Cool!
Excellent, Im impressed with the way you've measured performance. I will keep watching
why zinc and not some other metal?
@@NwoDispatcher The zinc-iodine battery works based on the chemical conversion reaction of I2 cathode and the deposition/stripping reaction of Zn anode. Specifically, during the discharging process, I2 gets electrons and is reduced to I−, while Zn loses electrons and is oxidized to Zn2+, i.e., the stripping process of Zn.
Very interesting
Of Course: Add Thorium, Tritium, Deuterium in An Ermetically, Small, Very Confined Space!
Total run time was 5 hour and 5 minutes 256 milli amp hours. 325 milli watt hours average voltage 1.27 volts.
The carbon felt is a4 size not a3.
nice work there man quite impressive. for anyone who's dabbled in this area knows this is a lot of work and really takes a lot of desire and passion for something that we can all just go to the store and buy and seems totally pointless to most people. they don't get it. This guy gets it though. energy is power people. energy is power.
So much missing in this video!!!! How did you coat the carbon felt why does the Nick coating look like its powder ?! Why is there a guge bolt sticking out of the pipe is it SS or galvanized (zink coated ) iron bolt or dud you strip the galvanizing off of it .......
@@michaelvaughn7137 the bolts are nickel coated and the carbon felt is nickel coated. The nickel coating is done in vinegar and 2 nickel plates. I guess I’ll make a nickel plating video to show. I’ll try to make it this week.
Very interesting. Great video
شكرا لك . وحضا موفقا .
Good stuff Dan!
Thanks for the video. I'm curious why you need to add nickel hydroxide. Is that necessary, and where did you purchase it? Thanks.
@@benjaminwilliams9629 nickel hydroxide is the positive electrodes active material it converts to nickel oxy hydroxide when charged. In the nickel iron play list is how to make nickel hydroxide. Be safe if making it. Do not inhale nickel dust.
@@danp1224 Thanks
Hi Dan, I watched with great interest your frankenmill creation, it really started my own creative engineering juices flowing. I immediately saw the endless possible improvements and modifications that could be implemented. As soon as I saw your creation I though that it cried out to be mounted vertically onto a heavy steel plate L-shaped angle frame with motorised lift to the cross table/knee! I look forward to following your progress, well done and keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing this interesting video.
عمل جيد وشكرا علي بحثك ومجهودك وايصالك للمعلومة للجميع . من اين يباع لباد الكربون او لباد الجرافيت . وشكرا

Good to see you back, hope your feeling loads better.
Looks like the passivate failed ! I found it important that the passivate is 35 degree celcius or more
what is the highest energy density (in Wh/m^2) of your single cell nickel-iron battery, sir?
@@abdiseptiaputra hi. About 19 watt hours kg. With more mass on the cell it could be higher.
@@danp1224 I'm sorry, but what is the weight of your nickel-iron cell battery sir? or the total discharge energy? I want to compare with my project.
@@abdiseptiaputra 9.5 grams run time 5 hours at 30 milli amp load. 190 milli watt hours.
@@danp1224 thank you for your replies, sir. What about the capacity retention of the 39th charge-discharge cycles you said? I saw your other video, you use iron oxides and nickel oxy hydroxides powder as electrode material, is it better than using nickel or iron plate as electrode?
@@abdiseptiaputra yep way better then plates.
Maybe the tool was flawed from factory? Loosing the extra might have been you fix by the sound of it
I think you’re right. It always had a knock when rotating. It was my first time with a dovetail cutter.
I honestly haven't got into machining yet due to the expense of metal lathes and mills, so I could be wrong. But based on my research and other crafts I do, I reckon it's probably worth making a jig to hold a micrometer and tool bits to check their accuracy and find any factory flaws before you use them. Up to you
I also followed caryex design but use an activated carbon air filter (foam like) instead of felt as I don't have one, he said that in his design he get around 300~mA of current. I get only 10mA, was that to be expected? Also what are the variables that affect the output current of the cell?
How did you make this?
Get some carbon any-type(fish filter) crush it. Mix up some cornstarch with water on a stove. It needs to be hot enough to form the polymer then add the cornstarch to the carbon and pack a tube with the mixture the heat as hot as you can go with a furnace or fire but you need to keep the air away from the carbon. Put it in a tin and cover with charcoal
@@danp1224 alright thanks! seems I can't do it with what I have right now

