One way to keep these knots from happening is NEVER use an overhand knot for anything. Always use a figure-8 knot instead. Figure-8 knots are much easier to untie.
I never leave reviews. Watched first 2:30 minutes of this video and called BS.... Got a block of wood and a my rubber hammer, 2 minutes later a knot that was in my rope for years is out. Holy moly by brother from down under, Heck yeah... BRAVO and Thank you...
Not sure what I was looking up but came across this video . Got a knot in some braided line on my boat . Been there at least 5 years , never been able to even move it . Bugger me !!!!! Subscribe , done
My sincere thanks for sharing this! I thought I'd never get the knot out of a strap used to tow my 1955 Bedford S-Type lorry (loaded with a Cropmaster tractor) out of some soft ground with a David Brown 1594 tractor. Lots of weight, lots of pulling, significant knot. But less than five minutes of work with a rubber mallet had it free. Excellent advice, thank you! John (West Yorkshire, UK).
Thanks a bunch Matt! Had an overhand follow-through knot on a rock climbing sling which had been tied since the mid 90's and I thought it was never moving. A few choice taps with a cabinet-maker's mallet and it loosened right up
Works great! A 4x4 friend didn't undo the loop when strapping the rig up, didn't think I'd ever get it out.. especially since it's synthetic! Soaked it with water and a couple whacks on smooth concrete and good as new, thanks for this
Where the known weakness in a knot hits, is 1 1/3 diameters from where the flex stiffens: the edge creates a shear plane which reflects there. Although the break can be sudden, catastrophic, it starts with a shear which has started earlier, and can be present in the rope. Inspect it carefully after unknotting, particularly when torsioning it, and consider treating it as aged rope/strop thereafter, unsuitable for life-critical loads.
You sir are freaking AWESOME!!!! I've Tried a lot of things and have a lot of life experiences but have not heard of nor would I have thought of this trick in a million years!! Just got a tight knot out of my favorite ratchet strap that was tighter than a bulls butt in fly season and it only took 2 minutes! Thanks again for the video. Liked and subscribed!
Question. When hitting the strap with the hammer do I repeatedly say naughty? Or is it personal preference? Or should I ask the strap what it prefers to be called? This will be my first time trying this and I would like for it to be a special experience for both the strap and I.
Look my strap said it was gender neutral and wanted to be called a rope. That’s why I had to call it naughty. Usually strap behave themselves and you can show it great care and sympathy. Say things like hang in there sweetie we’ll get you out of here in a sec. Maybe a cuddle would be good to. 😂😂😂I do t think we should hang out it would be a laugh.
Thanks Matt, You can always tell if someone is a motor mechanic or not when something is tight and that’s when the first thing they go for is the trusty old hammer. I also refer to it as a “persuaders “, or a “knockrometer”. People always look at me as if to say “what the hell are you going to do with that??” I just smile and say “watch and learn.” Great tip thanks for sharing. Cheers, Jon
Thanks for this excellent video. I was hand-knotting a pearl necklace and accidentally dropped a knot in the wrong spot and it was pulled tight. I didn't want to damage the silk cord by picking at it so when I found your video and watched it I got my solution. Many thanks because it worked perfectly. The silk wasn't damaged at all.
I had a tree saver and recovery strap linked by some idiot (it’s not important I’m the idiot). This got them separated. You’ve earned a subscribe from me, sir.
You saved me a ton of work Dan the man!!! Excellent information! I had 4 bad knots and had no idea what to do to get them undone. I looked it up and you were the first one I found and it worked even better than you showed!! 😊
I've had many sailors tell me the square knot is a useless knot, and I say they have never seen to straps pulled tight. Two straps, looped together is a square knot.
WOW, I have a canoe, raft , kayak and boat rental business here in Alaska and I have thrown away many many straps in the last 33 years in this business. For some reason renters like to put a knot in your rachet straps. If I would have known... What a great job for the NEW guy every year.. thank you so very much Come see me in Alaska
My brother, I needed to use a strap that had a filthy knot in it. Mind you, it was double strap, double knot and had been underload. Now I was on the road and a strap had snapped so that's why I had to use this knotted up one with no choice. I googled how to undo it and found your RUclips video. You bloody legend it worked, had it undone within 30 seconds of hitting it with a malette 👍 The load safe. I'm safe and so are the public. Thanks again
Works because each impact force the knot into a smaller space, drawing more rope into the knot, you can see this, (and where the ends of the possibly damaged area are located,) by drawing lines on each side of the knot before hammering it. If you've got one, a deadblow hammer and a solid wood or smooth stone an anvil would provide better results. But a jack handle and a chunk of wood (or perhaps the skull of the numbskull who made the knot 😊?) will certainly work well.) Just avoid sand. You'll end up driving sand deeply into the fibers, where every movement it will be cutting them to pieces. But then, you should always keep gear as clean as possible to keep it healthy and extend it's useful life.
Great video! I had nylon slings that had a clevis and a ring cinched on tight. You can see the knots work loose from the rubber mallet and block of wood. Thanks for posting!
Good useful tip Matt, i noticed you don't go nowhere without your comfortable office chair, i wonder where you picked that up from ? Someones hard rubbish ?? Lol
I had a tow strap that I had a knot in. The knot has been in there for at least 15 years and used for towing countless times with the knot in it. With this technique that knot came out in about two minutes! This works...Thanks
ok... I have also seen people soak the strap in soapy water first, then strike the knot with the hard rubber hammer to help loosen it.... Lets go brandon
Works even better if the knot has had a good soak in water first. Keep dipping to keep it wet, the hydraulic force generated by the water being driven out takes the rope with it.
OMG THANKS SO MUCH! I had a massive knot after doing 3 sand recoveries today, I thought I had to buy a new snatch strap but thanks to you I saved at least $70 for a new snatch strap
Thanks Matt, great trick. I’ll have to bet my son to see who can undo tight knots. Could also be a great way to score some drinks while out with mates, fixing their stuff ups lol
Had a strap that was knotted tight then frozen. This absolutely did the trick! Thanks very much for sharing this useful bit of info. Much appreciated. Cheers from Canada.
I've had a seriously impossible knot in a pair of pajama pants for YEARS now and it didn't occur to me until today to look up a video on how to undo impossible knots. So glad I found this because I immediately took the pants outside and started hammering away. Glad to say the knot came undone. The fabric of the tie ended up ripping due to years of being stuck like that and washed and dried and whatnot, but I just tied the ends back on (a bit messy looking but whatever, they're pajamas!) and I'm able to tighten my pants again! Thank you for this video!!! -Eastern Sierra Nevada, California
Excellent video. I had a situation once pulling bushes using a tow strap. It knotted so tight around the trunk, I cut the wood and left it later to work it out. I ended up pulverizing the wood to get the knot loose.
Pulled a 300lb tree branch on my property with some poly rope and got some serious knots in it, said I bet there’s a a better way to get them out besides a screwdriver and damage to the rope, sure enough e few minutes with a rubber mallet on a peice of scrap limber and boom, untied! Thanks brother, what a tip!
Omg, thank you for this video! You just saved me from having to buy new hammock straps. I used a regular hammer and after a few seconds of gentle tapping, the seemingly impossible knot was out!
Amazing! I’ve had a strap with a knot in it for years (never did know how it happened) it has been used as a log choke, anchor point for snatch blocks and for winching out stumps with a 3.5 ton tirfor winch, I thought that knot was there forever (or until the strap broke) but a few whacks with a heavy rubber mallet on a stump and it began to undo, a few more whacks and I had a knot free strap!! Wow, thank you 👍🏻
The unfortunate I dislike with pounding with a hammer It fractures the fibers, and the result is A much weekend strap. Something you don't want. And for joining 2 straps, Always put a stick or board in the knot, as this will allow you to loosen the knot.
Yes I would think any strap would have to be used with caution after this. The concern with using a stick is we want minimal weight that can become a projectile if something fails.
Hey Matt. I have seen other presenters soak the strap or rope in water for about 1/2 hour before working it with the mallet. Have you had any experience with the water soak method yay or nay? Thanks for your videos Matt, from the Cowboy Country of the Western USA! 👍

