    I think you are right about the air being able to "get in" for the cell to work. Having the carbon tube too wet would probably drown the zinc air reaction. Maybe when charging the cell you are also releasing oxygen (from water splitting) which then adds to the cells performance? Thanks for posting this.

    I also followed caryex design but use an activated carbon air filter (foam like) instead of felt as I don't have one, he said that in his design he get around 300~mA of current. I get only 10mA, was that to be expected? Also what are the variables that affect the output current of the cell?
