I love this... I've massively improved over the last few weeks with your lessons. People, every last thing he says rings true.
I come to this channel for solid advice...and " Beatdown" never lets ya down.
Great tips, Rob. Thanks.
You stole my comment. Never disappointed.
@@blujay2084 Fantastic teaching style...and one hell of a player.
Never disappointed. Amen!
Repetition really does fix everything. I love that you said that. But when your older like me your main limiting factor is your joints giving you hell while you are working on skill.
Separate pad from kit. I agree 100%. And I actually got that mantra from you Rob. In the year of the hands I started doing a practice pad routine every single day. 🥁❤
What was your routine, if you don’t mind?
@@TheWallman456 are you asking me what my routine is?
I bought my first drum kit and it was very difficult to tune it and I watched an old video of yours teaching how to tune tons.
I was trying it for five days and after watching your video it took me 15 minutes to tune 4 tons.
+ 1 subscriber!
You are the best teacher on the internet. Period.
You the coolest and calmest guy on the tube.
Listen to this guy! He's 100% ... no 101% right on what he says here. I play drums since 1999 ... at the beginning i was a joke of a drummer and could not care less about development. Then i started taking things step by step. so #1, #2 and #5 should be the holy trinity if you want to play drums right! It hurts mentally and physically but after few weeks/months, just like in the gym training, you will want to do more and feel happy when doing it! Great video Rob! I was following exactly this steps that you described here over the years! And it works! I am not a great drummer but I am not a lousy one either! Cheers!
Great advice Rob , I’ve been playing for years like yourself and it makes a lot of sense to me ...thanks bud 👍
The way that you explain, and subtly command respect and commit to the kit really resonates with me.
Very much appreciated, and thanks for the great work.
I am honored to call you my drum sensei!🙏
thanks for the tips! awesome
Coming back into the drums after years- this is exactly the stuff I needed to hear. Thank you!
Good stuff!!! Thanks beatdown! Enjoying the pocket building album as well. Thanks
whenever there is a question i have about drumming, your amazingly helpful videos instantly pop up with the exact thing I'm wondering. how??? honestly thank you so much
YOU ROCK Rob, thank you so much for amazing advice !! Stay safe !!
This is the perfect video for a new drummer! I just started playing a few months ago, and am constantly overwhelmed with how long to be practicing what. Breaking it down by the week makes so much more sense rather than trying to approach each day as something new.
The only other tip I would add is to have a practice journal! Write down what you're planning to do and a short reflection on what you noticed can help influence future things to work on. It also has helped me organize my thoughts on what all I need to work on.
Love the video. Great tips as always. Thanks Rob. Merry Christmas to you and yours.. 🎄🙏🎉
Thank you beatdown!!!!
I'm a drummer of 40+ years. If you have these three things, control, timing and rhythm, you can be a professional drummer. Watching your channel Rob, I never stop learning being a self taught drummer! Thank you brother!...
Great advice as always and I LOVE the merch!
Thanks dude. Your channel is a real Gem!
Cool stuff Bro, as usual. Cheers!.
Great lesson. Just built myself a schedule and looking forward to sticking to it!
I agree 100% on working with a practice pad away from the kit...also practiced while watching tv/recovering from surgery, being mindful of sticking, worked on 'traditional grip' with both hands, matched grip, French Technique, etc..Thank you for your videos :D
So honest and positive drummer.
Thank you for the tips and for your own way to pass this advises to us.
Muito bom Rob..
Suas dicas são demais.
Muito obrigado.
Abraço!
I have been a long time subscriber to Rob's channel.
He has helped no doubt thousands of drummers around the world with his insight and generosity of his time and knowledge.
Many many years ago this information would have been virtually impossible to procure.
I feel that his success is from his own volition.
I am an ardent purveyor of his doctrines and it truly has helped me immensely.
Maybe the community needs to pay him back and let's all buy some merchandise from his store.
It's people like Rob who actually gives people hope, confidence and can save lives with music.
My favorite buffet! Thanks Rob, great advice!
Great stuff man, as always
Fantastic tips, thanks Rob.
This video came right when I needed it. Sometimes it’s hard to stay inspired and motivated, thanks Rob!
Y
SO helpful and encouraging - THANK YOU!

Rob is a great and easy teacher and coach. Love his videos.
