『六段の調（Rokudan no shirabe）』／日吉章吾 （作曲：八橋検校）

箏の代表曲《六段の調（ろくだんのしらべ）》は入門者がまず学ぶ曲の一つになっています。何度弾いても飽き足りない不思議な魅力に溢れ、「六段に始まり、六段に終わる」と云われるように芸術的にも高い価値を持った曲です。
　この曲は、八橋検校（やつはし けんぎょう／1614-1685年）が江戸時代初期に作曲したとされています。当時、組歌（くみうた）という箏伴奏の歌曲（かきょく）が主要な中、箏独奏の器楽曲（きがくきょく）は演奏形態として珍しいものでした。
※組歌：短い歌を複数組み合わせて一曲にまとめた弾き唄い楽曲のこと。
　段物とは曲全体がいくつかの段（部分）からなり、一般に格段の拍数が104拍（昔の数え方では52拍）に統一されています。最初はゆっくりと弾き出され、次第にテンポが速められ、曲尾はテンポをゆるめて終わります。曲頭には「換頭（かんどう）」という拍数の短い導入句が添えられています。
　本来独奏曲である《六段の調》は、独奏としての演奏は勿論のこと、三味線や尺八などとの合奏や替手を加えて箏の二重奏として演奏される場合もあります。
　また、《六段の調》と合奏が可能なように意図された楽曲や、他の近世邦楽の種目(ジャンル)において《六段の調》の旋律を取り入れた楽曲が作曲されるなど、後代の創作の源泉としての顔を持ち合わせているのも、当時から《六段の調》が多くの人に知られ、親しまれていた証左と言えます。

“Rokudan no shirabe,” a representative koto piece is one of the first pieces learned by a beginner student. It is full of mysterious charm such that one never tires of playing it; as it is said that “one begins with Rokudan and ends with Rokudan,” it is a piece with high artistic value.
This piece is said to have been composed by Kengyo Yatsuhashi (1614-1685) in the early Edo period. At the time, when songs accompanied by koto called kumiuta were in the mainstream, an instrumental piece for solo koto was a rare form of musical performance.
※kumiuta: a musical piece for voice and instrument combining multiple short songs into one piece.
A danmono consists of several dans (sections), and generally, the number of beats in each dan is unified at 104 beats (52 beats according to the old counting method). The piece begins at a slow tempo, speeds up gradually, and ends in a relaxed tempo. At the beginning of the piece, there is an introductory phrase called kando with a short number of beats.
“Rokudan no shirabe,” originally a solo instrumental piece, in addition to being played as a solo piece, is played at times together in concert with the shamisen or shakuhachi, or as a duo for 2 kotos with a counter-melody added.
Furthermore, the fact that this piece has the facet of being a source of subsequent creations resulting in pieces designed to enable playing in concert with “Rokudan no shirabe” and pieces incorporating melodies of “Rokudan no shirabe” in other early modern Japanese music genres being composed is evidence that “Rokudan no shirabe” was well known to and popular among many people from the time it was composed.
