After an 8-year hiatus Red Bull King of the Air has returned with a new format, new location and the mission to bring back the wow factor to kiteboarding.
Cape Town's famed Table Mountain was the perfect backdrop for the world's top 24 kiteboarders to face-off in the unique 'flag out' competition format. In the end it was Jesse Richman from the USA who managed to edge out Sam Light and Nick Jacobsen to emerge victorious.

I love what redbull does, but hate what it is
Learning this sport now, not as easy as it looks! Imagine balancing on a board, then having to control a kite with one hand and not looking at most of the time. It's a sport of subtlety and refined movements, yet when you get it, it's extreme and dangerous. Loving it, can't wait to fly!!!
Red Bull: It's caffeine and other crap in a can, and you can drink it!

erm...why, exactly, would they be judging on criteria weighted MASSIVELY towards creating the least skill dependent output and the most possible risk?
^you get height by trading in speed relative to the wind, you get high-*_er_* by capitalizing on changes in windspeed to widen the gap in the controlling variables. if the wind changes back while you're up in the air past the point where you would have traded out to normally? you no longer have the relative windspeed to generate lift and you just drop right out of the sky like the wind cut out and you're falling through dead air because in relation to you it just *did*

well it is easy to do a 360 at 2m with a little bit of wind, if you did things that people like aaron hadlow, ruben lenten and Youri zoon you would not say its an easy sport.

Is it really so hard to make all these weird body turns in the air, suspended from a kite? Might just as well be doing it suspended from a garage ceiling. No one would applaud you then, would they? And as to this "Big Air" thing, given enough wind that kite will even get a dementing baboon airborne.
