I think Sauropods nearly reached the physical limit of how big a terrestrial animal could get on Earth. I can't imagine any larger animals than them being physically possible I mean even they already strain the idea of what is possible with their insane proportions.
Their bones make them unique because the long neck and tail bones are large and spongy and hollow.
Honestly sauropods are my favorite species of dinos. Diplodocus is my favorite dino. I just think they are adorable in some way.
sauropods arent a species. they're a clade 🤦
They are chonkers

When it comes to weight, sauropods definitely rival whales as the heaviest and largest animals our world has seen.
When it comes to weight
Sauropod become "THE MOST EXTREME" 😎
No bruhatkayosaurus can reach 250 tons in weight
I am pretty sure the blue whale weights more
@@khandokarzamiurrahman1200 im not a paleontologist or a biologist but you have to realize that's impossible, there's no way any terrestrial animal could ever reach a weight like that
@@Dell-ol6hb bro how tall how long and how heavy can an animal get in the universe? please answer🙏
Sauropods are why I believe large theropods hunted in packs, or at least sometimes anyway
That or they just didn’t get hunted, with size being an adaptation to prevent being hunted.
Also helps to keep in mind that less than 5% of life will ever fossilize.
Who knows what predators were out there that might have been able to hunt some of the largest dinosaurs.
Abelasaurs were specialists in titanasaur hunting...but they hunted juveniles.
Think about this...one of the reasons that dinosaurs could get so big was because they laid eggs. For animals that lay eggs the larger you are the more eggs you can lay, meaning sauropods could have laid hundreds, their eggs were only soccer ball sized. If each sauropod could lay hundreds of eggs possibly multiple times per year, why are juveniles only 5% of fossils found? Now, obviously, smaller animals arent going to fossilize as well and will be harder to find, but that still is a tiny percent.
It's not exactly likely that sauropods engaged in parental care given how much they had to eat and how they ate. They laid eggs in large ditches they dug out with their back claws then covered them with dirt and rotting leaves similar to alligators. Then they'd leave them. The babies had to stay together in herds of their own for protection, and may have rejoined their parent herd when the parents came back around to the area where they laid the eggs, but it's unknown for sure, obviously.
mabye true mabye true
Those animals back then were like todays elephants, full grown adults had no predators i think.
Just like modern predators, there were probably 'lone wolf' theropods as well as pack hunters depending on the ecological niche they occupied.

@@communistcapitalist8971
Yeah they may be, overrated to many and some may just like them because of there size, sharp teeth, sharp claws, & there bipedalism. Which in turn makes them, more relatable to us humans, since were bipedal hunters. But for the few who like theropods beyond those traits like, myself because think about like this. All predatory animals especially apex predators are born, into the responsibility of keeping an, entire ecosystems in-check. Just look up what happened to “Yellow Stone National Park” once wolfs were reintroduced into the ecosystem. Also animals with carnivorous diets “usually” tend to be more, intelligent why you may ask? Because they, need brain power in order to understand how to take down another animals. Since unlike “most” plants 🌱 animals run away or fight back. So these predators have too understand how to take down there prey without hurting themselves. Those, are some of the reasons why theropods are, my favorite grouping of dinosaurs anyway.
PS What are is your favorite grouping of dinosaurs and why is that grouping your favorite? I’m honestly curious & like to know from one paleo-nerd to another. 😉 Mine is the SAVAGE-LIZARD!

I've read a lot on sauropod gigantism, the most convincing theory i have is based on the fact that sauropods don't waste their time chewing food, along with their broad neck movement capabilities, all allowed sauropods to take in a lot more calories daily than other vertebrates in history.
Baleen whales today don't chew their food, and with 1 good gulp they take in a lot more calories than an elephant takes in a day chewing their greens.
More calories allows bigger size.
There have been other herbivores that don't chew their food, but none had the broad angles of range that sauropods have for eating thanks to their neck. Most, like birds [herbivorous birds don't chew greens], lack 4 straight column like legs, which are great and requisite for large size.
Hornless rhinos, elephantidae and ornithopods all have/had a column like stance with 4 legs, and a pretty broad grazing range thanks to either their neck, bipedalism or their nose, but unfortunately all have weak stomach's, they can't handle tough vegetation without grinding the greens. Hornless rhinos had molars, elephantidae also have molars, some like mammoths and modern elephants have very specialized molars, and ornithopods had the most specialized dentition ever: the tooth battery. So these big herbivores spend a lot of time chewing while sauropods just spend more time swallowing and taking in more calories.