I love you. I am self taught and your videos help so much. God bless you! 🙏
Great job Rob!!

Thank you rob great advice
Keeping me pumped
Thanks dude great advice 🥁😬👍
Very practice and right video,i like it.Regards
Rob, 4th video i've watched from you. Seriously inspiring stuff! Love the edits and the laughs! I'm learning a lot from you, and I feel more confident about my approach to drums now. Thanks man! Stay healthy stay safe!
Edit: REPETITION FIXES EVERYTHING!!
Excellent!
I've developed more in the one year following Rob than the other 50+ years of other lessons and experience. This includes Ginger Baker tutorials, which were really breakthrough for me.
I’ve been looking for this exact thing. I’m overwhelmed at the mandarin buffet. This will really help - thank you!
🥟🍤🥩🍣🍚🍖🍗🍤🍜
Hey Rob you're an awesome teacher thanks a lot for your tips and all of your videos are amazing!!!
Don't stop please!!!!
God Bless you !!!!
Best. Drum. Channel.
Thanks man.
Awesome mate 🎵🥁
Golden words, Rob😇☝️
Yes Rob, and that is great advice from a great player! You here all these guys today talk about practice routines etc but NOT ONE of them talks about the importance of playing to your favourite songs and music, I mean how to you develop musically otherwise!
Exactly! 😑
You are the man 🤘🏾 You unknowingly cosigner my B.S. (at least I thought it was B.S.) I've been doin this seriously for almost a yr n a half and only skipped 6 days. 80% of my time is 'playin' along with songs or tracks. I LOOVE the feeling I get when my ears say "That was YOU that played n made that sweet sound Crash!" I have a long way to go but who cares, I'm having a blast. 🤘😝🤘
🥁
Hey Rob, grabbed me a rude boy hoodie on the last day they are available. Got the premium...of course. Thanks for the videos.
Damn Rob your videos come in clutch...
Thank. That was good advice. As they say, just do it ... million times.
I would play full lp's and cassettes when I started in my early teens, now 50.
I just turned 51 done the same as you listen to VH and kiss too afraid too try playing along to rush
Yes learn songs and jam with the boys...
Nice song fam! Respect
Man your screenshot cracked me up!😂. The tip about playing along to your fav albums is ON point.
So, I been watching a handfull of these vids now and I just found out you were here in Canada! I was going to sub regardless but that made me reach over and make sure it happened. Thanks for the helpfull lessons👍🍻🇨🇦
Mr Brown you've removed my frown I'm now ready to sit down and smash these beats awesome video lesson big guy. Thank you
Thank You
Rob is #1
"Bro......cool down man" had me🤣🤣
Props for the implied Mark Brzezicki shoutout! One of the most underappreciated drummers out there.
This was really helpful Rob!! Thank you!
I would also add: always record yourself!
Great and very practical tips as always. I am trying to improve my time keeping. Do you have any videos on that topic?
Thanks Rob your the dude maan! Rob can you give advice, as to when to play the bass drum & when not to, when your doin a groove. Does that make sense? Look forward to your advice & practice! Thxs Ramjam Ronergan!
Can you do a video on mastering mid tempo feels? Songs like BlackHole Sun are incredibly hard to play with good feel, let alone to play with good time. I feel like it's a different subset of learning good time. Thanks for the videos!
You're a wonderful teacher on the drums🥁🥁🥁🥁🎼🎼🎼🎼🎵🎵🎵🎵🎶🎶🎶🎶
Hands make all the difference. Learning different rhythmic phrasings using combos of singles, doubles, and triplet rudiments make for endless ideas. Learn those flam rudiments, too. Being fluid with flam accents, taps, inverts, swiss triplets, and even more weirdo rudiments, like tuchadas, will help dramatically with things like stick control and ghost-notes.
...keep it stupid-simple, singles & doubles, play along with music, have fun, repetition fixes everything!
You'll get out of it what you put into it...👍👍
Just subscribed. You Da Man
Been playing about a year. I learn something new everyday.
PS I'm 62
Thanks beat down Brown
Rob been playing alot of Jazz and big band Buddy Rich , Bob Curnow , alot of drumless jazz , Pat Methaney, point is always loved Jazz and fusion Steve Weingart and Ill play 4 to 5 hours and be soaken wet by the time im done but I had a blast doing it.So I totally agree with your #5 and of course. Pad Work
Level 42 are chill af. They zone me out when I play to them.
