- Silhouetted palm trees dotted a creeping sunrise to the east, and a waning moon hung in the black sky above the Pacific Ocean at 5 a.m. Friday morning as 22 current and former Reconnaissance Marines stood on the San Onofre Beach shoreline aboard Camp Pendleton, California, waiting to start a grueling day.
“Three! Two! One!” a Marine yelled, kicking off the 2021 Recon Challenge.

It is unbelievably impressive that the top pair had a combined age of 84. Absolute beasts
Those guys look as tough as leather.
It is all mental- some of these fat ass you tubers shooting paper targets need to be getting some cardio in. Survival depends on your fitness level at times as well. Age is def a just number
That old man strength
What’s even more impressive is that one of them was 83 and the other was a 1 year old
@@BostonsF1nest 😭😭😭‼️‼️‼️
Yup! It’s been a long time. ‘73..75….This brings back great as well as bad memories. !
Semper Fi, my fellow warriors proud to be one of the fewer one of the Prouder a Recon Marine.
Nice
Brings back solid memories. I served with 3rd and 2nd Recon BN 2000-2003. Good stuff and a solid outfit!
imagine the quality of sleep you get after all this? like head, pillow see you next week haha.
Sleeping after that amount of training probably wouldn’t be too comfortable these guys went through a lot, but idk their bodies’ are probably extremely conditioned for it so maybe.
@@slinkychungus2044With the amount of training they do ANY amount of sleep anywhere is good sleep to the point where everything looks like a pillow....rock big enough to lay head on? pillow.....rucksack? pillow....large mound of dirt? pillow.
they probably woke up at 0430 looking forward to PT. Meat eaters.
@@aa-ig3ng I can picture Gunny Highway coming out and saying "Well, well, well, well. I'm here to tell you that life as you knew it has ended. You all may as well go into town tonight. You may as well laugh and make fools out of yourselves. Rub your pathetic little peckers against your honeys or stick it in a knothole in the fence but whatever it is, get rid of it. Because at 0600 tomorrow your ass is mine."...lol
i do agree your sleep ain't the best after this nothing compared to several days on the field in the cold for field ex....
You're back and you discover the civilization !!!!
My dad was a force recon team leader over in Fallujah, got a bronze star over there too.
Awesome,thank him for his service.👍
Yeehaw
As a Seabee of 23 years active duty. I would often find myself either supporting, or watching all the special ops in action, to include the French Foreign Legion. Recon Marines are the most humble and professional group I had the privilege of being around. Semper FI Marines👍💯💥
Did you serve with Charlie's Angels? they are tier 9.
@@Tropikalk naw, they were to hard core for me.
I’m sure you did

Outstanding! Congratulations Major Jordan and Master Guns Paskvan!
I was in 2nd Recon Battalion at Lejeune in '78 and '79 (the barracks were right by the beach). Our go to workout was as follows: 1. Swim out past the breakers and then back in with fins and mask only. 2.) From waters edge sprint to the top of the dunes and then walk back. 3. 80 pushups at waters edge, repeat 1. and 2. 4.100 mountain climbers with each leg then repeat 1. and 2. 5. 100 bends and thrusts then repeat 1. and 2. 5. 50 burpees, repeat 1. and 2. That completed 1 cycle. Our standard was 5 cycles but when we were feeling fully rested and/or cocky we would sometimes do 7 or more cycles. It was a real ball buster but got you in the best shape of your life and quick. The only rules were your chest had to touch the ground or the water when doing pushups (including burpee pushups) and you had to jump and clap your hands to complete every burpee repetition. The only rest you got was walking back from the sand dune sprints and resting while swimming, and we were allowed to body surf back in and get some rest time in the water if you were starting to black out...it really made your heart rate max out. Glad to see The Corps is still pushing their Recon Marines. Semper Fi
Loved those run down barracks. 2nd Recon 85-89. Alpha and Bravo Companies.
Old guys teachin' the young ones what's what. That's awesome.
An old guy taught me that hammer pairs kills everyone. Well.... we know thats not true. Many old recondos were shit bags but wouldnt or wont retire as they keep adding to that pension. Or think warfare doesnt change and push to train people in the ways they shouldve fought during their deployments 8-12 years ago. But hey, who can know anything about the dynamic world.
I thought Boot Camp was going to kill me lol Semper Fi ! (96-02)
Thanks for posting . I was an 0311 for 6 years . Really respected Recon
those are two VERY dangerous men
Hell yeah. The old wolves still have teeth! Much respect gentlemen!
Look at the smiles on their faces as they marched, they were proud to be there
Bunch of badasses! Awesome shit
Packy is still a monster stud. Was that Major Capers at the end? Legend!
This is crazy to watch this having been here
I hope one day you guys will cover the Raider competition too.
Ouch....that's a lot of miles I thought Jesus paid for our sins....🙏🇺🇲👍
Love it

I would love to see force recons do best ranger course and rangers (regimental or not) do the recon challenge and get their feedback of how the other's were.