I swear he was gonna say “With great length, comes great responsibility”
“With great length, comes great responsibility”
Nice
Imagine...in todays world..we find 'freaks' in every species in remote places. That grow 'above the average' . Imagine a 'big boy' of of one of these giants!
Argentinosaurus could've actually reached 100 tons. It is theoretically possible for one of them to reach such a size. The only thing stopping them was how quickly they could eat.
The only reason those animals get bigger is because they don't have competition. Sauropods were beyond unchallenged, so it wouldn't apply.
Nothing today other than whales and massive sharks would compare though. Could you imagine seeing a dinosaur that large up close? It would be frightening to look at the sheer size. They would even dwarf a tractor trailer.
@@concept5631And environment, as they would need a lush tropical environment with plenty of large trees and plants they could feed upon. They would clearly need certain vegetation only found in rain forests and island countries probably,
@@ethanweeter2732 True.
Isn't there a sauropod now confirmed to be bigger then Argentinosaurus?

Your video came just after Mario lansaz Sauropod video 👍
Loving this video, thank you for posting. You just gained a new sub. Very good video.
Amazing creatures and a perfect example when nature goes to its limits
Just imagine feeling the ground shake when a 120 ton beast is walking towards you... Damn i wish i could time travel
Well, since we have drawings of dragons and dinosaurs, we probably would not need to travel as far back as we think,
This animal looks so vulnerable until it reaches huge size and I can't imagine them all living together, unless they're live births and already a considerable size.
I guess they could have possibly been only 11 pounds at birth, which is incredible when cattle are at least 60-70 lbs minimum when born at full gestation age.
@@ethanweeter2732 I have asked this everywhere... I don't understand how they were able to survive to maturity. They are so vulnerable to predators. I bet they had some pretty interesting behaviours. Alas, we will probably never know.
It's sad, they were actually extremely small at birth. Their parents also didn't raise them. Basically they had so many kids that at least a few would survive, but a vast majority died.
North.... I am relatively new to this channel. To say that I love it is an understatement!!! I am impressed with your knowledge of the subject matter. Again, thank you for this informative and educational experience. Ronald, Orlando FL.
Sauropods are my favorite group of dinosaurs 🦕🦕🦕
It's hard to fathom that such massive animals could really have existed. If we didn't have the fossils, probably no one would think it's even possible for a land animal to exceed 100 tons.
I cant believe this just now came up in my feed.🤨🤨🤨. Another great job tho.
Love your videos-the narration is perfect. However, In Latin words, and derivations, the primary accent on three-syllable words is the penultimate second from the end, an on four-syllable words is the antepenultimate-third from last. So Diplodicus is di PLO di cus. I know it can vary, especially if the penultimate vowel is heavy or light, but that regards words from Augustan-Age Rome, when sauropods, and our Greco-Latinate Linnaeogisms, were actually the least of anyone’s concerns.
"Isn't our part of the timeline lame" you say? If you live in a place long enough in a place with such a common that you would see it as too common, you'd wanna go out in the world for more & encourage your own excitement for it

Speaking of large animals, here is an interesting animal size fact for you:
Considering the Heffalumps and Woozles from Winnie the Pooh, least weasels are the smallest member of their order Carnivora while African bush elephants are the biggest of their own order Proboscidea! In other words, they are the smallest and largest members of their corresponding orders! Fun fact!
Some of your dino pronunciations aren't correct but very informative other than that well done.
Sauros are my favorites!!!! Thank you for featuring them, and the artwork here is AMAZING!!! 😍😍😍
I am terrified right now I just saw Ben G Thomas's video on the man who created dinosaurs and they were a LOT of creationists in the comment section claiming that dinosaurs are fake and that we should worship god and I'm like what has the human race come to

How often do you think they got struck by lightning
I am guessing, not a giraffe. So I am going to guess Anaconda with 15 meters.
Ok, so I guessed it was a snake, but I almost tripled it's length.
What is the name of the very large sauropod mentioned in this video a couple of times beginning with the letter "M"? Never heard of this genus before and want more info on it.
Maraapunisaurus ,its the second largest dinosaur species found behind Argentinasaurus.
@@19megamustaine85 argentinosaurus is a genus though, as is maraapunisaurus, they aren't species

@@19megamustaine85 basically, a genus is the taxonomic rank above species, so for a species, you’d name the genus first & species next, think tyrannosaurus rex or homo sapiens, tyrannosaurus or homo is the genus & rex or sapiens is the species. people usually name the genus only, like triceratops or edmontosaurus
Maraapunisaurus. It's just Amphicoelias, it got renamed.

My guess of largest terrestrial living animal: I Think it's the elephant with 3 ~ 4 meters in height and around 6 meters in length
Are you referring to Palaeoloxodon namadicus? Estimates for this elephant are in the low to mid 20s t. That is a third to a quarter the weight for the largest sauropds and nowhere near the height or length. It was a huge proboscidean no doubt but in the mid sauropod range as far as mass is concerned.
@@jamesaron1967 Don't know. I don't remember. But i was probably thinking in the african elephant.