Get those singles as good as possible..they are the most important rudiment..doubles flams etc are all evolution of the single stroke roll..great video as usual..😁😁
Thnx. No fun no gain. Gr8.
Yes your buffet😋😋😋 ! Then now I would like to order a....Flamasingledoubleratacue like dessert....
I needed this video, I’m in a plateau and should put in more hand work.
Keith Carlock, "you gotta stay on that pad, man!!!" If I do Rob's "2 5 min singles warmups" and go to the set, I just feel so accurate and confident, and the sticks are so well seated in my grip.
Always have the answers
Rob you gotta remind us to like the video up top, sometimes I forget then I feel bad. These videos are too good
Beat down your unreal man
Canadian drummers stand up !
F'sho 🤘🏽🥁🇨🇦
About 3 months ago, I decided I had had enough of watching what my wife liked (& I didn’t) and went upstairs to watch other programs. I also decided to do what a number of drum tutors recommended (but my wife hated) I started doing work on my drum practise pad while watching TV. In that time I have put in at least an hour on the drum pad while watching 2 hours of tv 4-5 times per week for some 3 months. My hand and finger skills and control have improved 200%. My double strokes are better (more even) and faster. And having set myself a task of increasing my single strokes speed from 120ish, I am now up to 224bpm.
I completely endorse Rob’s words about time spent is the goal to improvement & useful time can be practise time on a practise pad whilst watching TV.
Coming from one myself, I just want to let you know that there are a lot of younger drummers watching your channel, and I want to just thank you for all of the work you put in to these. The quality of the education you give can't replace an irl teacher, but I speak from experience when I say it comes pretty dang close. Love the content, man. Excited to see more!
I notice my feet are definitely not as fast as my hands are so i think im going to dedicate days to feet rudiments along with hands. I need to get more control in my left foot also is the main thing.
Would love to hear your interpretation of Lowdown by Boz Skaggs 😁
Just did stupid simple for the last 13:14 :)
Hey I know this video is a bit old but I had 2 questions when you said for the first 3 years you played to music only does that mean you just played what felt right or you covered them and played exactly what’s on the record. Last question what drum pad were you using in this video I want to find a nice one that’s not to loud like that
When you're playing along with songs, are you usually trying to cover the song as written? or just cop the basic feel and do what you like?
Donuts in right hand doubles on left hand :D
Just in time.
Timbits and Tim Horton coffee. THE BEST!! Unfortunately, there is no Tim Horton’s in our area as of yet. One can hope.
T Hortons is not that good.
Hay Rob i am usually simple stupid so i might be in luck lol 😂 Ps thanks for the tips these will definitely help 👏✌️
Bossa nova drum exerscise pls man ?🙏
This is serious advice for drummers (Fun included)
Said it before. Really appreciate your channel! Very helpful advice.
At the moment, I am working on my drumming and also learning guitar. Often times, if I start working on guitar first, I'll often find myself practicing most of the day away (not a bad thing at all, in itself) but feeling too creatively / intellectually drained to really sit down and even put the effort in to play even a basic beat somewhat seriously.
I'll often feel like I've neglected drum practice / 'missed out' when this happens. I'm left feeling a little guilty. Should this really be a concern? Or can I enjoy my practice in the knowledge that things like timing etc will help with both instruments in the long run? (For example, I imagine having a good understanding of timing on the guitar and timing on the drums could potentially help with 'clicking in with' other band members at a later date?)
Timing helps in all instrument. Just do what you want man. Who knows, maybe in the future you'll get into drums again. No pressure
What if I live in the UK? Cuppa tea and a biscuit :)
Is practicing in front of a mirror to watch your technique a good idea? Or is that going a bit overboard?
So when you're playing along with songs, do you ignore the drums that are already there or do you play with them? I've been learning songs note for note but I don't think I could do that with jazz or fusion songs, or really want to approach such an improvisation based style like that. How do you approach playing along with music?
I did as much mimicking as I could. It's how I learned (and ripped off) a ton of licks that I still use today. Especially from Copeland and Phil Gould. Fusion's harder. Lift what you can, then just play to the tune. Especially solo sections
