Thanks for the mention! As you noted, the next-gen connection is live for new SharpTools users, so anyone can start designing dashboards and rules without worry! 🥳 We're working on migration tools for existing users with legacy connections and should have those available soon!
Thanks for the info! This is REALLY great news. I wanted to ask before this went live to be 100% sure but the ST team had mentioned you were working on it.
@@UnknownAlioso it looks like posts from our SharpTools account aren't showing up anymore, but the migration tools are for existing SharpTools users with legacy Groovy connections to update their dashboards/rules to the next-gen connection. WebCoRE migration would be a manual process.
Good info Brian. I just did an update on this as well. I liked your insights about the future of ST so I decided to refer folks to your video. 😀 Keep Automating my friend!
the most part of it is losing webcore, as, hopefully the some more advanced built-in rules/automation would be available in the new hopefully local platform.
You mention Webcore is working with Samsung. Can you make a deeper video about what you expect after sep 30th. The one major thing I would hate to loose that is still in webcore is humidity monitoring. If the humidity in a bathroom increases by10% the bathroom fan will turn on. Then after it drops again it will turn back off.
Ohhhhh, I'm not saying Webcore is working with Samsung. I actually said the opposite, but probably wasn't clear enough. Webcore is, as of right now, going to stop working. Webcore is a separate entity from Samsung and they need to make the adjustments to using the new Rules API for it to work with Samsung as of Sept 30. Sorry David. That's the situation though.
@@AutomateYourLife my apologies in listening to your video more closely I see I read into it what I wanted to hear. Thanks for the info. Luckily I have already moved most of my routines except a couple I can't seem to figure out how to do else where.
is there a video or tutorial on how to use the new Rules API? specifically how I can write something that will take an average of some temperature sensors and use that to control my thermostat?
Oh there's lots of developer tutorials through the Smartthings site if you register as a developer! I'm going to SDC this week, so I should see some tools
Brian, you had mentioned in the video that you’d be open to helping the community with this transition, and as that goes, I was wondering if you might have any tips for how to export plain-text backups of all of one’s WebCoRE pistons? Because even though WebCoRE uses like me have 6 weeks to migrate our WebCoRE pistons to something else, I’m not 100% confident that I’ll be able to migrate everything in time. (And if I at least had plain-text backups of my pistons, that would offer some peace of mind if perhaps I might not be able to migrate everything in time.)
Hey Ashley, If you head to Webcore on a PC/Mac browser, it's actually pretty easy to grab each piston! When you tap on a piston in the interface, you might enter directly into the code or you might enter into the main information page for the piston. If you're in the code, hit save and you'll see the page I'm talking about. There you'll see a copy to clipboard icon above the Script section. :)
I've never had a good experience with SmartThings support over the years, so forgive me if I'm not going to hold my breath that they can deploy this out without MAJOR impact. Just 2 weeks ago, all of my Zigbee devices stopped working. They had no clue how to fix it--I ended up figuring it out on my own. I had to delete each device and re-add it; they had no clue what happened or why. I hope I don't have to do the same with ZWave. I have nearly 200 Zwave/Zigbee devices, so that would suck.
So with the Edge drivers now out of the beta phase, so we still need to be enrolled in the Beta program? I assume I will need to unenroll in the Beta and then add my devices again. Or just sit and wait for ST to roll these devices over to the Edge main drivers? Enjoy your content by the way, went down the ST road because of the content available on this channel.
Thanks Brian for this update. I’m looking forward to what Smartthings has for the future. My past successes with Smartthings has been been spotty to say the least, but I’m willing to stick with it. Once again, Thanks.
So far just custom edge drivers. I think in most cases the smartapps will come through the device integration process. Ie. Add Hue, get the new music sync option.
Yep, DTH's will stop Alex. You will see this likely start in September for you, as I've seen official communication strategies starting around that time.
Hey Automaters! I know the announcements here could be painful for you. I'm always here to help, so ask away. There are some great extra details here on the SmartThings Support page: support.smartthings.com/hc/en-us/articles/7055691183380?mc_cid=75421954c8&mc_eid=574074d8e5 FYI - It sounds like both SharpTools and ActionTiles are working on fixing their integrations with SmartThings: support.actiontiles.com/en/communities/12/topics/12351-transitioning-to-the-new-smartthings-platform
This was the worst thing that I ve listenned in a few days!!! What about the substitution of webcore??? ActionTiles….is going away? SharpTools is a good alternative?? Thnks for your amazing job trying to help us mate…
Is there any talk that Routines will one day accept variable values? For example, for my thermostat, I'd like to define Away Temperature, Day Temperature and Night Temperature with specific values. This is easy to do in Webcore. Thanks
@@AutomateYourLife you say the virtual switches will be ok. Do you know what the process will be to create/edit them without the groovy interface? Worried all my virtuals are going to disappear. Should I add a bunch more now before groovy goes?
