Hey Ben - 3 weeks later and the dead keep playing and yes the world is still spinning and hopefully in the morning the sun will shine...but either way it will be a great day. Peace and love to all of you from Mt Hood Oregon
You prolly dont give a shit but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times you can watch pretty much all of the new movies on Instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my girlfriend for the last couple of days =)
The year of the SUGAREE! The year of grateful perfection. Though they started to finally jam a little on this tune in 1976. This was the year that it fully blossomed and this is a great example.
+Jeff Felderman u and I have had wonderful music experiences directly tied to the GD. I was 26 years old in 1976....never heard this recording till recently!! finally had my marbles working FOR NOT AGAINST me by '76. had been home from my last hippie days in California for five years - but could not stand to hear the GD because of the painful experiences i had to have at the end of my hippiedom. (drug and social problems), it was just easier without the memories. that was then. Now I need to have the memories because they are a way to keep me teachable. love to u Jeff for your grateful perfection quote. they are, were and always will be PERFECT!
+sunshinenblues Yes indeed. I turned 21 that year and first saw them at Woodstock when I was 14. Deadhead for life is an understatement. Hope things are grateful for you in the future.
Love this version but to me it's a distant third to The Fox (5/19/77) a few weeks later and then Pembroke (5/22/77). Those two build on this one and Jerry is at his absolute best.
To me, the absolute pinnacle is 5/28/77 though all three you guys mentioned are incredible too...if you haven't seen the one I'm talking about, do yourself a favor
Hats off to the videographer, who alternates between closeups of a perfect yellow rose and Jerry's captivating smile, a slow-mo view of Earth from space and a slow pan of the band, .... This guy seems to be exploring possibilities much as the Dead were always exploring possibilities; what new sounds could they create? ("Searching for the sound"). Magnificent! Thank you.
@@chasefukuoka61 You did a magnificent job! I was captivated, transported to that magical place where there's wonder in life and joy of being (all without drugs -- I like my natural state). Thank you for this gift. You are quite special.
finally found a good version of sugaree...always some of the best guitar solo playing on this song, omg yesssss niiiiiiiiiiiice my favorite guitarist right here so mellow
i so agree~ almost cried first time i heard it. now i just space out a little and the slideshow is inspired! remember i met all the artists personally..Grace Slick, Janis J., and of course the Grateful Dead. in 1968-1969. what a wonderful time to live for some of us. others, not so much. i ponder the "why?" often, because the '60's were a smorgasboard of eventful experiences and i really got lucky!!
love love love a stretched out sugaree, and thanx for the excellent graphics! 77 gave us cornell, englishtown and so much grate stuff, another in a long list of superstellar years of dead
This is so perfect it blows my mind. I love when they sync up so seamlessly and play like this. Insane. I just read a post about how overrated they are and I can't wrap my head around it. They are the most underrated band of all time.
1977 was an epic year for the dead if the recordings on youtube have anything to say. like seriously live but studio quality. incredible. hooked because of '77
Please fasten your seatbelt and sit back and enjoy the ride !! Please don't stand up till the bus comes to a complete stop . (The music never stops 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁)
@sunshinenblues Donna was with the band during the greatest period of the Dead. She and Kieth were huge additions to the group and they would not have been as great as they were without Donna or Kieth.
No, unfortunately. But there are a few CDs of May 1977 shows available if you search Amazon and other sites. Almost every night of that month they played magically. You can also hear the soundboards over at Live Archive. Search for "Grateful Dead May 1977 Live Archive"
@chasefukuoka61 failed to read the message you sent about Donna - thank you for all the head candy you upload, especially this version of Sugaree!!! i love it for all the right reasons
After exploring many of the shows here on RUclips, I can hear why '77 is a celebrated year. If only Bill were alone on drums, and Donna not singing, it would be perfect.
you know, i believe this was the BEST ever! ONE minute my heart is racing out of the universe, the next i feel like kissing and doing it! just PERFECT!!!
i have this amazing version of sugaree from someday in may 1977...i gotta find the CD to remember exactly what date it was...but his guitar sounds like a mandolin, so nice
@crusher153 - hi, yeah, definitely. In some sense much of the seventies were like a gorgeous mountain range, with hills, valleys and gorgeous rising performances jutting up all over the place... Then the drugs became a problem in the 80s, the peaks still there just not quite the same... I think they all got a bit burned out, esp Jerry. He really aged from 1979 to 1983...
On the way back from after a Eugene OR Dead show our friend Jack Presley played this on his car stereo while he drove and I was in the back seat secretly making out with Teresa and trying to keep it from the general public, on I-5 going north. We all liked this performance a lot
@chasefukuoka61 i have to agree with you on the whole peaking in 77 thing. you listen to the concerts from this time and they sound awesome. i think they peaked in 71 (with pigpen) too. listen to the hollywood palladium august 6th. every track is on the money.
@sunshinenblues - Check out the music I've uploaded from 1977, she adds some really nice harmonies on quite a few songs. Not much more to say, imo, the music speaks for itself.
Best Sugaree I've ever heard. Anyone else know of one in this category please let me know. Saw this show and 5 years earlier heard them do it for the first time in the Yale Bowl. New Haven was rocking in the 1970's.
Now just imagine how great this would be if they had a good lead guitar player who didn’t “noodle endlessly.” Dammit, jerry! Why couldnt you just be like everyone else and crank up the volume and gain and feign concentration while playing pentatonic licks and dancing around the stage like complete idiot
This is the prettiest song they ever did! I love listening first thing in the day...it invites my soul to celebrate!
+sunshinenblues Me too! Good morning from Sweden! It's already a beautiful day!
wow, Sweden is one VERYCOOL place-lucky you....Northern Cal. is as far as I've been - and the cruises to Caribbean!
hey miss sunshine... good morning from 3 yrs later.. the world keeps spinning and the dead keeps playing
Hey Ben - 3 weeks later and the dead keep playing and yes the world is still spinning and hopefully in the morning the sun will shine...but either way it will be a great day. Peace and love to all of you from Mt Hood Oregon
@@BenMas the music never stops , that is the only thing that has never changed , the True only thing that has not let me down in my life !!
i was a young guy when they played this--now i'm old and i'm still that same stupid young guy who loved every minute of it
You prolly dont give a shit but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times you can watch pretty much all of the new movies on Instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my girlfriend for the last couple of days =)
@Shane Forest yup, been using InstaFlixxer for since november myself =)

