Which Thread Gives You the Best Looking Leather Stitching?

- The look of your leather stitching starts with thread selection.
In this video I look at why thread selection is so important in leathercraft. I review the effect that different thread size and thickness will have on the look of your project and why thread colour and contrast are so important to make your hand stitching look its best.

Another very useful video! The most confusing thing for me is thread sizes. If you look on RUclips, it's almost impossible to find a good video on the different thread sizes with examples of each. You touched on some of it here but it seems that there is a lot more to learn about the different sizes of threads, the types of materials they are made of, the thread sizes that are commonly used for different products (watches, wallets, hand bags etc.) and which needle to use with which thread.
Thanks! I think what you are looking for is a combination of stitching hole spacing and thread thickness. These two go hand in hand when looking at project selection. I have an upcoming video on thread brands so I will be able to touch more on the different materials.

Another great video. Not sure how many different stitching irons you have but it's worth mentioning the difference in stitch appearance created by various irons and the differing holes they create.

How about a video on starting and stopping when stitching. Specifically, how many stitches to back stitch at the beginning and end. Which are effective and look good. There seem to be many different opinions on how to start and stop a stitch line. I only know they should match in number. Only a suggestion.
Thank you for your suggestion. I have been meaning to do a more focused stitching video that would cover that in detail. For now I would say any back stitching you do should be balanced and that it is only strictly required for linen thread. You can get away with no back stitches when using polyester thread for the cleanest look.
Can u put a detailed video regarding various color combination of leather ( finished or DIY dyed) & thread for veg tanned items?

Hi, that is a good idea for a video. For starting in leathercraft I would recommend 3.85 or 4mm, which is suitable for small and medium projects. 3mm or less is normally reserved very small projects like watch straps, and 5mm is more suitable for large projects like bags.

What thread size is in 5:00 and is that round or flat?
And which type of thread round or flat gives better stitching appearance
They are all round twisted polyester threads. There are few different brands there but all are around 0.5 to 0.55mm. Flat will give you a wider looking stitch for the same thickness but after stitching you should be hammering down on your stitches so they end up being quite similar. I suggest trying both and seeing which one you like more.
So would it make a difference if i used 4mm pricking irons instead of 3.85mm?
No they would look very similar, it is all down to personal preference.
What kind of hammer do you use to hammer down the stitch lines?
It should be a large face hammer which is slightly domed outwards and the face should be polished so it will not mark the leather.
Normally leather bag thread size?
It depends on the size and styling of the bag. A good starting point is 4mm stitching spacing with 0.6mm thread.