I was an early SmartThings user-original original hub. I chose it because it was so open and let users do so much. I stayed as long as I could and I really tried switching to everything to the new routines. They are just too simple. For example “do every hour on the hour while time is between sunset and 12 am.” The only way I could figure that out was to create individual tasks on the hour. So, if I wanted to change something, I had to change it in six places. SharpTools might be able to do it but for a $. I’m sad but I think I need to move on.
Well, Matter will allow connectivity of all Matter devices to those other hubs (as long as they support Matter). Matter is the end of each company producing specific integrations with each hub out there. However, doesn't mean someone can't make a plugin on the new rules engine to do this!
So, although I watch all of your videos, I guess I didn't realize that my custom device handlers and SmartApps would just stop working altogether recently. Now I cannot add users to my Schlage Smart lock or control my Zwave thermostat. Any recommendations on alternatives to SmartApps. I hate to throw it out and head to Home Assistant, but maybe it's time.
What is the application you show at 10:18 in the video? Thanks ----- How do I get the driver option in the hub menu? I found the answer to this question in your first reply in this video ruclips.net/video/SNi6BIhWOu0/видео.html
I currently have a isy 94i hub controlling insteon and am looking at redoing my system. If you were going to start from scratch would you be inclined to purchase Aoetec or Hubitat?
Personally I like SmartThings as a platform for the extra compatibility you're going to get and some of the smart apps I hear are being developed. Hubitat is more complex and the automation options are much stronger that way. So it's compatibility and ease vs complexity, and I always pick the easier route for home automation. But there's a good breakdown in this video: ruclips.net/video/sYhRfApfvwk/видео.html
It sounds like SmartThings is going to finally become a real competitor for Home Assistant on the local control scene. Home Assistant had been killing it on that level for a long time. With multiple hubs and being able to run together, this could be really good for Home Automation as it could provide the opportunity for redundancy and high availability for home automation systems, something that even expensive proprietary systems have been lacking. Having a single point of failure (the hub) has been an issue before, especially if you run systems that become reliant on the hub and just won't work if that hub fails.
Brian the remaining DHT that I have right now is a simulated contact sensor you showed us to create a long time ago to trigger Alexa routines do you know if there is an option to migrate that or it will be part of the 1%
Hii! Do you know if the virtual Alexa Switch that you promoted in the past will be automatically converted to Edge Drivers? I'm asking that because my home automations are heavy dependent on virtual switches. I am already using an Edge Driver for new virtual switches but my concern is regarding the old ones...
IDK but many people including myself are having many problems with Smarthings and the CT100 thermostat. We get messages a network error has occurred try again later when trying to change the temperature from the app. When you load the thermostat on the app it says this device has not updated all of it's information. Support isn't much help.
Lots of this is going on right now. As we go through the transition from Groovy, which finally started, we're going to have some of this. Hopefully without touching much this will all come back working for us.
what does this mean for the airconditioning units by samsung that i control over smartthings with no hub at all? They are wifi devices. And what about the ST-Community-Installer and it's apps? And the way i integrated the airco with domoticz/homeassistant through the developer environment? I don't get it....
I don't think you'll have any impacts Willem. I think you're good with what you've talked about. If you have anything that is showing up in the IDE, graph.api.smartthings.com, then it's at risk of disappearing. That's in the device handlers and smartapps section.
@@AutomateYourLife thank you I have the first gen whole home wifi not the last smarthings wifi if that makes sense. Is it applicable to both. Sorry didn't specify.
LOSING Logitech Harmony Remote connection to SmartThings..... This is the one that is going to hurt me the most... Do not believe any transition for this setup will happen. Logitech is still supporting the Harmony , but their connection to ST is legacy...The buttons on my Harmony remote have been used for years for lights and TV automations.. Sigh.
Oh man...Richard. That sucks. Sorry...I think you're right, BUT...what I'll say is that right now, that device is not stated on the support URL that I posted in the pinned comment. Devices listed in there won't be continuing to work, so...mayyyyybe you're ok?
HA! I have received exactly ZERO notification from Smartthings that my smart home is about to dissolve into nothing. The only reason I know is I just happened to log into facebook (a very rare occurrence for me) and see a post.
I'm in the market to buy a smart hub. But I'm confused I shouldn't buy smart things right now? And wait till there new one comes out? What is that called? Matter? Or should I just buy a different hub. Sorry I'm lost lol new to this
Hey Celeste, I think SmartThings is totally fine to buy today but there is LOTS of changes going on. Stick around the channel and watch some of our news stuff. One of those is out this weekend. You'll get caught up quickly. But I have a series of 101 videos that take time to watch, but will catch you up to speed on everything you need: ruclips.net/p/PLFPS7-631cZEZ38AUb4jpzHZj-rYnY-jl That playlist also contains everything you need to know about Matter. That's the 4th video in the playlist. That should have you 100% caught up and feeling ready to make any purchase!