Fun Fact : Brachytrachelopan is almost small as an common Living Pony
Sauropods are my favorite too I believe somewhere in the existence they probably were bigger
Who did the art at 6:22?
Our current time period is not that lame.
I'd choose living in current period rather that at a time when those giants was living in.
Why? Since large sauropods can mean large predators too. And coincidentally, I hate exercise. So I can't run. Hahahah.
A. Criticus
True , you have a chance of surviving a Tiger attack but an Allosaurus or T-rex ? Better not piss them off and if you did , a rifle is obligatory .
You forgot to mention that sauropods swallow gastroliths in order to digest their food.
The evidence on that is shady, they likely just had a very large strong stomach and who knows how their digestion worked.
The Anaconda, the Giraffe, or the Saltwater Crocodile could qualify as the longest terrestrial animal alive today.
80 tons?!
If sauropods were "smarter" and had better understanding of surroundings than they actually did, then they would be almost undefeatable
Considering a swing from their tail might take out many predators, not sure they had to be brilliant,
I think we will eventually find a sauropod that is so much larger than any other creature we have ever discovered and it will leave the world in in shock from just how big is really was. Potentially over 200 feet and easily over 100 tons
Well, there is the Broome titanosaur trackway in Australia that was made by a colossal sauropod. We don't know the actual weight of the animal but it was probably not far from your estimates, certainly more than any bones unearthed thus far. So, they did grow larger than current known specimens suggest.
Whales still get over 100 tons
36 meters is actually 127 ft long, since meters are 39 inches, not 36 inches like a yard.
Argentinasaurus was like 80 tons, so there almost certainly were individuals that reached 100 tons.
@@jamesaron1967The problem is it is really hard to get good estaments from tracks
It is called "Behemoth" in ancient times.
"Behemoth" ate grass and was good at hiding. Sauropods are trees and definitely couldn't hide very well.
Longest Terrestrial? I would think a salt water crock or a large Boa... maybe a giraffe if it stretched it’s neck out straight...
HA! Python. That’s great. I’m glad groovy snakes are getting a fun shout out.
I'm sure they had parental control, all animals protect their young.... It guarantee their legacy.... Idk, these would be the 1st animals in history to not protect their young... However, great video I enjoyed it as always ❤️
Well not all animals take care of there young like sea turtles, snakes, mice and bunch of other animals. They just have loads of kids and put little effort to care for them so that they will have a some what equal chance of having a somewhat equal amount of kids survive compared to an animal that ususally has little offspring and put loads of effort to care for them like large plecental mammals and humans. Though animals like mice dont do this for that exact reason, they do it as a method.
I can't imagine any terrestrial animal weighting more than 100 ton. I understand their massive size but something about all these estimates just seem wrong. The heaviest modern Elephant we've recorded was around 12 tons. I know we have extinct mammal fossils that are most likely larger but thought to be no more than 20 tons and thats being generous. a 100 ton animal or more would really be pushing the limits of what we know if physically possible. Unless Dinos were magic or there was less gravity 100,000,000 years ago.
Most modern weight estimates for the largest sauropods place them between 50 and 70 Tonnes. That sounds pretty reasonable.
2:06 name?
Yeah, I didn't quite understand what he said, I heard "bracunosaurus", but if I look that all I get is brachiosaurus
Although I love sauropod dinosaurs their weight is much exaggerated and they had hollow Bones which made them much lighter in comparison to What an elephant with thick Bones the same size as argentinosaurus could hypothetically have
I am pretty sure they take that into account when estimating the weight
2:37 it woudnt be that lame if those stoopid ooga booga monkeys didnt kill everything.
🦕👍
Longest terrestrial: I want to say Anaconda, but I know one snake is a little longer but like 1/3rd the weight.
Longest with a normal body plan: I want to say elephant or Saltwater crocodile.
Let's stick one of them pythons on top of an ellyphant, bam, instant sauropod.
All dinosaurs were non-avian. The "flying dinosaurs" are not dinosaurs. They are pterosaurs.
Non avian referees to birds not pterosaurs. The dinosaurs as a whole never went extinct because birds survive in the modern day. So no, all dinosaurs were not non avian. Avian dinosaurs appeared in the Jurassic.
I guessed Giraffe. Oh well
Diamontinasaurus
My guess for the longest animal today
Reticulate Python, just because that’s a fact I know, but don’t remember the length. I’m gonna guess....23 feet?

This is gonna sound weird but even in the bible, im pretty sure god describes "the behemoth" the king of all creations, it talks about his tail being like a whip, Behemoth, in the Old Testament, (Job 40:18).
It doesn't mention a whip tail, just having a strong tail.
sorry, his tail was like a cedar, and a fact about this dinosaur is they could crack their tails so fast they could produce sonic booms. got mixed up.@@AgroAcro
@@KEHflipMEDIA Also, the whip thing is disputed. They maybe could do it, but it almost certainly would cause extreme damage to the tail.
