Ask the locals about the "Love Canal" which drains into the Niagara River and all of it's toxins which causes the mist to be extremely toxic

I grew up south of Buffalo, roughly 70 or so miles from Niagara Falls proper, but would go there several times over the years. I've been to both sides many times. If you're talking about just the Falls itself, the Canadian side offers a much better view, whereas the American side you can get closer to the Falls overall. Cave of the Winds puts you directly between Niagara and Bridal Veil Falls, whereas Goat Island, Three Sisters Island, and Terrapin Point get you to the very edge of all three waterfalls. So from that perspective maybe the American side gets a slight edge. But if you're talking about all the things surrounding the actual Falls, it's difficult to put the American side ahead of the Canadian side. Clifton Hill is full of "touristy" things that are both good for families or an adult getaway. And even just off of Clifton Hill the rest of Niagara Falls, Ontario is a nice area. Niagara Falls, NY on the other hand looks like it could be the setting for an apocalyptic tv show or movie. But then just a short drive from Niagara Falls, Ontario is Niagara On The Lake, which is part of the wine region of Southern Ontario and has the feel of a quaint little town full of boutique shops and wineries. Lockport, NY however is a short drive from the American side of the Falls and offers cruises on the Erie Canal and through one of the most impressive systems of canal locks anywhere in the world, raising and lowering the ships that still traverse the canal 50 feet. And for family fun, I'd rather spend a day at Niagara Amusement Park on Grand Island, NY than at Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario. But to each their own. So to answer the question itself, I think it really depends on what you're looking for. Both sides have plenty to offer, the American side (more specifically the areas surrounding NF) might offer a bit more in terms of family entertainment, whereas the Canadian side might be a bit more adult oriented with some family activities available.

Having lived just outside of Buffalo for the majority of my life and visited the falls many times I would recommend the Canadian side if you can only do one. I haven't been to the surrounding area on the American side in decades and the food truck addition seemed cool. When I was a kid there was a bus pass that you could get on the Canadian side and stop at the butterfly conservancy and such as well as stops along the falls. The Canadian side also has a better winter festival and holiday decorations. Even now every time I see an ad on FB for something that sounds really cool in the falls it's invariably on the Canadian side. 🙄

We've heard that a lot! They were already advertising their holiday events when we were there in September and they looked so cool. That's awesome that you could get the bus pass and visit the butterfly conservancy! The food trucks were a nice touch on the US side... the Peruvian chicken was delish!!! Thanks for watching, guys!! -Katelyn

Having lived in Niagara Falls, Ontario area for a number of years (plus also originally not from Canada so I have had an unbiased opinion aswell) I would say the US side is the better side. That being said it's purely because I can't stand the craziness of Clifton Hill (sadly you didn't show that part) and much prefer the peacefulness of Goat Island anyday. Just a personal choice though and if anyone has kids I highly recommend Clifton Hill. Our kids always loved it there.

We also believe the USA side is much more immersive compared to Canada! Canada may have a more 360 view of the Falls, but you can really connect with the power of the waterfalls on the US side with Cave of the Winds!

They are both unique. I think the American side is more family-friendly, and cheaper, and the night views of the falls, from the observation deck cannot be beat. During the day, however, I think the views are better, on the Canadian side. Definitely, if you can, do both.

Having just visited Niagra this week July 2-4 2023. We chose the American side for several reasons. We didn’t have to go through customs and or aquire passports, we were able to stay in the Giacomo right beside the falls and had free gated parking and not only can you visit the American falls but you can also go to Goat island and see the horseshoe falls. In addition the cave of the winds and observation deck seemed better than any experience that was on Canadian side. Needless to say we loved it and can’t see anything we missed really by not going to the other side 🤷🏼‍♂️

Canadian side is great but very much commercialized. If you want a full on expensive dinner (pay a Niagara Falls tourist tax - look it up), go to Ripley’s believe it or not, Hersheys store, it’s a lot of fun, do it. If you want to sit and relax. Go to a park, go in the caves at the falls, NY is a home run side. The parks at NY make it just amazing.

One tip at Niagara Falls, the parking is outrageous expensive. Go park at the casino downtown. Walk into the casino and do some window shopping for 15 min. Then walk out and the falls on the American side is only about a quarter mile walk from the casino. The casino parking is free. You go into the casino so security sees you go in, they dont remember you going in so when you come out they don't know if you had a car or staying at the hotel. Also must see America's first state park on the lake Niagara Falls State Park. Not too far east is a small town whuch has a Erie Canal Discovery museum at the locks on the Erie Canal in the town of Lockport, NY. Great video!