soo...4th Force here 91'-94'...is it ok that this made me a little sick... definitely not in fighting trim anymore. Semper Fi Brothers!
Could not be arsed
Gunny Highway would approve!
Semper fi it breaks my heart that so many have gave the ultimate sacrifice. Have not even started their branch of their family tree. But as time moves on a certain quality of life takes advantage of the freedom that they fought for and basically trash them.
Geezer Power!
I'm bout to be in mart in 10 days
god bless you all !!!!
Every Master Gunnery Sergeant I've met I believe could win this competition. Every one has been the best at everything military related for 15+ years. Not an easy rank to obtain. Major is no joke either. Semper Fidelis
Wait.. people die in training?
Marines and Corpsmen die all too often in training - unfortunately. All the damn time. The news articles of military training accidents never register to most people who scan news headlines or read a news outlet website, but if you served, they always seem to catch your eye. You end up looking to see if it involved anyone you knew or a former unit.
When I was active duty I was an 0321 with 2nd Recon Bn. A Co. The very first Battalion commander that was there during my time was Lt. Col Knight. Dude was a freakin beast, had to have been in his late 50s early 60s and he was at the front of the pack on every run, every fin, every event. He ran 4.5 to 5 minute miles like it was nothing. Always 300 PFT scores....pretty much put everyone there to shame. I'd say with confidence that 90% of the older higher ranking enlisted & officer Recon Marines were pretty much like that, unless they had prior injuries. His replacement was Col. Bright and that dude was almost the same in just about every category.
Was also at Onslow with A" and C" COMPANYS.
@@johniverson2161 What years?
@@brenmfffusmc7803 Greeting. Missed your question. Traveling...limited cell towers.. Was at 2nd from early 77 till rotated out in late 79. Short stint in A co....then moved to C company in order to get an Ambib Recon School temp duty and an African/South American float. As I recall my plt. NCO was Sgt. Forney and Plt. Commander was Ist Lt. Hernandez. Do you recall all the prehistoric sharks teeth on the southeast section of beach. Onslow best duty station in the corps. Sempler FI

Incredible to watch, wow. So,i have a question.Did i hear correctly at 1:24.He says it's to honor those who have fallen in combat AND training.I didn't know they lost some in training.Again,im new to this, thanks.

It's so crazy to see there is a female Recon Marine!
First Female Recon Marines
Wait what? Where are there female Recon Marines in this video?
@` ́ ` ́ there is one female recon marine. She's a good soldier, made it through recon selection, SERE, and Halo
Members from a different branch able to participate? If so, how?
More than likely, but you would probably have to prove that you had the required pool & open water swimming skills. I would email the Recon Training Company at School of Infantry-West or the Recon Association.
@@mrs8171 thanks for the heads-up. I do swim regularly in a pool and open waters.
How does this compare to the best ranger competition
No competition. Best ranger is 60 miles within 60 hours and no sleep.
No comparison at all. This event is rucking 25+ miles of Camp Pendleton's steep terrain. Places with names like Mount Motherfucker and The Reaper. Tack on multiple water evolutions including a 1000m fin in the Pacific. Time needed to crush this event...9 hours 27 minutes. They need 60 hours to complete 60 miles of Darby Cream and flat terrain of south Georgia? Sounds like a 24 hour evo for us.
Hey I’m a 42 year old Marine!! I still have a chance!!!
Fucking A.
WOW. She looks like Sophie Turner aka Sansa Stark. wtf @2:00
long distance pro kayakers peak beginning fifthies and crush competition. first CIA field responders in Afghanistan were into their fourties, both of which suggests, it's helpfull to integrate across age a bit more? Donno, just a naive impression, well, whatever, I'm off
What about the part where you’re supposed to have your hands tied behind your back and Eskimo kiss at the bottom of the pool while interlocking your toes with your partner?
Sounds about like a spur run for the Army Scout's
I love you man but I'm Man don't think about is 😂😂😂😂😏
Oh, but don't worry, Woke Bishop Garrison will get the right people involved here!
Nice to see them copying the Best Ranger Competition.
Okay, where are the women Marines doing this? Don't they want equality? As Bite-me would say, "C'mon man!".
I was in Charlie Company, 2nd Recon Battalion, third plattoon from 1982 to 1984. Onslow Beach in the quanset huts like the guy above said when he was there in the late 70s. His discription convinced me he was actually there because I trained hard core and bled over that sand. I was a two year infantry grunt (0311), (Pendelton and Okinawa), and then a two year Marine 2nd Marine Recon (Camp LeJuene). The training was really tough for Marine Recon in the 1980s because we had to insert behind the enemy undetected 10-20 miles behind them, in the middle of the night and sneak up and spy on them (green ops) and report our findings through cripto radio gear. in the 80s they ran the shit out of us, at least 10 miles a day. We were a bad ass bunch of groups between Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie Companies. I did lose 17 of my best friends in that suicide bombing in that 1983 Marine Barracks bombing in Beirut Lebanon. I took my best friend in a casket from Dover Air Force Base to Northern Maine to his parents. I wore dress blues. That's among the hardest things I've ever done.
