I 100% agree with everything you said. Lostprophets' discography is incredible, and despite all the horrible things that happened I've never stopped listening to their music. How they managed to make five albums with virtually no bad or skippable song baffles me, and I've always unironically said their tracks should be studied in songwriting classes: they're the catchiest thing imaginable and a part of me always tried to keep them in mind while writing for my band. I've seen a lot of people burn their CDs and act like Lostprophets never existed, but I can't: perhaps I'm wrong, but I think you should always separate art from the artist. Plus, as you said, there were five other people in the band (I'm glad to see Lee Gaze stumbled upon this video as well), and if Watkins' actions should be despised, the other poor guys' art should be celebrated.
    Cheers from Italy,
    Armando

I know this video is a year old now, but I still catch myself coming back to the band multiple times. The band was fantastic, and though Ian is a disgusting excuse for a human, he was skilled at singing and had the ability to keep people hooked with very catchy hooks and lines. Sad we will never get another band like them.

Let me put it like this, I have actually measured his vocal range in depth and let’s just say he was every bit as talented as he was despicable. This is best exemplified by his vocal feats, as a baritone/baritenor no less, the highlights including:
      1. Repeatedly belting out Bb4, B4, and Db5 in the chorus of Save Yourself, and still being able to speak and pronounce fast words clearly in such high registers. Similar use of high registers exists in countless other songs, with probably the best example being the chorus of If You Don’t Stand For Something, You’ll Fall For Anything (staying in the G#4-D5 range for over 30 seconds, and then ending on an upward run from B4 to E5 (!!!!!!!!) in mixed voice).
      2. Belted and sustained B4-A#4-F#4 runs in the chorus of AC Ricochet, and (possibly, but still unconfirmed) sustained D5-A4 and D5-C#5 belts in the chorus of Every Song (4AM Forever B-side).
      3. Fast, heavily syncopated runs on the Eb5 note in both Next Stop, Atro City and DSTRYR/DSTRYR, and possibly D#5/E5 and (peaked) F#5 in the VERSES of Weapon. Note that these are in MIXED voice and NOT falsetto. A slightly weaker (and much less raspy) version exists in the bridge of Dead to Me, which is in the C5-D5 range (this is after very long SUSTAINED A4 belts in the chorus).
      4. Upward runs to mixed voice sustained Eb5 in 4AM Forever (end of the penultimate chorus), and It’s Not the End of the World, But I Can See It From Here (in the bridge-the SECOND of a pair of throat-shreddingly high screams). The end of the chorus of If You Don’t Stand For Something, You’ll Fall For Anything is even more impressive with upward runs from B4 to E5 (!!!!!!!!!!) in mixed voice.
      5. Speaking of It’s Not the End of the World, But I Can See It From Here, there is one acoustic version entirely in falsetto, which is not only really impressive, but the bridge vocal run (due to being in falsetto) is raised multiple semitones, and in that version goes all the way to G#5!!!!! Heaven for the Weather, Hell for the Company also has impressive upward falsetto runs that (I think) go up to F5/F#5. Also, in both Sway and the aforementioned acoustic version of It’s Not The End of the World, But I Can See It From Here, there is also a lot of lower falsetto singing, which requires quite a lot of skill.
      6. Moving away from high notes, the guy’s lower register was also quite impressive, able to reach down to (I think) D2-E2. This is especially noticeable on the song Directions. The use of vocal fry in the first verse of If It Wasn’t for Hate, We Would be Dead (as well as the cover of Sweet Dreams my LA Ex) is also really impressive…
Such a waste of talent, Watkins had the adulation of most of the UK’s teenage girls, and unlike say, Justin Bieber or One Direction or Westlife had the actual TALENT to back it up, but he threw it all away on truly sick and evil things (and was probably having a catastrophic mental collapse and dissociating from reality). I guess this is Exhibit A of my theory that the most gifted among us are at least a little bit psychotic as well, given that Watkins was likely already mentally a bit unstable even before becoming addicted to drugs, and the drugs and fame were essentially the straw that broke the camel’s back, but dammit, I wish that I could live in a timeline where he stayed off the drugs, recognized his problems, and got help BEFORE hurting others…at least Suno AI might allow us to pretend (Lostprophets are probably the only band I would consider ethical to make “new songs of” with AI-albeit for personal enjoyment and not with the intent of making money)…

    • @calvinstraveldreams
      @calvinstraveldreams 20 дней назад

That said, when actually listening to Lostprophets, I can’t help but feel like a lot of their songs are missing that one thing to make them truly special, even if a truly great song (or even just the bones of one) already exists. Most of their songs scream for guitar solos, piano flourishes in the final chorus, etc…If I were to download their songs after paying with my own money, I would add these flourishes myself and mix them into the songs (for the versions that I listen to, and no, I would not attempt to sell those or anything)-this is why I think paying for CDs or songs on iTunes is still SOMETIMES worthwhile, as it is something I want to do with a lot of songs in my iTunes.