Toughest question to answer right now period. I would say Smartthings just because at least then you can have a smart home without being stuck with an iphone forever
Hi Brian, the only time i logged in to the IDE was setting up the philips hue motion sensor to smartthings hub by copy pasting the code, does it mean i will lose the motion sensor functionality? and does it mean if i am getting new device i should go for the one that doesnt require IDE set up like AOTEC or SMARTTHINGS motion sensor?
Brian, i have a follow up question, what happen if i l get another philips hue motion sensor? how do i copy and paste the code to make it work when setting like it used to be?
So the one built in was RBoy's app? Did not know that. I was considering paying for RBoy's apps, but wanted to wait for the dust to settle with Groovy going away!
I bought an Acura sensor and I went to find the custom handler place and came up empty. How would I go about getting the aqara sensor to be recognized by smart things?
It should be found by your hub, but I have good news! Actually, it's in this video: ruclips.net/video/pWEzxdY_vN8/видео.html. Aqara's working on Edge drivers.
@@AutomateYourLife I'll definitely watch that video again, when I attached it to my hub it came up as a thing and so I figured it needed a custom driver but let me watch that video happily
How is the amazing device handler affected by this? I use that to turn on my Roomba when I leave the house. Amazon does not have location based automation in Australia yet.
Hey Jodi, the good news is that there is a new Virtual Device Creator in Samsung Labs in the app, AND there's a neat Edge Virtual Device creator that a developer made. I've been using that and it's amazing actually. Been wanting to show it actually, but I haven't figured out how. So create a new device using one of those and just replace your existing groovy virtual device I think. Or you can wait to closer to the Sept 30 and see if it just converts over to Edge automatically!
as a smartthings wifi user (all my devices are connected to it via zigbee) will i have to get the v3 hub or is my wifi hub going to support edge drivers? thanks
Hi Brian, I use VLC Thing, Webcore, ,dedicated laptop w/VLC Player and Bluetooth speaker to speak notifications (i.e., freezer door has been open for 2 minutes, Backyard gate has been opened. etc.). With Webcore going away I can convert to sharp tools but I can’t find anything about an Edge driver for VLC player. Have any info on an Edge VLC playerVLC Player
Thanks for your content! And please help!! I moved off smartthings a few years ago and would like to go back. However I cannot for the life of me get the child devices of a Qubino Flush 2 relay to work. They used to work fine with device handlers. I’ve tried every permutation of drivers in the IDE and they can be seen but not responsive or controllable. The parent device works fine
Oh man...it's gonna be tough to get it working right now. The IDE is being broken down now. What you'll have to see is if there's going to be an Edge driver for this device. Then I'd get that installed on your hub and then try to re-pair the Qubino.
Hubitat's a little harder but if you want to get more in-depth with automation get that. SmartThings has more compatibility overall and even options for cameras. It's easier and just hits the middle ground that most people are after. That's why I recommend it most times.
gimme a B gimme an R !!! Wow ! As someone who based an entire buisness on a RUclips hobby , I am so happy about this news! I just heard years of reassurance coming from the guy who got me into smart things in the first place ! Side note , I like the music in the background and the news format . I found buds smart home while trying to solve a customer issue . He's informative but dryyyyyyy
ahahahhahahaa! Thanks for all the kudos my friend. I sure try not to lead people to a bad spot with their business, so keep on keeping with ST big guy. I think they've got a lot to offer.
Glad I'm (relative) new in the smarthome world. Already switched all my devices to Edge! Now setup all my automations again. Do you now will there be a new platform to check your connections? The route a device has, how well it connects and so on?
Great video Brian! I spoke to ST support 2 months ago and was hoping that their next hub will store all devices, automations and routines in a cloud, so you don't lose your entire home programming if the hub stops working as it happened to me and I have over 90 devices connected to with months of work programming it. Unfortunately they didn't have an answer. Do you have any info regarding that by chance?
Great question Derrian. There are options already that I see, so I don't think they're going away. I'm asking for official messaging on that, but I believe they'll convert over to the new version (there's one in Labs now) or there's an Edge community created driver you can use now. Once I know, I'll post more.
Omg I’ve got a Samsung 8K 75” Smart tv 2020 model I think it is. I also have an echo show 10. For a while the tv and the sound bar would turn on when I asked Alexa and also turn off. But that never lasted long. Constant headaches with such a simple thing. I’ve tried going through the whole process from the beginning so many times I am really over it so any changes Samsung make is gunna be a good thing. Can’t wait till Matter gets going. Even the sound bar gets lost occasionally and I have to go into the tv settings in sound and change it back to tv and sound bar to be used. Gggrrr.