Had two knots in a rachet strap. I have been cussing about them to myself for years. I though they would never come out. They are gone, thanks to this video. Thank You.
Mad Matt, thanks a lot! I had stabbed my thumb with an awl, put oil on the knot, all to no avail! In desperation, I googled "removing a knot" and got your video. This knot was a 1"wide nylon strap that had been wrenched down tight. I couldn't budge it. Watched your video, went and got my rubber mallet and in 15 seconds, I got that knot loose! Thanks again!!! Happy New Year!!!
Thanks for the info. Now I'm gonna take care of one of my straps that has had a knot for a long time. By the way, maybe slamming it into a tree instead of the ground would keep from damaging the strap. Just wondering.
Using the knot as if it were a weight on a sling and repeatedly flinging it against a hard but not abrasive surface can work on any size fiber rope. Natural and synthetic fiber ropes may be weakened by this process, synthetic by the fibers stretching, either by fibers breaking. None of these techniques will work reliably on wire rope.
Brilliant. I have 2 tow straps of different diameter tight from pulling a fellow out of deep snow filled drainage ditch in Wyoming. Not exactly an issue I imagine you have😅
This is great! I have rope that I strapped on to a tube to pull behind a boat. All the multiple hours of towing mixed with the water turned it into stone practically and I couldn't get the rope off. Tried hammering it after this video, had it off in 10 seconds. Who knew?!
I was taught that For LIFTING you should not use a rope or strap/strop that has had knots in it, as it may have damaged the fibres. I had nightmares a few years ago when I was expected to use a CHAIN with a knot in it .I could not undo the knot, so cut the section of chain out and put a new hook on the cut end. Not much good on 'brothers', but shortening grips should have been used anyway.
I guess that avoiding the use of knots would be the first thing to avoid. ..my question.. is does pounding the rope or straps with the dead blow hammer damage the fibers ?
Thanks so much for this video! I🎉 did not believe it would work but we hit the knots with a big stick a few times and now we got our hammock down instead of cutting the rope.
Had a big knot in a tow strap for years and years. Every once and awhile I'd try to get it out with no success. Less then 5 minutes using a rubber mallet and it's finally out.
I only just watched this a week or 2 ago and today someone else set up a snatch strap on my equaliser strap by threading the snatch strap back through itself. It beats me why he didn’t just thread the equaliser through the snatch strap, but if you don’t know you don’t know I guess. I immediately took the 2 straps and bashed the knot against a nearby log just three times and I was able to free it. Thanks for the tip, that I just passed on to 2 other guys.
Excellent video with the best part being the kookaburra hollering in the background! A real treat for an American birder :-) great tip on the untying too tho!
Nope. Never saw that before. I hate to think that I am excited for that to happen so I can fix it. Wait, I think I have some knots I have been ignoring in a few ratchet straps. Thanks.
I have a 1” kinetic rope that got a knot recovering a car from sand. I was already looking at replacements and found this video. The knot is out and the rope lives to save another day.
One way to keep these knots from happening is NEVER use an overhand knot for anything. Always use a figure-8 knot instead. Figure-8 knots are much easier to untie.