I remember when I heard Wake up (Make a Move) for the very first time. I remember when I ran to the record store to see if they already had the next album. Liberation, Betrayed and Weapons. We are approaching to ten years of Lostprophets' demise and still hurts. I go back and listen to those records sometimes, records that were part of my teenage years and adulthood. I remember when the news broke (I am from Colombia, but a friend of mine who lives in the UK told me via Live Messenger) and I couldn't believe it, and I still can't believe this man who had it all, not just money, he was a handsome man, that hid such a dark part of himself.

Hard not to feel bad for the other guys in the band Obviously not as bad as I feel for Watkin's victims, but the rest of them lost more than just a gig. They're entire discography, decades of work is blacklisted. No one is going to license that music any time soon.
Normally, popular bands with a healthy discography can rely on future income through legacy alone. Not former LP members though.

They were such good memories. I still feel sad sometimes that I will never get to see them again (but I know that's nothing compared to what the victims have been through including the rest of the band). At the end of the day the other members of Lostprophets all had (and I am sure still have) so much talent and they don't deserve to be forgotten or put down just because of one person. Their music was phenomenal and it will always be a part of my life :).

Recently I reviewed their discography. I’m someone that’s never heard of them till recently. To me it seemed like they were really with whatever was popular at the time. Nu-Metal on their first album, Hoobistank on the 2nd, then emo on the third.
They went from “we’ll kick your ass” rocker dudes to “please don’t kick our ass” emo aesthetic. As an American it makes sense why they didn’t make it here. The sounds they experimented with were beaten to death in the states.
We had so many pop punk and Nu Metal bands that Brits never heard of. You couldn’t really distinguish LostProphets from any of those bands. They did get bad reviews here.
With the negative out the way. LostProphets had some good guitar riffs. There were a handful of songs I liked. The lyricism was pretty creative sometimes. Melodies weren’t the best until Liberation Transmission.

THANK YOU for saying this! One of my favourite ever bands too, and equally I find it awkward to discuss them with anyone. "What he did was just too wrong," one of my friends said. "People aren't comfortable." So frustrating. I rediscovered lostprophets last summer (convenient pun) during lockdown and have listened to them almost daily since. I keep finding new meanings in the lyrics and discovering new love for tracks I'd previously skipped or just not really listened to. Still Laughing is one - the last section where the awesome tapping riff starts, and Ian is singing something that I hope he hasn't forgotten: "I'm still waiting; I still breathe; That's a sign that I'm still me; I'm still breathing; I can see; So I must be alive for real"

They were a great band. It's just such a sad situation. They are part of that great early 2000s nu metal scene. I was only a kid when they were popular. It isn't fair that we aren't allowed to listen to them sort of like people think forgetting them will somehow erase what Ian did. Looking at them musically they still hold up and we should be allowed to separate the art from the artist.

Good job man! It's heartbreaking that the music has been tarnished by everything around Ian. It is a super hard topic for most and I can completely understand that. But I do, even more now reading these comments and watching this video feel a sense of relief. It seems I'm far from alone in having a genuine tie and connection to these tracks and music from my youth, especially for me "Last Summer" but yet I'm torn, because obviously none of us can get over what Ian did, and why should we, what he did is wrong on all levels. Unfortunately separating the music from the artist is near impossible. Anyway, what I can take away from this, is a surprisingly comforting feeling. To know that I'm far from alone in my love for these amazing albums, especially their second album. Thanks for the video, and acknowledging the elephant in the room. 👍🏾😊

Having seen all the comments, I totally agree... but I have to mention that when we are young, exciting new music is discovered every minute/hour/day/week, however not so often as we grow up. I was 35'ish when I first heard the LoPh's and it was like becoming a teenager again! Finding something I could enthuse about so much and and rant at all my mates about at all available opportunities. What an incredible experience. Seeing them live 3 or 4 times I have "tour T shirts" that I can no longer wear, however they are still somewhere in my wardrobe (!) Being a musician/performer/writer, I recognise that they made some amazing stuff. I had never seen the subtitle to Never Gonna Catch Tomorrow but hearing the track, I immediately picked up on the line "good shoes won't save you this time" and was spell bound , as with most of Watkins' lyrics. Complimented by the awesome musicianship of course. I hope the rest of all the guys are ok and they are getting their due royalties. This critique and presentation is perfect... Very well done.