So after Sep 30th WebCoRE, virtual switches, and all custom device handles will stop working? Which means any automations I have that utility virtual switches to trigger Alexa automations will stop. There goes all our security automations. ☹️ I've also used custom device handlers to get MyQ to work with Smartthings, which has been very helpful but that goes bye bye too. So will we have to unpair every zigbee and z-way device from Smartthings and then add them back in, AND then hope we can get similar automations to work? The routines available in the current Smartthings app pale in comparison to what I can do in WebCoRE. I can't get the app to let me create a custom schedules to run such as every other week, at least that's I'm aware of. Okay, I think I'm starting to rant now so I'll stop. 😅
Ok, slooooooowwwwwww down TJ. Virtual Switches I THINK will be handled. Either way, I have a solution for those. You won't have to unpair and re-pair any Zigbee/Z-Wave devices. Everything should just convert.
@@AutomateYourLife phew! That's a relief! I'm always thinking way ahead of things. I can see Friday from Monday and if I can't see the solution my "oh crap" gauge kicks in high gear. 😅 I'll keep watching you videos to help alleviate my "what ifs". 😉
Thanks a lot.. most of smartthings users used webcore tonset complex automations. As far as I understood new api rules can be used instead of webcore for creating automations. Maybe u could make a video for it. Many of us have no clue how to do that..😖
@@AutomateYourLife when you create this video would youake sure to include how to set it up and access the rules API? That's the part I can't figure out!
What's going to happen with virtual switches? That's the only thing I'm using smartthings. It's how I get google and alexa routines and automations to run together.
So I just purchased a smartthings hub. Should I wait to try building virtual switches wait to try to integrate my Govee products? I have a good setup with Alexa, but was looking forward to integrating smartthings as well but a lot of what I wanted to do looks like it requires groovy. Hopefully you will look into some of what we need to do with these things moving forward.
Tutorials for migrating smart app functionality to home assistant, particularly for smart locks. Fingers crossed rboy gets updated so it continues to work. This is frustrating. I guess I need to look into getting home assistant directly connected to schlage locks and start removing samsung's place in my home. I can't really look at this as anything but more reasons to dislike samsung. With multiple lemon phones from them in the past and then a washer, dryer, fridge, and dish washer that all died quickly and their warranty was a joke for, this was the last samsung product in my life. Hopefully I'm over reacting but samsung inconveniencing me for products I've spent money on... Probably time to fully remove them.
This is pretty confusing, but it appears this is going to ruin my smart home right when i heavily invested in Samsung and things are working perfectly. What's the better alternative, Home Assistant or Hubitat?
I was told that ActionTiles wasn't currently working on the new Rules API. Sharptools is basically complete their work, so that might be a better move for you now.
On September 30, 2022 SmartThings will shut down their legacy Groovy Platform, which affects all ActionTiles users. Rest assured that we are working hard to release the migration tools so that ActionTiles will continue to work with the new SmartThings platform! We are hoping to a smooth experience with minimal service interruptions. We will release more information as it becomes available. Please stay tuned for a series of further announcements. ActionTiles has become an integral part of many smart homes and businesses since 2017. We thank you for your love and support! Please refer to our community forum for more information and discussion: support.actiontiles.com/en/communities/12/topics/12351-transitioning-to-the-new-smartthings-platform
I just got Into simple automatons. I have been using webcore to create complex automatons. For example I have my living room lights slowly dim up at sundown. Will we loose these types of functions or will that app be updated to do similar automations.
The slow dim option isn't there as of yet, so you're likely to lose that piece right now. It may show up in Automations, and I would expect it will eventually.
Thanks Brian I have several advanced automations in groovy that will render useless with this change. At the same time Smartthings seems to offer only simplest automations setting my smarthome back to a stupid home. As I need to write new automations, I am seriously considering switching to Home Assistant
And that's ok! You gotta do what you gotta do. I'm just about to drop a video that explores how to create better automations, so maybe that will give you some ideas. It'll also give you a review of the hubs capabilities and how they go.
Brian, as you know, I have had it with echos and their ever breaking ecosystem. I may know amazons system inside and out but that's the extent of my "tech" knowledge. Therefore it looks like my choices for easy automation are either homekit or smartthings. Being a pixel and echo owner, smartthings would definitely be the more inexpensive option. If I end up going that way should I just wait out this transition or can you start with a fresh hub and the newer options? Will this newer platform be local only? Lastly, do you have any hope or insight that I should wait and continue to be patient with amazon? Thanks
The main thing I use Groovy for, honestly, is replacing failed devices. If I have a smart switch go out, for example, the app makes me delete the switch, and install a new one, which means I need to redo any automations tied to that switch. In Groovy though, I simply change the device ID of the virtual device to that of the new physical switch, and I'm done. No additional changes needed. No automation changes necessary. The old Smartthings app had the ability to "replace" a failed device, but the new one doesn't (unless it was added very recently). I really hope that this comes back before they shut down Groovy.
