You are the one working with your kids day in and out. Therefore, you know what they need. Grammar is grammar. It doesn’t matter what grade. If you think they are ready, need it, or just want to start introducing it, then you should. Just because someone else doesn’t, or because AO doesn’t have it scheduled, does not mean that you shouldn’t. If it gets to be too complicated or overwhelming then simply drop it, or let up on some of the reading. It’s your homeschool not any one else’s, so take what you like from AO and don’t worry about the rest! You are doing great, and they will have a wonderful education even if you can’t get to it all. Let’s face it, none of us can! There is simply too much, and so many great resources out there. It’s truly an overwhelming blessing, and a very first world problem to have. Love all your content!❤
I have jumped into Ambleside this year as well, and have used Brave writer for language arts! I also could not ditch Brave writer! 😅 So we are also using it for our copywork, and going over the grammar concepts. We also do the reading from Ambleside (but we’ll swap one one for our Brave writer book.) Then have them narrate. It has been great so far! I love love love the Charlotte Mason philosophy. ☺️
O awesome thanks for sharing and so glad you’ve found it to be doable and a good fit! Excited to keep it up because I really loved Brave Writer and miss it. My kids have been asking about book parties and with all the AO books I’m like whoa guys we can’t party that much 😂
For someone just starting their homeschooling journey would you suggest one over the other or trying both off the hop? I was leaning towards brave writer first and now not as sure.
Good question. If you go with AO, I’d just read the books and practice copywork and narration at age 7. I wouldn’t add anything else to it. Some considerations: If you’re following Charlotte Masons’s method more closely than you’ll want to hold off adding formal grammar till around age 10. If you’re ok doing brave writer grammar (the darts) sooner than age 10, (because honestly it’s light and fun) you could but I’d hold off till maybe 2nd grade/age 8 or 9 to get the most out of it. I find the two programs are complimentary except that we don’t have a lot of room in our day for another read aloud book (from the dart or arrow) with AO with 3 older kids. Hope that helps!