That is awesome. I've thrown away straps in the past from all the have knots and what knots and now i know what knot to do.
LOL. love ya work

Handy for relieving stress when your mrs has her knickers in a knot too 😂

Amazingly simple! I've had a knot in one strap for years that was able to get out in under a minute with this technique! Love it
You're so welcome!
EXCELLENT. You saved me from tossing 2 thick tow ropes. Cheers buddy!!!
Fantastic
If it's nylon, get it wet. Nylon fibers expand/stretch when wet and contract when they dry. Often a bit of water will be enough to get a knot loose.
OK
Holy shit, this worked.
I love the niche technical sections of the internet. Straightaway helpful. Many thanks man.
Glad to help.
Still in amazement of how well this works. Been using a 6ft tie down as a 3ft for two year because of a knot. Came right out. Thanks!
I know what you mean.
Another satified customer! Pound with rubber hammer, 5 minutes later, success!😅
It’s crazy it works ay

This technique seens a little better than my old, soak it in gasoline and use the magnifying glass trick. 🤔 ... safer too.
Yeah I think it might be. Lol
Dude worked like a charm!!! Thanks a bunch from Virginia USA!!!

Nice trick, thanks.

Done that before and it works but I always feel like I’m weaking the strap.
I imagine it does compromise the strap to a certain extent.