As I understands it, not automation options will disappear, correct? I also hope that LAN edge drivers means that Nest speaker will finally be compatible with SmartThings
We can dream! I don't know if the Nest Speakers will become available, but yes...you are correct that no automation options should really disappear (except the SmartApps)
I've been using the vEdge app(?) to create my Edge virtual device handlers, and I love it. I *think* I've replaced all the Amazing device handlers I was using to translate between Alexa and SmartThings. vEdge has a bunch of different types of virtual devices. I started with using switches, quickly realized that I had to use contacts (not switches) to use them as triggers for Amazon routines, but what about all those other types of virtual devices? I'm sure I could think of some interesting things to do, if I knew what each type of virtual device was supposed to do. Is that something you could do a video on? What the different device types do? (Button vs Switch is a basic one with a good write up, but what about all the others?)
Thanks so much for this information! I had door sensors that relied on the groovy code, and the code was made by the community for the wink door/window sensors. However for the last week they just weren't working. Now I know why. And since these are custom device handlers, they aren't getting edge drivers. Looks like I'll need to replace them completely.
@@AutomateYourLife I have, sadly there are none. And I doubt there will be. These sensor’s aren’t the current ones that wink make. They are the old rectangular ones, and the IDE groovy code was made in 2015 for the thing. And those drivers weren’t perfect either. The battery reporting didn’t work and neither did the tamper protection. And when I first set it up the door actually had to be open for some odd reason. So if these things are going to ever get the edge drivers it’s going to be the newer ones.
@@AutomateYourLife I love smart things, My biggest detractor is the Matter Controller vs Bridge. ST will bridge Zigbee and Zwave to Google and Alexa as is now, but they won't bridge via Matter. So no Apple Home? It would be nice if my Echos, Nests, and Homepods/appleTVs could all share our Smart thing's devices with multi admin. But it sounds like that is not how things will be. An ideal world would be that the homepod, echos and nest hubs, on our Eero mesh next to our Smartthings hub could all talk together. Enquiring minds want to know.
Good info, Brian. There's not much point in whining about it, but we need to adapt to it. I do hope they get their hubs working together. I'm one of those folks who is showing over 40 custom apps in the IDE although I'm probably not currently using over a handful. I know you've been playing around with Homekit more and I'm concerned that the major Homekit-ST integration developer moved to Hubitat and recommended those who use that integration do too. Of course if ST is going to support Homekit via matter, for example it might not be an issue in the long run, but certainly will in the short run as September is almost here. Keep the info coming. I'm glad a few years ago I made the decision to use Hue's pricey products (18 bulbs here.) They seem to have weathered the storm nicely and is a brand that continues to work with almost anything and everything. There's a lesson here someplace in shopping by brand vs price.
Thanks Hugh! I agree there's a reason to buy those products that really have their pulse on the future of smart homes. As painful as this is for some with ST, they've had a fairly good grasp of where this is heading. Hue has been amazing at it, but they lead the industry in a lot of...quiet ways
Wow! We use Rboys Rental Lock Automator for our property management company, with 100 Airbnb locks connected. I really hope we have a Rboys replacement program by then!
Hey Brian, thanks for a great video! Can you please do a video on how to update Zooz Zwave switches (and dimmers) to edge drivers? I've had this on my to-do list for months but I still haven't seen a step-by-step tutorial on how to do it. Thanks again!
Hey Justin, thanks! Good news: ruclips.net/video/SNi6BIhWOu0/видео.html. That has the step by step stuff in it! The steps is to find the Edge driver (which Zooz has worked on some, and there are some on the community boards), then unpair, and repair. It should pick up those Edge drivers. Good news though, those Zooz ones should just convert by the 30th. :)

Do we need to create a bunch of virtual switches before the 30th or what is the strategy?
Brian, you had mentioned in the video that you’d be open to helping the community with this transition, and as that goes, I was wondering if you might have any tips for how to export plain-text backups of all of one’s WebCoRE pistons?
Because even though WebCoRE uses like me have 6 weeks to migrate our WebCoRE pistons to something else, I’m not 100% confident that I’ll be able to migrate everything in time.
(And if I at least had plain-text backups of my pistons, that would offer some peace of mind if perhaps I might not be able to migrate everything in time.)