Just got back from the falls Canadian side. Looks like things are really starting to change to become more modern. Even the Imax theatre that was in this video has been knocked down to make way for the new. Still needs a little more work, but I think in time things will get better. A great free attraction I found by foot (so people would probably pay for parking) is the Niagara Glen cliff hiking trails that lead down to the Niagara River and down and around the whirlpool. There is a map you should take a picture of next to the metal staircase down a few flights of stories to some great hiking trails and rock climbing (so I saw).

Actually there are Chipotle outlets in Toronto. My son’s absolute favourite.
I lived in Toronto until last March and made day trips and weekend outings to the falls countless times. It never gets old to me. The boat ride is the best, either side. The Canadian side has the better view as you can see the US side, but I like that the US side is more park like.
The Falls in winter is something else.

There are 14 Chipotle Mexican Grills in Ontario - 13 in the Toronto area. :-) As per what side, unfortunately you did not experience all of the attractions along the Canadian side up river on the way to the Niagara Parkway. When those are included, there is no doubt the Canadian side is far superior. Then there is the adjacent Niagara-on-the-Lake (one of the prettiest towns in Canada) and Niagara Wine Country with all it's beautiful (some very palatial) wineries. The cruise boat(s) on the Canadian side are called Hornblower. Maid-of-the-Mist had the contract on the Canadian side for decades but lost the contract when it came up for renewal.

agreed...I live here....so have experienced both sides....the American side is doable in one day...the Canadian side, you need a few days to experience it all.....the "naturalness" as well as the "commercial stuff) of the Niagara River is best experienced with a ride down the Niagara Parkway on the Canadian side,,,,drive down into NIagara on the Lake or up into Fort Erie....both ways are a spectacular drive....parking passes are available for longer durations....so now you have a reason to return!

Having grown up in Buffalo and having visited the Falls at least 50 times probably, since I used to work in Niagara Falls on the American side, the locals always tell tourists that the Canadian side is much better, so we are not biased. The Canadian side has more to do and see. By your video the US has stepped it up. We took the Canadian boat each time. In 1981 they had the old rubber rain coats. Having been to the American side three times, and the US side twice, Canada wins all day, every day. Not only did you not experience the boat ride, you skipped all of Clifton Hill and everything beyond. Restaurants, amusement centers, tons of hotels (even a bed & breakfast row), parks, zip lining, etc galore. You need to go back and experience the whole thing. The US side has almost no restaurants, zero amusement places (unless you count the casino), far fewer hotels (none actually on the falls), and the same one or two T-shirt sales people run the dozen or so shirt booths. I spoke to one of them who told me that. Also, the homes surrounding the park are nearly dilapidated. I feel bad for local residents, because there's so much potential.

Unquestionably the Canadian side is better as you have better view of both falls.

Live in Rochester, so have visited both sides many times. No favorite side as they both have multiple unique views. My single favorite spot is on the Canadian side where you stand right next to the edge (your “right here” moment). Travel safe.

@@NewstateNomads That was over 20 years ago, they may have phased it all out by now. I worked for Dayton Power and Light in Dayton Ohio. The downtown area used both AC and DC (mostly for the elevator systems) and some lighting and the trolley (bus) system used DC from overhead lines. This also may have changed by now. The old downtown water wheel was gone before I ever got there. They used large AC motors driving humongous DC Generators to provide the DC customers when I worked there.

If you had to pick only one, you can't go wrong with the Canadian side, if for no other reason it provides a better view of all of the falls.
That said, there is much to do on either side.

I use to think that the Canadian side was best, and then I became a tour guide giving tours on both sides. After doing the tour guide bit I decided that I fell in love more with the American side. The Canadian side is too commercial while more of the natural aspect is more preserved on the American side. Too bad you didn't get to enjoy the relaxing beauty of Three Sisters Islands on the American side. The observation deck on the American side is my favorite view of the Falls.

The cave of the winds is better than anything on the Canadian side, and the American boat goes a little closer to the falls. Also, the park on the American side is beautiful to walk through. But overall the Canadian side is much better. There's just way more to do on the Canada side and it isn't right next to a crime ridden ghetto.
