As a help to folks who have little/no sewing experience, maybe using an iron to get that fabric folded and securely measured before you start with the machine can make things a little easier. Just test the heat of the iron on a small piece first to make sure it's not hot enough to melt it!

I watched, immediately subscribed, and after THIS video, finally took the leap towards my first hammock. I've got 4yds of 1.9, a spool of Gutermann 70, and a few 25ft lengths of Zing-it and Amsteel coming from Ripstopbytheroll. I still don't have any suspension, but Ripstop shipped my order within hours of me placing it, so I'll be facing down the barrel of a Singer very soon! I love your channel. Keep up the fantastic job. I have to binge-watch YOUR channel now! :D

Oh my gosh-you do your gathered exactly like i do. The seam is non structural so you dont need fancy thread and tripple runs. Good stuff. I also make my own suspension SYSTEM. currantly checking it all out at queenstown for 3 months of camping
Hi:) I'm on ripstop's website, and want to order the 1.9 nylon, but I'm having a hard time to find out how to choose the length of the material. It says you need to choose in yards, and that's fine, but how do you choose the length??
i just made one... didn't even bother hemming it. just gathered the ends, kept it tight, turned ends, used my thin nylon webbing, with a sheet bend, then whipped the ends and that was it !
Do you feel like you’re packing more or less gear to use a hammock vs tent? Hammock still seems like you need a lot of gear: hammock, tarp, underquilt, straps, sleeping bag... I’m liking the idea of using a hammock. Just not sure if a tent would require less to pack (?)
I think less with the hammock in most instances. In some of my videos (including my last adventure in panama city) I show just how small my hammock/tarp/lines/straps/bugnet get and it's quite small and light. I have a pretty decent ultralight backpacking tent (tarptent contrail) and the hammock setup is a bit smaller. But there are other advantages and reasons I take a hammock over a tent, even if the hammock was larger to pack.

Absolutely, I would like to see a DIY 9x9 tarp shelter. Possibly something with sewn in tie-out points.

Hey trip. With the way you’ve made the hammock, double layering the bottom to cut wind and keep warmth, what would you suggest using?
I guess the same material. I think that's how double layer hammocks are made.... Other than that a seperate underquilt would be my suggestion.

Ummmm, I think it does yes. You should be sure you are using a high quality thread.

You can but 4 yards and have enough for a hammock. I think 11' is a good lenght for most people. I think mine is using 10.5' of fabric.....

I just had a crazy idea. I'm a big fan of Tyvak and have made multiple items from it. What about a hammock out of Tyvak, ultra light, and sturdy?
Give it a try, but I don't think Tyvek is meant to be load bearing and would most likely rip.

Why can't the gathered end be a loop of cordage running through the fabric, then attach to tree rope rather than gathering and running it around?