Hey Ashley,
If you head to Webcore on a PC/Mac browser, it's actually pretty easy to grab each piston! When you tap on a piston in the interface, you might enter directly into the code or you might enter into the main information page for the piston. If you're in the code, hit save and you'll see the page I'm talking about. There you'll see a copy to clipboard icon above the Script section. :)
@@AutomateYourLife That sounds pretty handy-I’ll check that out!
What are people using for an actiontiles alternative. That dashboard was nice
Action tiles is fixing their service actually. I announced that in our last news video too!
Sounds like something related to the radio changed on you there...ugly situation.
A tutorial I need is how to create virtual switches with contact sensor. So is possible to trigger alexa routines with smartthings
Yeah this is a big ask!
@@AutomateYourLife A big and important ask.
Just sit and wait! 99% of what everyone has should just switch over. Hang tight Richard and don't cause yourself a bunch of work :)
Thanks Brian for this update. I’m looking forward to what Smartthings has for the future. My past successes with Smartthings has been been spotty to say the least, but I’m willing to stick with it. Once again, Thanks.
Fingers crossed! I think we're good!
HI Brian, thanks for the video. What effect will it have for WiFi devices?
Not much at this time Greg, however when Matter hits I think you'll find WiFi devices get better (when Matter compatible).
Are they any tutorials on how to install custom edge smartapps?
So far just custom edge drivers. I think in most cases the smartapps will come through the device integration process. Ie. Add Hue, get the new music sync option.
hey brian, just to confirm that DTH will stop working after 30 sep? no signs of edge drivers getting pushed down to me yet..
Yep, DTH's will stop Alex. You will see this likely start in September for you, as I've seen official communication strategies starting around that time.
Hey Automaters! I know the announcements here could be painful for you. I'm always here to help, so ask away.
There are some great extra details here on the SmartThings Support page: support.smartthings.com/hc/en-us/articles/7055691183380?mc_cid=75421954c8&mc_eid=574074d8e5
FYI - It sounds like both SharpTools and ActionTiles are working on fixing their integrations with SmartThings: support.actiontiles.com/en/communities/12/topics/12351-transitioning-to-the-new-smartthings-platform
This was the worst thing that I ve listenned in a few days!!! What about the substitution of webcore??? ActionTiles….is going away? SharpTools is a good alternative?? Thnks for your amazing job trying to help us mate…
Is it going to affect home assistant?
Actually, I just adjusted the ActionTiles statement per an article they posted. You might be OK Pedro.
Doesn't look like it'll affect Home Assistant integration.
It's unfortunate all of my automations use webCoRe 😱
Oh gosh...The beard is gonna grow while you rearrange everything.
Hey Brian great video, by what date will all devices migrate to Edge?
Sept 30!
I have some virtual switches, will this change effect them?
Yep. Video coming.
Is there any talk that Routines will one day accept variable values? For example, for my thermostat, I'd like to define Away Temperature, Day Temperature and Night Temperature with specific values. This is easy to do in Webcore. Thanks
You can do it with something I'll show you soon John. If you're interested though, vEdge does it
@@AutomateYourLife Thanks. Looking forward to seeing how to do it.
@@AutomateYourLife That would be great. Thanks.
Will I still be able to create a simulated Alexa switch that's seen on both ST and Alexa? My home and away routine is centered around it 🙃
I'll have a way to do it for you in an upcoming video :)
@@AutomateYourLife Thank you for not abandoning ST users like others have!
This is not good news for people using webcore and virtual switches/Alexa simulated switches.
The virtual switches will be okay, but yeah...webcore
@@AutomateYourLife you say the virtual switches will be ok. Do you know what the process will be to create/edit them without the groovy interface? Worried all my virtuals are going to disappear. Should I add a bunch more now before groovy goes?
Nope! The interface will be in app
:(
Its Too bad that Smart Things won't let us connect our hubs via Matter with Home A** and other Matter Ecosystems.
Not yet. Edge and Lua based apps are coming, so I'd expect many things like RBoy to come back.
Will the end of Groovy break connectivity with non Smartthings devices like ikea or Hue motion sensors?
Not those ones. There are a few things that will be broken but they are fairly obscure and usually from a company that's not around anymore
@@AutomateYourLife Thank you!
Will my virtual switches (virtual Alexa Switches) still work?
Yep! I'm gonna have an update soon on that.
Oh, I'm glad someone caught on to that. Figures it'd be you. It could be really an exciting time.
@@AutomateYourLife What made you think it would be me lol :P
Brian the remaining DHT that I have right now is a simulated contact sensor you showed us to create a long time ago to trigger Alexa routines do you know if there is an option to migrate that or it will be part of the 1%
Just confirming that with SmartThings! I'll get back with a video or a statement
I'm still in love with Miss A. She still keeps my home running well !