May there be many songs to fill the air in your future endeavors ✌💟😁 to you and yours !!!
This was my first ever Dead show...I was a freshman at CCSC and we drove down to see the show...19th row!
77 may be the best. Donna and Keith w/ their Southern Soul, Blues, Gospel influence turned jerry into a madman on guitar
jerry was always a madman on guitar, woot
best example of this would actually be 11/17/72, Keith and Jerry’s best show together ever imo, but long live 77
Only gets better and better as time goes on.
Shake it, Shake it Sugareeee
My favorite Sugaree and one of my all-time fave shows to listen to, top to bottom!
Love this version but to me it's a distant third to The Fox (5/19/77) a few weeks later and then Pembroke (5/22/77). Those two build on this one and Jerry is at his absolute best.

Try Rockpalast 1981. It was live on UK BBC radio, a rare event.

Thanks Barbara!! Yes, I was trying to express visually what the music is exploring...

Man 'o man some of the most serious Jerry jams in this....unbelievable at the 8:40 mark

Spring of 77 it all was flowing perfectly! They really hit their groove
I passed on the show like a fool.....My brother went. Raved about this "Sugaree " I did attend the Boston show two days later.

MUCHOS GARCIAS!!.....love that late `70's slinkiness to the druns on this one!
GRATE! Thank You!
I have not heard this in 20 years but I recall the Sugaree being mammoth.
this song directly led to my first girl/girl experience.... and it was everything delightful :))
tell us more lol
Nicely done!
When they come to take you down
When they bring that wagon around
When they come to call on you
And drag your poor body down
Just one thing I ask of you
There's just one thing for me
Please forget you knew my name
My darlin' Sugaree
Shake it, shake it Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me
Shake it, shake it Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me
You thought you was the cool fool
And never could do no wrong
Had everything sewn up tight
How come you lay awake all night long?
Just one thing I ask of you
There's just one thing for me
Please forget you knew my name
My darlin' Sugaree
Shake it, shake it Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me
Shake it, shake it Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me
You know, in spite of all you gained
You still had to stand out in the pouring rain
One last voice is calling you
And I guess it's time you go
Just one thing I ask of you
There's just one thing for me
Please forget you knew my name
My darlin' Sugaree
Shake it, shake it Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me
Shake it, shake it Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me
Shake it up now Sugaree
I'll meet you at the jubilee
And if that jubilee don't come
Baby, I'll meet you on the run
Just one thing I ask of you
Just one thing for me
Please forget you knew my name
My darlin' Sugaree
Shake it, shake it Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me
Shake it, shake it Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me
Shake it, shake it Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me
Shake it, shake it Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me

You don't know until you have experienced the versions from The Fox 5/19/77 and Pembroke Pines 5/22/77. Both on the tube (aud only).