What's going on there Dan?
Cleaning up that edge. It’s going to be a dovetail slide base for mounting onto the mini
great
*Putting a layer of Manganese dioxide under the carbon felt would have doubled your power duration and amperage. Manganese cathodes can absorb 2 Zinc ions while carbon can only take in one.*
I just started looking into zinc-iodine cells myself, and i have basically no idea what i am doing yet, trying to figure out the best way to even source the iodine is still eluding me, i tried just basic 10% medical iodine solution and the amperage was rapidly dropping so fast in my crude testing methods, so i really appreciate you sharing your work, thank you!
Hi Dan. Interesting cell. l thought it would do better " bit dissapointing for you". thanks for sharing.
I think at the start I may have over plated zinc and blocked the cell from the start. I’ll give it another go sometime. I’m think of trying nickel iron cells next.
I've heard that heavy denim makes the best carbon felt.
What is it and what's it for?
It’s a flow battery. That may or not work well.
Your problem is the pump pressure is not enough. once the steam pressure comes up the pump can't supply against it and the water flow drops. You need a higher pressure pump than the steam output you want. Also you could give the burner more air but you have to throttle it up and get the burner glowing. The fact it ran so long after you shut the oil off meant there was a LOT of oil pooled in the burner which is not what you want. Keep the burn chamber red and you should be able to shut off the oil and see the flame drop within 1 Minute if not 30 Sec, If it's burning longer than that you have too cold a bruner and too much oil flow for the air you are giving it. these things are best run hard. I'd like to see how you are progressing with this.
The pump was advertised as 100 psi but that’s at it rated voltage not through the speed controller at half value.
Some oil in the burner at startup will help get it lit faster. this will come up in a couple of minutes if you give it more oil and air. Your design layout is good. Oil consumption is directly related to heat output. People seem to think these things are like a car and can be more efficient but not the case. Running the glowing is where you want to be. You can back the air down with the fuel to get a greater turndown ratio but they will have a happy place depending on the inlet size with air speed as well as the chamber size. If you want to run this stand alone or for hours, use a pump and a timer. I run mine all day and night to heat the house and the timer / pump keep it constant wherever I set it. At 1L of oil in 30 Min you were producing about 20KWh. Getting below 1L an hour is difficult. A pump allows you to measure flow and from there you can work out how many seconds min pumping you need and set the output. You have set this out very well.
Great job! yes, the hotter it gets the more oil it guzzles and that is a pretty powerful setup you have there. Oil burner the aussie guy had such a setup and managed 600 kilowatts! All he had was a bigger blower!
You could hook up an oil barrel as a hot water storage container. 45 imperial gallons of boiling water in no time, if the tank were insulated you could have hot water for at least 3 days.😂
You are only getting about 2-3 kilowatts of burn power there at the drip rate you have. The pipe from the blower does not need to be reduced, just a straight pipe from blower to furnace with the drip tube as it is. Yes you could do with a more adjustable valve. The blower is good for around 30 kilowatts so should be plenty. You don't need the petrol blower. 10 kilowatts for every litre per hour burned is an approximate for these systems.
nice work mate
ME GUSTÓ MUCHO!!!
The long pipe is too small and it needs more oil
Should I try 60 mm diameter pipe.
Just a pipe the same diameter as the blower, you don't need to worry about atomizing the fuel and in anycase you won't be able to do it with the electric blower even the leaf blower won't but you don't need to worry about it. :)@@danp1224
I'm doing the same, what's your best electrode combination.
Graphite plate and carbon felt. I’m at 34 charges and discharges it’s now 298 milli amp hours and 280 milli watt hours.
@danp1224 I've had good results with that. My main problem is trying to stop self discharge rate. I'm going to try fumed silica to make a gel. If that doesn't work then may need to think of a mechanical solution.
@@DrBretPalmer I’m thinking a flow cell could solve the self discharge by draining the cell chamber when not in use.
@danp1224 the large flow cells use large tanks to move the fluid. I'm unsure about howxI could build plates to extract the energy. Also more moving parts. It is a tricky one to sort out.
Great work - I appreciate the efforts and research! - nice keyboard btw lol
So, electrolyte stirring yields best results? - a stirrer?
Maybe not. It’s at 30 charges now and I’ve not stirred it. It’s running for 5 hours 30 minutes now. 50 milli amp load.
@@danp1224 Very impressive - please keep us posted, I love this kind of stuff

Careful, if you produce too much power, you might make the " *PERFECT* "cell sorry I felt like I needed to
nicely done! Have you 'flame tested' the carbon felt you've made?
No.

Good one Dan . I am interested in doing a iodine zinc cell soon . Should be interesting . I am trying to find terracotta tiles but flat sections but I might just have to use pots .
Get a long rectangular terracotta pot and cut the tiles from long side. That what I may end up doing. This cell would be better like a one liquid flow cell.
@@danp1224 good idea. For some reason I just kept thinking their only was the round ones