😃😃😃👍👍👍
Do you know when Webcore will cease to work? Is it also being turned off on Sept. 30?
Dates have shifted a little bit, but ya. Webcore's stopping soon. I think Oct 15 now.
Thanks!
Hii! Do you know if the virtual Alexa Switch that you promoted in the past will be automatically converted to Edge Drivers? I'm asking that because my home automations are heavy dependent on virtual switches. I am already using an Edge Driver for new virtual switches but my concern is regarding the old ones...
I'm getting official statements from ST on what they'll do with those. I think they will move over
@@AutomateYourLife great! Thank you for responding! Do you have any news on that?
IDK but many people including myself are having many problems with Smarthings and the CT100 thermostat. We get messages a network error has occurred try again later when trying to change the temperature from the app. When you load the thermostat on the app it says this device has not updated all of it's information. Support isn't much help.
Lots of this is going on right now. As we go through the transition from Groovy, which finally started, we're going to have some of this. Hopefully without touching much this will all come back working for us.
@@AutomateYourLife When do you think the transition will end?
what does this mean for the airconditioning units by samsung that i control over smartthings with no hub at all? They are wifi devices. And what about the ST-Community-Installer and it's apps? And the way i integrated the airco with domoticz/homeassistant through the developer environment? I don't get it....
I don't think you'll have any impacts Willem. I think you're good with what you've talked about.
If you have anything that is showing up in the IDE, graph.api.smartthings.com, then it's at risk of disappearing. That's in the device handlers and smartapps section.
Do you know what will happen to smartthings home wifi hub will it still be compatible? Also will there be a myq integration as I use myq lite for now
WiFi just got the update recently to get Edge drivers. You should be good. MyQ...I'm not 100% sure on that one sorry.
@@AutomateYourLife thank you I have the first gen whole home wifi not the last smarthings wifi if that makes sense. Is it applicable to both. Sorry didn't specify.
Ooooh I don't know that
The music makes it hard to hear what you're saying
So is the overall point of this to make it so everything runs locally? If so I am not against it.
Yep!
What about Ask Alexa? ... This is one of the reasons I made the move from SmartThings to Home Assistant!
No details to give there, sorry.
Waiting to seewhat ActionTiles does... and I've got some custom code to figure out like my Konnected Sprinkler Controller code I wrote.. :S
That code for the Konnected System...that'll be tough potentially.
How do I reinstall my Harmony hub? I bought a new TV, and had to fix my watch TV activity. Now smartthings has dropped my hub.
I think you can't now...
Trying to connect Aqara curtain motor B1 with Alexa. It was straightforward with Groovy IDE but now I am lost. Any advice?
It's even easier now. ruclips.net/video/1Q4X2NDvrRo/видео.html
HA! I have received exactly ZERO notification from Smartthings that my smart home is about to dissolve into nothing. The only reason I know is I just happened to log into facebook (a very rare occurrence for me) and see a post.
You won't see anything from Samsung until Aug 29 :)
I'm in the market to buy a smart hub. But I'm confused I shouldn't buy smart things right now? And wait till there new one comes out? What is that called? Matter? Or should I just buy a different hub. Sorry I'm lost lol new to this

Hello
Does that mean no virtual devices ALSO?
As many of my automations do rely on it :(
Thanks
FJanahi
Nope, we will have a way to use them still. Just getting some notes from SmartThings and I'll make a video
Will my virtual switches in STH stop working with Alexa with the new changes?
They might, but I'll have a solution for you soon enough
Samsung smart things was never really good anyway. It gets completely blown out the water by almost every other company when it comes to smart homes
Ya?
Wow, glad I moved to home assistant about a year ago. I was very much reliant on IDE.
😃
What do you recommend Smartthings or Apple homekit?
Toughest question to answer right now period. I would say Smartthings just because at least then you can have a smart home without being stuck with an iphone forever
And I hope my V2 hub continues to function properly...
You should be good to go :)
Noooo, it's likely that sensor will just switch over to an Edge driver without you doing a thing!
Brian, i have a follow up question, what happen if i l get another philips hue motion sensor? how do i copy and paste the code to make it work when setting like it used to be?
Brian, any word on what happens to the Smart Lock Guest Access?
That's part of RBoy's apps Shawn. I'm still trying to figure out what's going on there!
Thanks Brian. That’s good to know.
as a smartthings wifi user (all my devices are connected to it via zigbee) will i have to get the v3 hub or is my wifi hub going to support edge drivers? thanks

Great minds think alike?!
Hi Brian, I use VLC Thing, Webcore, ,dedicated laptop w/VLC Player and Bluetooth speaker to speak notifications (i.e., freezer door has been open for 2 minutes, Backyard gate has been opened. etc.).
