It’s actually pretty cool that while if you only have super sonic, sonic automatically transforms to normal and falls with the emerald and gets saved by tails after securing it, but if you unlocked hyper sonic, sonic secures the emerald and turns back when he decides to, which shows how this form is greater and how he also is more familiar with the emeralds now. Really cool touch for a game made so long ago.

I feel like the super sonic ending was the real cannon ending it showed we brought back the master emrald finally but at the very end it shows that we forgot some of the badniks and so in knuckles story we have to finish what sonic left behind and take down egg robo and the still surviving mecha sonic to get back the master emrald. I had no idea that the complete completion of S&K with Sonic is a teaser for Knuckles' story... and I recently noticed that in completely completing S3&K, the played character is in the middle. To me, that is the holy grail of the Sonic series, upgrading the Chaos Emeralds to Super Emeralds. I believe that Super Tails is only accessible after upgrading all the emeralds because he is not a playable character in S&K? And Knuckles is not a playable character in S3, where he is an adversary in the stand alone game, but he comes round in S&K, he goes different routes, but Super Knuckles is accessible. Activating the super and hyper forms of the characters helps with the later boss fights, though, which gives the perfect ending, with the three characters by the S3&K logo.

Yeah I'm late but the Super emeralds are technically canon in the universe, but the main part is that in Mania they are in like a lil broken state and grey, like they have no powers. I agree, now I think Hyper Sonic was...never meant to exist. Sonic 3 was originally a full game but split into two under time constraint. And then they created the Lock-On for Sonic & Knuckles to make the full game and Knuckles got his own story. Maybe all along, they wanted the ending with the Egg-Robo to be the true ending to tie in with Knuckles and perhaps Hyper Sonic was just a bonus? Kirby has these kind of things too where there's a bonus final boss that takes place outside of the timeline, so maybe this is the case for Sonic 3? Hyper Sonic just doesn't happen at all?
I think it would have made sense to have Sonic 3 (without S&K) say "TO BE CONTINUED" at the end of the credits when you get all of the Chaos Emeralds. (Otherwise it would just say "TRY AGAIN" as usual.) Just displaying the game's title art, along with the characters in triumphant poses, gives the impression that Sonic 3 is over, when it's really only half over.
I mean, if you were the developers trying to make a deadline and had to split your game up - would you do anything that would expose that it was unfinished?
It's quite an aspect that the chaos emeralds and super emeralds determine the ending. For example, if you don't collect any emeralds Sonic and Tails failed to return the Master Emerald to Angel Island. And when you do collect them, you get either the good ending or the best ending. Really like the detail they added, and not that the chaos emeralds are just optional to obtain.

Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles are different games. But, you can plug Sonic 3 in the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge and play both together and get Sonic 3 & Knuckles
sonic 3 was originally meant to be sonic 3 + sonic & knuckles as one game, but during development they couldn't finish the latter half of the game on time so they released the first half that was finished as sonic 3 (which is angel island zone to launch base zone) then released the second half of the game as sonic & knuckles (which is mushroom hill zone to death egg/doomsday zone). but to keep their original vision for the game intact as one package, the sonic & knuckles cartridge came with this thing at the top of it that let you stick the sonic 3 cartridge onto it so you could experience both halves of the game as one as originally intended, which we know today as sonic 3 & knuckles.

The first batch is from Sonic 3 alone. You either end the game with all Emeralds or no Emeralds. The next batch is from Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and it’s pretty much the same, only the Super Emeralds also give new endings.

Yeah I'm late but the Super emeralds are technically canon in the universe, but the main part is that in Mania they are in like a lil broken state and grey, like they have no powers. If it wasn't, then there won't be any in the Knuckles story. And also I think that the man who hasn't visited dentist said that they are canon asp. Still, not sure
I agree, now I think Hyper Sonic was...never meant to exist. Sonic 3 was originally a full game but split into two under time constraint. And then they created the Lock-On for Sonic & Knuckles to make the full game and Knuckles got his own story. Maybe all along, they wanted the ending with the Egg-Robo to be the true ending to tie in with Knuckles and perhaps Hyper Sonic was just a bonus?
Kirby has these kind of things too where there's a bonus final boss that takes place outside of the timeline, so maybe this is the case for Sonic 3? Hyper Sonic just doesn't happen at all?

I think it would have made sense to have Sonic 3 (without S&K) say "TO BE CONTINUED" at the end of the credits when you get all of the Chaos Emeralds. (Otherwise it would just say "TRY AGAIN" as usual.) Just displaying the game's title art, along with the characters in triumphant poses, gives the impression that Sonic 3 is over, when it's really only half over.
I mean, if you were the developers trying to make a deadline and had to split your game up - would you do anything that would expose that it was unfinished?

It's quite an aspect that the chaos emeralds and super emeralds determine the ending. For example, if you don't collect any emeralds Sonic and Tails failed to return the Master Emerald to Angel Island. And when you do collect them, you get either the good ending or the best ending. Really like the detail they added, and not that the chaos emeralds are just optional to obtain.
Sonic (No emeralds) = Bad Ending
Sonic (Choas emeralds) = Normal Ending
Sonic (Super emeralds) = Good Ending
Knuckles (No emeralds) = True Bad Ending
Knuckles (Choas emeralds) = True Normal Ending
Knuckles (Super emeralds) = True Best Ending

That ending is never used but can be seen in the games files in the lost bits video it shows this ending so that's probably why you remember it

What's the differences between Sonic 3, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic & Knuckles?
I though Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the only Sonic 3 game.
But well, Sonic 3 final boss is at launch base, the big arms boss, and in Sonic 3 & Knuckles the final boss is Death Egg Robot, but what's in Sonic & Knuckles?
Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles are different games. But, you can plug Sonic 3 in the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge and play both together and get Sonic 3 & Knuckles
sonic 3 was originally meant to be sonic 3 + sonic & knuckles as one game, but during development they couldn't finish the latter half of the game on time so they released the first half that was finished as sonic 3 (which is angel island zone to launch base zone) then released the second half of the game as sonic & knuckles (which is mushroom hill zone to death egg/doomsday zone). but to keep their original vision for the game intact as one package, the sonic & knuckles cartridge came with this thing at the top of it that let you stick the sonic 3 cartridge onto it so you could experience both halves of the game as one as originally intended, which we know today as sonic 3 & knuckles.

What we need to do to get these endings?
The first batch is from Sonic 3 alone.
You either end the game with all Emeralds or no Emeralds.
The next batch is from Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and it’s pretty much the same, only the Super Emeralds also give new endings.
I never actually saw the second bad ending as a teaser to Knuckles's part, I thought it meant that Eggman won as the last one standing.