Works even better if the knot has had a good soak in water first. Keep dipping to keep it wet, the hydraulic force generated by the water being driven out takes the rope with it.
Try this and tell how it works out. Lay the knot down on the piece of wood and roll over it a few times with the truck tire. Might work
Thank you! I have been trying to un knot a towing strap for one year!
So good.
Thanks, just took me about 3 mins to untie an impossible KNOT 😂🙏👍
OMG THANKS SO MUCH! I had a massive knot after doing 3 sand recoveries today, I thought I had to buy a new snatch strap but thanks to you I saved at least $70 for a new snatch strap
Just use those for tow recoveries not kinetic recoveries now as they will be slightly weaker.
Knot a bad idea.
Another awesome vid Matt.
Keep up the good work 😁👏👏👍
Thanks! Will do! :)
Use a hatchet and that knot will quickly disappear.
WOW
Chief Ken Bauer, USAF (Ret)
Warm it up with a heat gun. Of course, be careful not to melt it.
I haven't tried this method but I have seen it done after testing breaking strength with different knots
Thanks Matt, great trick. I’ll have to bet my son to see who can undo tight knots. Could also be a great way to score some drinks while out with mates, fixing their stuff ups lol
now ya talking
It takes a while with the mallot on the braded line but it works. Thanks for the tip.
Would lubing it by soaking it in water help?
gotta say, not an outback bloke, but these techniques are gonna see a lot of use in my sewing and braiding projects. Great video
Awesome

Wow, thank you 👍🏻
Fantastic. Now just be careful with how you use it as the structure of the strap will be compromised.
The unfortunate I dislike with pounding with a hammer
It fractures the fibers, and the result is
A much weekend strap.
Something you don't want.
And for joining 2 straps,
Always put a stick or board in the knot, as this will allow you to loosen the knot.
Nay but I’ve heard that two. So far this has worked. From an Australian beach. 😁
This actually helped thanks!!!
By your accent i would assume you know about eucalyptus trees. The San Francisco Bay Area is chock full of them. We grew up like monkeys everyday swinging on ropes and building ladders and platforms. We had knots all the time we couldn't get out. Thanks for figuring it out.
We call them widow makers due to their tendency to randomly drop branches. A few people get killed each year.
Had two knots in a rachet strap. I have been cussing about them to myself for years. I though they would never come out. They are gone, thanks to this video. Thank You.
Oh wow! That awesome
Mad Matt, thanks a lot! I had stabbed my thumb with an awl, put oil on the knot, all to no avail! In desperation, I googled "removing a knot" and got your video. Happy New Year!!!
It crazy how well it works.
Amazing! I had all but given up on untangling a knot out of a strap. I cannot believe how easy it was to get the knots out using these techniques.
Ha ha. Fantastic.
Thanks for the info. Now I'm gonna take care of one of my straps that has had a knot for a long time. By the way, maybe slamming it into a tree instead of the ground would keep from damaging the strap. Just wondering.
It could work although I tried it without success
Using the knot as if it were a weight on a sling and repeatedly flinging it against a hard but not abrasive surface can work on any size fiber rope. Natural and synthetic fiber ropes may be weakened by this process, synthetic by the fibers stretching, either by fibers breaking. None of these techniques will work reliably on wire rope.
I’ve tried that but haven’t personally had any success with it. But I see it should work.
Brilliant. I have 2 tow straps of different diameter tight from pulling a fellow out of deep snow filled drainage ditch in Wyoming. Not exactly an issue I imagine you have😅
Lol no snow is not something I deal with very often.
This is great! I have rope that I strapped on to a tube to pull behind a boat. All the multiple hours of towing mixed with the water turned it into stone practically and I couldn't get the rope off. Tried hammering it after this video, had it off in 10 seconds. Who knew?!

Brilliant!! Thanks a bunch.
Yes i agree.
Great tip, however You probably should have added the bit to correctly join 2 straps for those who don't know. Good work.
That’s covered in other videos
You rock sir, that absolutely works as it should, I just took out a knot my brother put in pulling 1,500 to 2,000 lb hay big bales around.
How good is that ay
I guess that avoiding the use of knots would be the first thing to avoid. ..my question.. is does pounding the rope or straps with the dead blow hammer damage the fibers ?
Yeah that’s the smart move. It can damage the fibres so I’d only use the strap with caution.
Thanks so much for this video! I🎉 did not believe it would work but we hit the knots with a big stick a few times and now we got our hammock down instead of cutting the rope.
Fantastic!
That’s knot bad, I’ve knot tried that, and I’ve knot seen that before, great learning videos knot too shabby🔥🇦🇺🍻
Knot a bad reply knot that my opinion matters on knotty subjects like this knot issue where knotty knots don’t become deknotted easily. 😂😂
Had a big knot in a tow strap for years and years. Every once and awhile I'd try to get it out with no success. Less then 5 minutes using a rubber mallet and it's finally out.
Wow

Glad you enjoyed it!

Just go and make a knot. lol
“Naughty naughty?” Creepy
I threw away a tow rope a couple of years ago because I couldn't get the knots out. I wish I had seen this first. I'll know next time.
I think we all have at some point. Until I learned this.