@@AutomateYourLife The 1% 😂! Thanks for your reply!
As someone just getting into automation, at this point would you recommend ST over Hubitat? (BTW ST is £45.00 cheaper in the UK)
Hubitat's a little harder but if you want to get more in-depth with automation get that. SmartThings has more compatibility overall and even options for cameras. It's easier and just hits the middle ground that most people are after. That's why I recommend it most times.
@@AutomateYourLife Thanks for the reply, I'll go with ST....

Most would be replaced! If not all.
Is this the big news you have been teasing us with?
I think I only mentioned it once!
Glad I'm (relative) new in the smarthome world. Already switched all my devices to Edge! Now setup all my automations again.
Do you now will there be a new platform to check your connections? The route a device has, how well it connects and so on?
That actually we haven't heard from the ST team. I sure hope so!
I'm glad I upgraded to Home Assistant when I did. I used Groovy a ton when I was on ST.
Someday I hope they improve the sluggishness of their app!
Will ActionTiles continue to work after the IDE is retired?
Right now it doesn't sound like it will. We have yet to hear officially from actiontiles

Nothing yet! Although I'd have to bet this is on the roadmap.

Are virtual Alexa switches going away?
Great question Derrian. There are options already that I see, so I don't think they're going away. I'm asking for official messaging on that, but I believe they'll convert over to the new version (there's one in Labs now) or there's an Edge community created driver you can use now. Once I know, I'll post more.
@@AutomateYourLife I hope they stay. I literally have 28 in use...
Gggrrr.
Hoping for ya!

Thanks a lot.. most of smartthings users used webcore tonset complex automations. As far as I understood new api rules can be used instead of webcore for creating automations. Maybe u could make a video for it. Many of us have no clue how to do that..😖
I don't know if we can quite catch up to the complexity of webcore, but I definitely plan to show how to make more complex automations!
@@AutomateYourLife when you create this video would youake sure to include how to set it up and access the rules API? That's the part I can't figure out!
What's going to happen with virtual switches? That's the only thing I'm using smartthings. It's how I get google and alexa routines and automations to run together.
I'll have a solution for you, just waiting on official word from SmartThings to see what their plan is. But I have a solve now.
Nope, go for it.
You do you. This is the last big hurdle here for a while though I think
What about IKEA devices, especially Styrbar? I only used my first DH and they go away? 😬😬
You'll be just fine. Ikea stuff should convert over.
This is pretty confusing, but it appears this is going to ruin my smart home right when i heavily invested in Samsung and things are working perfectly. What's the better alternative, Home Assistant or Hubitat?
Both are great in their own ways. Hubitat is easier and would let you keep webcore if you're using that. Actiontiles too.
Also are you saying that ActionTiles will be going away?!
I've read action tiles are waiting for Samsung to release the API, seems like Samsung is not give developers much time.

Thanks Brian
I have several advanced automations in groovy that will render useless with this change.
Thanks
It'll be 90% local in SmartThings. They can't make it 100%, but no one can right now
The main thing I use Groovy for, honestly, is replacing failed devices.
I didn't even know this hack...and I'm so sad I didn't.
Yeah that's one of the videos we'll do Suzi! Good that you found vEdge already :)

@@AutomateYourLife thanks.
Well do a search for edge drivers for them! Could be made already!
Looking great Brian, Great Video! Bye bye Groovy. Bye By Smart Things, no offense, but Matter is coming.
You do you Lawrence! I think I like what I'm seeing other than losing a few pistons. :)
Need to know how to integrate with Alexa and Google Home if that's going to change.
I'll let ya know! That won't change because of this, but Matter will likely change a few things in October
Yikes David. Let's hope I get a response from RBoy, but so far...silence.
I’ve asked them as well. No response. Are there any competitors that will work in the new system?
Good info Brian, thank you.
@@AutomateYourLife Thanks again Brian. I've taken some of my questions to this discussion on the ST forum. Hopefully I'll get everything answered there! community.smartthings.com/t/st-edge-zooz-edge-driver-channel/246497/28
Hi Brian !!! Thank you for the announcement … it’s bad news for me because my favorites automations run in webcore in SmartThings … since I’m going to have to migrate all to Hubitat including the devices .. do you have any recomendation in naming convention for the smart devices ? I always want to improve that maybe now is the opportunity ! Do you have any videos made before ? Thank you very much
I haven't tackled naming conventions just yet in our videos Martin. I don't know that I have a better solution than anyone else at this point, so I wouldn't want to guide you. I've dabbled in it a bit with routines and automations, but never with the devices themselves. :)
@@AutomateYourLife I have few ideas, I'll try to implement them and report you back. Maybe a topic for a future video. Thanks Brian!