Great video! Together with Linkin Park, these guys were my fav band when growing up. The fake sound of progress and start something are fucking amazing imo. Liberation Transmition was cool but to me had lost a bit of the energy, even though I like most songs and still very much enjoy most of the album. I have a very broad taste in music and as I grew older I went through different phases and shifted to old school hip hop. This resulted in me actually missing the last two albums and only discovering them much later. Gave them a listen but it honestly didn’t convince me so I just stuck to the “old” albums. Then I heard about Watkins crimes...Quite heartbreaking for everyone involved (The victims, the fans, the other band members). It really tarnished everything. I’ve been listening to the old albums again, especially the first two and it’s weird because obviously I can’t forget what he did, but the music is still great. I do believe in being able to separate art from artist (while still acknowledging that a certain connection is always going to be present and being aware of who the artist is, to not be ignorant of reality and the connections). I also think it is important to talk about this stuff without immediately losing ones shit about it. It is possible to enjoy great albums that shaped my teen years while still being aware and reflective of the terrible things that they are connected to. It’s important to talk about this shit, not just brush it under the rug. Thanks for being honest and real about your opinions of the band.

A true story to lighten the mood, I used to live in Cardiff and a few months before Watkins got arrested I was in a nightclub called Bogiez (which was the local rock club). Also in there was a guy called Magzy who played guitar for a few of the local hardcore bands. Watkins walks in and then out of no where a slightly inebriated Magzy lunges for and beats down Watkins. A few years later we joked/theorized that Magzy had a premonition of what Ian had done so got his shots in early. Apparently No Devotion are working on a new record I wish them the best.

Im so glad i found this video. Ive only found out about this band after the incident of Ian Watkins sadly, but i just fell in love with the songs, and i couldn't get enough of it. If Ian Watkins didn't do what he did, this would easily be my favorite band, because ive never seen such a band that sounds similar to it as of late (this band is just unique). I do feel a guilty pleasure listening to it, but i guess the only one we have to blame is Ian, for putting an end to his carreer and all of the other members. The fact that this band has all of the genres i love, going from nu-metal to an emo-style rock, just baffles me, and i still can't believe that Ian Watkins just wasted a gem of a band for his own narcissistic and sick desires.

Your silly view of the painter consists only of what you’ve been taught to believe/think about him, as you have clearly never done any unbiased research into what actually happened back then and what he was really like. Here's my perspective on Lostprophets:
When I was a kid, I was playing Need For Speed: Underground and found this song in the game's soundtrack: "To Hell We Ride" from Start Something. That's how I first heard about the band.
In Savox's video on 7 of the most evil musicians, Savox played a clip of "Rooftops". To be honest, I was afraid of checking out a couple of LP's songs on RUclips because it would probably make me look like a bad person because I already heard about Ian's conviction. I actually wanted to check them out because I was curious, so I needed to hear some opinions on this situation. I found a someone asking a question on Quora if it's morally wrong to listen to LP with the knowledge of Ian's conviction. Two people answered and both of whom said no. I was also like, "Screw it. I'm only gonna live once."
I actually like the two songs "To Hell We Ride" and "Rooftops", and they're only two songs I have downloaded on my phone.

Controversial opinion incoming surrounding Lostprophets, though just the music this time around-I actually find Liberation Transmission to be their best album, even though it is also their poppiest. For one it (and Weapons) seems to have the best production, however unlike Weapons the rhythms and chord progressions still have some uniqueness, the songs are in a VERY wide range of key signatures (I believe that, including B-sides, the band used 10 of the 12 possible keys on that album, assuming that we count the relative major and minor versions of a given key as the same key), the choruses are on average a lot catchier than those on Weapons (or FSOP/Start Something/The Betrayed), and (yeah I know about the elephant in the room surrounding Ian) Ian’s voice sounds A LOT nicer (and shows FAR more vocal range) on Liberation Transmission compared to any of the band’s other albums except The Betrayed (and the 2007 Garage Sessions songs, where his voice was at its ABSOLUTE peak), especially on the B-sides (this is after he had fully recovered from a throat injury in the late 90s and his voice had truly matured, and BEFORE he started doing drugs (and likely the other bad things he is now infamous for)). The Betrayed is mostly solid as are the 2007 Garage Sessions songs, however the softer songs aren’t as engaging, largely because of the weaker melodies and reduced amount of harmonizations (I am an absolute SUCKER for good high harmonies in the backgrounds of songs, and Liberation Transmission is full of those).

I know this video was a deliberate attempt to remove Art from the Artist, and perhaps it’s simply a conversation people don’t want to have in this case, but bare with me a second. It’s difficult to pin point when, however I think with hinesight, a line between the quality of the art and the downfall of the artist can be drawn. Early videos of LP live performances you see an energetic and lively frontman, By the end in 2012 he’s a pasty mess, who can barely sing somedays & is virtually carried by the rest of the band on any given show. Singing, Lyrics, album artwork theme - All of IW usual contributions begins to either decline or often be ‘phoned-in’ imo as time went on - & the rest of the band were picking up the slack. I think even if IW wasn’t the monster we now know him to be, Lostprophets were probably done as a band after Weapons. Anyway rant over just my 2c, Thanks for the video, As an old LP fan all these years later the sense of anger and betrayal will never go away, but the love for Start Something hasn’t either, & it’s hard to explain how that could possibly be, but you did as well as anyone could.
