Ingredients
1 Dako (barley rusk), toasted whole grain bread may be substituted
2 tomatoes
1/4 of a red onion, finely chopped
Extra virgin olive oil
Feta cheese (about 1/4 cup)
2 Kalamata olives, sliced and pitted
dried oregano
sea salt
capers
White Balsamic vinegar
Optional:
bell pepper slices
Instructions
If using toasted bread, do not wet it at all.
Begin by dipping the rusk in water. Do this quickly so that the rusk moistens but does not soak in the water. The flavor should come from the tomatoes and olive oil, not the water.
Place the moistened rusk on a plate.
Grate one of the tomatoes using a box grater and chop the other.
Drizzle some olive oil over the rusk.
Top with the grated tomato. Season with some sea salt.
Place the chopped tomato over the grated and season with more sea salt.
Crumble the feta cheese on top and garnish with the sliced olives.
Top with the onion and capers.
Drizzle generously with more olive oil, vinegar, and add the dried oregano on top.
Eat this as soon as possible.
Enjoy!!

Maryland tomatoes are great too.
Just back from the Greek Islands. Had this for the first time just yummy with the special cheese.
Just came back from Crete.. one of my favorites to eat!
We go often to Crete..my boyfriend has house in Rethymno! Love watching your videos!
So cool! I have family in Rethymno too :)
Thank you for sharing this delicious simple recipe. I bought the rusks you use and they are really so tasty when they soak up the juices from the tomatoes and olive oil. ❤❤
Hello my friend Dimitra what a delicious salad full of flavour healthy and delicious thank you for sharing. Great presentation also perfect for any time. Enjoy your week and enjoy your family and God bless.🙏😋💕🌏
Thank you very much. You as well!!
I lived in Greece for 13 years & ate this salad regularly.
This looks so fresh! Yum yum! Love the outfit, too!
This looks so good, definitely going to try. You look pretty, love your dress.
PERFECT I hot weather !! 🔥 ☀️
Thank you, Dimitra.
Sweetie Dimitroula mou! TY for this recipe! I will try to make this salad.
My pleasure 😊xoxo
Wow dimi I liked
Looks great...I'm wondering about the rusk and how soft it should be, and I'm wondering if refrigeration makes a difference?
First one here, yay! This is delicious. I had this when I went to Crete a few years ago, and it is soooo yummy. When I returned home, I was obsessed with making this for a while. As a Greek from Zakynthos, I love trying different ways of having Greek salad. Thank you for this video, I’ll be making this again ❤
Hi @angec590 I just read your comment and saw that you’re from Zákynthos. I love your island, and especially the local recipe for Skordostoumbi 🍅🍆🧄 I made it myself a couple of times and already passed the recipe to some friends of mine. The combination of baked aubergines with fresh tomato sauce that has both red wine vinegar and (Greek) honey is amazing. 😋😋😋
@@jozienvanakker532hi there! Yes, Zakynthos is beautiful. My mother was born there. I live in Montreal but got married there. Skorthostoumbi is delicious! I also love the eggs in tomato sauce you can at with crusty bread and other yummy recipes. Enjoy your day ! 😊
@@angec590 Oh Yes, fried eggs in tomato sauce with good olive oil is sooo delicious. I’ve learned that recipe from a Zakynthian! 🍅🍳🫒😋
This looks fab. It's obviously the Greek version of the very similar Palestinian tomato and dry bread salad called fatoush.
I love παξιμάδια! I know those Cretan ones as well and I am so hungry to try this! My mother was from Kythira- but born in Australia, and when I have visited there they eat these flour and olive oil paximathia every morning with coffee- I got so used to eating that..
Have you already made tiropita? Can you make it if you haven't? I just found your channel..
This looks so yummy. May ask a question. I am still uncertain as far as olive oils are concerned. Die you perchance know Illiada and Sapfo. I look for extra virgin oil and a date when it has been Made, filled up and the expiration date. Do you know these brands? What so you recommend paying attention top when buying the oil?
Bravo.
I found Mizithra at Murray cheese shop at Kroger Supermarket.
How lucky!!
Thank you for the recipe. So delicious. One of my favorite Crete foods! What do you call that rusk in Greek?
Dakos
@@MAhmed-zs2vp teşekkürler!
It’s pronounced “Poximadi” in Greek phonetically with English letters.
@@spamham1976 thank you!
@@sematalay2551 also if your interested in the Greek spelling it’s “παξιμάδι”
hi, I'm in Australia.
Do you ship your olive oil here? Ty.
Love your friendly, simple presentation and of course the recipe. I'm going to order the Rusks!
Hi! I wish we could ship to Australia. Right now we're shipping to the USA only. All the best!!
Yum. I’ll use Dutch tusks as they’re most available to me.
Ahhh, I had to look that up: Dutch rusks are called beschuit in Dutch. Now I know exactly what you mean 😃 Good idea 👍🏼
Love it! We just got back from Crete a few weeks ago. Did you make it over there this summer?
I didn't get to visit Crete this summer... Hopefully, next summer I will enjoy dakos and figs there!!
Can you use red wine instead of vinegar? Is that common in Greece?
Just fyi - I just saw myzithra cheese at my local Vons (Safeway, Albertsons) grocery store in Southern CA!
Tomatoes onCrete are the best.
Agreed!
I have always wondered how food was like before the Great Columbian Exchange.
Because tomatoes are from Central America, not really Greek. Same for chillies, potatoes, corn and on and on
Can you imagine Chinese or Indian food without chillies?
Can you use manouri?
I used to find them in titan in Astoria. by the way they moving in another area
Where is olive oil in this salad?🤔
❤❤
👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏🍃🥀🍃🥀🍃🥀💙💚🧡💛🤎
That is Sicilian , pure Sicilian.
Tomatoes arrived to Greece 200 years after than Sicily.
C’mon Dimitra!!!
LOL…
Sicilia was greek colony, don't forget that. A lot of south "Italians" want unification with Greece.
@@Komdwy I know that...(LOL!!)
Sicily was Greece, nut just a Colony...Arquimedes born in Siracuse...and Lasagna is a greek way to cook may be before the Romans...But Tomatoes...is like a religion for italians. Not in vane they called it "Pommo D'Oro" the golden fruit. And the rest of Europe dare to eat tomatoes centuries after italians.
Greetings.
Fred.
