other warrior trainee can understand him. He almost drink himself to death. But he never stops and drown in it; he fought it out. He fought wholeheartedly, win so many, and lost some too. And in the process, he became the legend that other knight respected, adored by so many as their savior and patron.
And that, young warrior, is why now he is a legend. That is the way of the knight. The way of warrior.
The way of Metal."
I will always prefer the one who put himself out there, playing actual instruments and proving he is the actual author of the video, to the ones who hide themselves behind an image more or less related to the content of the video; good job bard.
This was the best pre- black plague Metallica album.

This is the coolest thing I have ever discovered! I've been a huge Metallica fan since middle school (now I'm 40). I think this did Metallica proud!
Medieval eargasm. Splendid
New blood joins this Earth
And quickly he's subdued
Through constant pained disgrace
The young boy learns their rules
With time the child draws in
This whipping boy done wrong
Deprived of all his thoughts
The young man struggles on and on, he's known
Ooh, a vow unto his own
That never from this day
His will they'll take away
What I've felt, what I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
Never be, never see
Won't see what might have been
What I've felt, what I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
Never free, never me
So I dub thee unforgiven
They dedicate their lives
To running all of his
He tries to please them all
This bitter man he is
Throughout his life the same
He's battled constantly
This fight he cannot win
A tired man they see no longer cares
The old man then prepares
To die regretfully
That old man here is me
What I've felt, what I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
Never be, never see
Won't see what might have been
What I've felt, what I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
Never free, never me
So I dub thee unforgiven
What I've felt, what I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
Never be, never see
Won't see what might have been
What I've felt, what I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
Never free, never me
So I dub thee unforgiven
Oh-ooh-oh
Never free, never me
So I dub thee unforgiven
You labeled me, I'll label you
So I dub thee unforgiven
Never free, never me
So I dub thee unforgiven
You labeled me, I'll label you
So I dub thee unforgiven
Never free, never me
So I dub thee unforgiven
This is that kind of pureness this world needs so desperately
You know something is done good when you can feel like this actually could've been played back in medieval times. Well freaking done!
100% captured James's voice in that flute. Absolutely perfect
Listening to this in 1340s London.
Rings so true😢
Incredible work man, this really retains the emotional tone of the song. It always amazes me how natural these songs sound in this style. Reminds me that across time periods, we're still human and beauty is still beauty. You connect past and present for us in the way that all great bards should. Keep up the amazing work!
He deserves 100 million followers.
They used to play this back in the day at the colosseum when a slave beat the best of the best gladiators and was granted freedom by the emperor. It was just as hard back then. Respect 🤘🏼
This way, it sounds better, there is more richness to the sound and the atmosphere of composition is elevated thanks to this. Distortion posing only tramples on the composition quality.
What can I say except "THANK YOU!!!"? You've just given one of the most beautiful songs ever created a lifting. AMAZING!!!

@@orcatwar9810 They both have the same melody right? After Algal transforms it, you might not even be able to tell which it was.

Grog in thy Flask
How does a heavy metal band create such beautiful melodies.
the melody was always there, its what drew people to the song to begin with. its just that when pulled out of the trappings of a specific genre you can see that a melody is more than just something that sounds good on a specific set of instruments, it is itself a thing to be admired, music is more than the instruments that make it, there is something primal and ethereal about good music that trancends any one set of rules of how to play it, or cultural set of tools with which to make it.
By being creative. Heavy metal, trash, or death metal all have the potential to create the most beautiful and extravagant harmonies. They just need to have an open mind to find them.
@@patrickcrabb6212 that’s one of the reasons I love heavy metal. And why I tend to gravitate toward symphonic and progressive personally.

Fitting for the day.
I can imagine this back in the middle ages, a bunch of minstrels playing this lament, next to th emay pole, nearby there is the stocks waiting for a malefactor to punish.
scruffy urchins playing with bones in the gutter, the local hostelry throwing out a drunkard, a rich couple stroll by. The locals are taking notice of this song now!
That's how Hollywood would portray it. But this has been amazingly realised on authentic medieval instruments. Without the temptation of doing the lyrics.
Well done!

As always, the format gets stolen. 5 months ago, as if it were a coalition, several medieval cover channels have appeared on RUclips, but I'll never forget who started it all. As always, the guy who puts a lot of effort gets the least recognition. You're actually playin accurate instruments rahter than midi bases, creating videos rather than using a single pic.
